Matt Roth a Must

LB-- the odd reaction to my comments is somewhat paradoxic.

If a high school kid chooses a BCS school then it is often because it will get him the highest exposure and chance at the NBA, right?

Then when I document that Bradley has also provided excellent chances for kids to get to the NBA, well ahead of the track record of any other MVC school - especially ISU - then people are absolutely aghast that I would even mention the NBA issue.

Well, which is it?
Does a kid pick a school for his chances of playing basketball in the future, or doesn't he?
You can't have it both ways.
BU is a great academic environment, and even Patrick O'Bryant and his parents said so and that it influenced their choice of coming to BU, but I firmly believe had POB chosen Minnesota or and other BCS school, he'd still be a junior on the bench waiting for a chance to play instead of earning a couple $ million per year.

One guy over on the PJS board even discounted the whole argument of getting to the NBA because he believed POB still wasn't NBA material.
I suspect the banks still cash the paychecks, though. :roll:
 
I want Matt just as much as everyone else does but his all around game needs some work he is a great shooter don't get me wrong.I think everyone is making a big deal out of him because he is a local kid.We are after better guards than him also.

Fruendt is a better guard, and if I had to choose between the 2 I would take Fruendt in a second. He's my #1 for that scholarship.

The answer to your first question is NO. Most kids do not pick a BCS in order to get more exposure so they can play in the NBA. Do you know the % of college players even amoung the top schools make the NBA? The over whelming majority of kids are well aware they will not be playing in the NBA and pick a school based on a variety of other factors. Including academics, proximity to home, comfort with the school size, comfort witht the coach, system, players. Potential playing time, playing against the highest level of compitition and of course exposure. I would think the exposure aspect has more to do with being on tv so friends and family can see you rather then NBA scouts. In todays world, you dont need to be on tv to get to the NBA. I would guess Les would hardly mention the NBA when recruiting Matt Roth.


Another thing you are wrong about is POB, if he went to Minn or any other big ten school he would have been starting and would have starting last year. You think no other coach in the country would have recognized his talent?

maybe, maybe not.
Even in conversations I have had with a certain dI head coach, he indicates the same thing I see when dealing even with high school kids and even junior high kids,
that each and every one of them still think they have a shot at playing in the pros.
Sure it's maybe more of a dream, but they all have that dream, and even the ones who are realistic still might want to play in Europe or somewhere, so my point is still valid.

If you are a McD AA then choose a BCS school
If you are a marginal player to ever make the NBA then you might just be better off playing at a mid-major. It sure worked for Anthony Parker, Patrick O'Bryant, even Ben Wallace.
That's all I am saying, in response to those who say that if a kid has designs on playing in the NBA he should always choose a BCS over a mid-major.

I think it's easier to work on/teach other aspects of the game than it is to teach/work on shooting.
 
If POB goes to Minnesota, no matter if he was starting or not, they do not make the sweet 16 and he doesn't get all that National recognition he got last year. Like it has been said on here many times. We lose to Creighton in the first round of the MVC tournament POB is still a junior on the Hilltop this year. End of story.
 
Matt Roth had a slight off game Saturday as Washington High School travelled to Champaign to play Normal Community in the "Shootout at the Hall".

Matt had 21 points and was 3-7 from 3 point range.
Washington won 46-41.

The game was in the Assembly Hall on the campus of University of Illinois, and Bruce Weber was in attendance watching Matt Roth.
Maybe I should have titled this thread "Local Bruce Weber Sighting..."
