Lovie Smith out as head coach.

I suspect you are right, but money usually talks.
Even if he was able to listen to an offer from the Bears, the 49ers would likely step up with a raise and/or extension that would make it unlikely he'd leave.


BTW, Lovie Smith has 1 year left on his contract with the Bears, so he will get paid well for the next year (about $5.5 million).
And, as mentioned, he will almost certainly not have trouble finding another NFL job with his qualifications, and the requirements for NFL teams to hire minorities.
 
Lovie could not get the offense where it needed to be to compete. He had more than enough chances with offensive coordinators.

I like him as a coach but he just didn't get it done. Did not mind that he was not super emotional on the sideline, players seemed to do well with that. Emery (the new GM) is going to want to have one of his guys in there, can't blame him for that.

As much as I liked Lovie, he definitely didn't have much input in the offense and change was needed. He was a pretty successful head coach, but the offensive deficiencies in his regime was evident.
Nice job in your tenure Lovie. Hopefully better things ahead and a championship will be attainable as long as we have Cutler, Marshall, Forte, Bennett, Peppers, Jennings, Tillman, Briggs...oh, and yes, I guess Hester too, but he has never been my favorite and aggravates me more than any other Bear.

I believe I posted on here and I know I told my friends who are Bears fans that they should have traded Hester 3 years ago when he had some value. A couple of things IMO to watch here. How will the new coach and Cutler get along? If you listened to Chicago media this morning, this seemed to be an issue and I believe that Cutler can not be very easy to work with. At the very least, the new coach and GM will have to rebuild the defense as the players are starting to get a little old.

When he took over the 49ers, they had not made the playoffs for 8 years, and looked like they needed a new quarterback and some rebuilding, so I don't think that would deter him. But we have seen it many times- money talks.
Bears GM Phil Emery apparently has been told money is no object. This article lists several names he is interviewing.

That being said, I do not think there is any chance Harbaugh will be coaching the Bears. The 49ers will do whatever is necessary to keep him.

Harbaugh loves the bay area and I really cannot see him leaving a stable organization to head to a ownership group that is dysfunctional at best. Unless Lovie had substantial input into who they draft and brought in for FAs I'm blaming the front office for Da Bears failure this year.

On Cutler or Alex Smith, I like Cutler's skills a bit more but Smith is an ultimate team guy. Chemistry can go a long way. Smith will be the number one FA this year and there are a few teams that have already expressed interest in him. If I'm Da Bears I'd keep Cutler and buy a reliable O line, see if Urlacher will play for less. I'd then go after a bunch of young athletic defensive players that can learn from a very good savvy veteran group. I believe the Bears were good enough to be a SB contender if the O line was at least average. An average line would have given them a better running game, time for Cutler to throw and needed rest for the D.
 
I know he's not NFL proven but Jimbo Fisher sure has turned the Florida State Seminoles around - I'll bet his phone is ringing
more than a few times since so many NFL teams are currently hiring...
Jim & John Harbaugh did just fine jumping from the college ranks to the NFL
 
I would be very surprised if the gig went to a special teams guy. Seems to me if they fired Lovie for not being able to fix the offense, they would hire someone who can run the offense.

Would be happy with McCoy (Denver OC), Carmichael (NO OC), Arians (Indy OC). Bears have been after Clements (GB OC) for a while now. Not sold on Sullivan (Tampa Bay OC).
