George Washington University has decided to "retire" the name "The Colonials", saying in a press release that "it can no longer serve its purpose as a name that unifies,” and that “A moniker must unify our community, draw people together and serve as a source of pride,” the school announced Wednesday. They will continue using the nickname until a new name is decided on, which is not likely to happen until the 2023-24 academic year. GEU has used the Colonials name since 1926.

Nickname update....
George Washington University announced the new name for their sports teams. They will be known as the "Revolutionaries".
They had announced a year ago they planned to drop the nickname "Colonials", which they have used since 1926, because it was no longer "unifying".

The University received about 8,000 suggestions for a new name, and cut that down to a list of 4 finalists-
The Revolutionaries
The Blue Fog
The Ambassadors
The Sentinels

A University community vote was held, and the Revolutionaries was the top choice.

They currently plan on keeping their mascot, George-

Back on the original post, Chief Illiniwek was the only thing I liked about the U of I.

I wonder if the native American advocate group wanting them to drop Illini will also push for the State of Illinois to change its name.
