Malevy Leons signs new NBA deal

yoda

Well-known member
Malevy & his agent have negotiated a new deal - a Two-way contract with the Golden State Warriors.
That means he could play for the NBA Warriors or could spend time on the roster of their G-League
Santa Cruz Warriors. Time will tell but it might be a great deal for Malevy who was stuck behind a whole
OKC roster full of young stars - but now may have more opportunity to play in the NBA.

The Oklahoma City Thunder liked Malevy, but they already had 3 players on the NBA Two-way contract, which is the maximum allowed. So they had him signed him to a standard G-League contract this year. The risk with that is that it allows any NBA team to "steal" them by signing them to an NBA contract, a Two-way Contract or an Exhibit 10 Contract. Golden State also had 3 players on Two-Way Contracts, but waived one of them today (Alex Toohey, who is out for the season with knee surgery). That allowed Golden State to sign Malevy, who they have also liked for a long time. They were interested in signing Malevy last year as a free agent, but he chose to sign with Oklahoma City..

There are stipulations for the Two-Way Contract-
The player can split their time between the G-League team and the NBA team, and the salary is half the NBA rookie minimum salary. The Two way contract can be continued for as long as 2 years, but has a maximum of 50 games games per year with the NBA team (Golden State has 57 games remaining this season). And the player does not have playoff eligibility, unless under emergency situation.
The good news for Malevy is a big boost in salary. A standard G-League contract pays around $45,000-$50,000 per year. Some G-League players can negotiate a highler salary. The Two Way salary for 2025-26 pro-rated for the rest of the season will be around $500,000.

Malevy is now listed on the NBA team's 18-man active roster- https://www.nba.com/warriors/roster
The Golden State press release (see below) states that he will wear #33 for the team, though the roster page currently shows him with his number from the OKC Blue, #17. But, one of Golden State's nine retired numbers is #17 (for Chris Mullin), so Malevy had to change numbers to #33.
Only 15 players can dress for any NBA game. Golden State's next game is Friday, Dec. 12. They have not yet announced whether he will stay with the NBA team, or go to their G-League team, the Santa Cruz Warriors. Currently, the Santa Cruz Warriors are in last place in the G-League West Division, with a 1-11 record, the worst record in the entire G-League.
Golden State's press release-

Malevy with another great game for his Warriors G-League team
Team high 18 pts, 6 Reb, 3asst

Malevy had another great game last night. He's been with the Santa Cruz Warriors for a month and a half, and
in that span they have won 8 of 10...
Last night Santa Cruz beat Sioux Falls Skyforce 110-103, Malevy getting 21 pts on 9-13, 8 reb, 2 asst and a steal.
Unfortunately, there's no way to know his stats since the G-League stat site is ridiculously messed up with clearly inaccurate numbers.

Malevy did apparently appear briefly in 1 or 2 Golden State Warriors games for a couple minutes of playing time

The NBA site shows one game played-

ESPN and other stat sites show 2 games-

Malevy gets his first double-double with the Santa Cruz Warriors (G-League)
15 pts, 11 reb, 2 asst, 1 steal, 1 block

They play again later tonight

Instead of playing for the Santa Cruz G-League affiliate, Malevy got called up and played Monday night
for the NBA Golden State Warriors against the Timberwolves.

he had a good game, altho the Warriors lost 108-83
He played 9 minutes, had 6 pts, 5 reb, 1 asst, 1 steal
He even got an NBA Highlight - LINK
The Warriors are dealing with a lot of injuries (missing LJ Cryer, Gary Payton II, Steph Curry & Draymond Green)
.... so Malevy may have a chance for more PT

Curry & Draymond Green are back for the Warriors and Malevy is sent back to the Santa Cruz Warriors,
He's playing for them right now- against the Iowa Wolves.

edit
the game is final and Malevy again gets a double-double
Santa Cruz Warriors win 108-101 against a team with two former MVC players (Donte Ingram & Alize Johnson)
Malevy had 15 pts, 10 reb, 2 asst, 1 steal, 2 blocks

Quite a stat line Wednesday for Malevy
playing for Santa Cruz in the G-League
19 pts on 9-15, 15 Reb, 5 asst
I just don't understand how Mal can put up the stats he does in the G-League and not get a chance to show his stuff in the NBA.

The Golden State Warriors reportedly have only 9 healthy players available for tonight's game and
have called up Malevy Leons from Santa Cruz
He missed last night's G-League game with Santa Cruz to catch a fligh to Memphis

** UPDATE - Malevy entered mid 1st qtr- & in the first 2 min he's on the court he gets 3 reb, two defensive stops & scores 2pts

broadcasters really complimenting Leons -
Warriors played well - Final score Warriors 133 - Memphis 112
all nine players who played contributed.
Malevy's stats- 17 minutes, 9 points, 8 reb, 2 asst, 2 steals, 1 block

LOTS of praise for Malevy coming from various sources

"AWESOME" Malevy Leons!

This Warriors blogger kinda mocks the Thunder for giving up so easily on Malevy and letting him go to the Warriors

the Warriors next play Sat 7:30pm vs the Lakers, and depending on how many healthy guys they have
Malevy may still be with them.
With 23 games remaining, the Warriors are 9 games from dropping out of the playoff picture, but they
are also just 4 games back of a playoff spot that would give them the early bye while the 7-10 teams play off.
So as soon as their starters are back, they could send Malevy back to Santa Cruz - he just need to keep impressing them.

“Compete, defend, rebound,” Leons said. “Just play as hard as possible and good things will happen.” …. I know who he leaned that from. Good job coach. Congrats Malevy.

Warriors are playing tonight vs the Lakers, but Malevy has not yet entered the game, and the Warriors
are playing badly, trailing by 18 at halftime.

edit - Malevy ended up playing 8 minutes, was 3-4, 6 pts, 1 reb

BTW- there are three other past Braves who are playing in the G-League - can anyone name them?
The answer is HERE ---> mouse over to see ---->>Sean East, Jayson Kent, Terry Roberts
