Koch Bar commits to Bradley

Nice job Coach W!

KOCH BAR
Here's some nice recent highlights - the guy also appears to have nice passing ability & ability to see the court
(we have not had a solid big man/low post guy who can pass for **** since Bayo - nobody since 1998 has averaged more than ~1 asst per game - Will E. came closest at 1.17)

National recruiting guru Brian Snow is the one who broke the story on the commitment and hesays...
"Koch Bar will bring his athleticism, rebounding, and shot blocking to Bradley.

All it took was one official visit for 6-foot-9 center Koch Bar to know where he wanted to go to college.
The highly athletic and active post player decided to pick the Bradley Braves following his official visit to the school.
"I took a visit there and I really liked it," said Bar. "I got to meet the coaches, saw the campus, and I felt that it was the place for me."
Bar is someone who cares about academics and that along with the facilities sold him on the Braves.
"It is a very good school," said Bar. "Also I really liked the arena. It seems like a great place to play, and I just feel like it is perfect for me at Bradley."
This is a strong commitment for the Braves as not many players in the Missouri Valley Conference will be able to match Bar's combination of size and athleticism."

it's been a long time since we had a recruit that verballed this early - before the 4th of July for the following season..
Can anyone recall the last time it happened?

As we posted last week, Koch (pronounced like scotch) Bar visited Bradley last Friday and Saturday on an official visit. He loved everything about Bradley, the coaches, and the program.
He plays AAU ball with the Indiana Elite, and Assistant Coach Drew Adams' strong past connection with the Indiana Elite program played a big part in getting to know Koch Bar and his AAU coach and getting him to visit. Great work by the coaches.

And though Koch Bar is a high caliber athlete, has a tremendous upside, and is the type of big man Bradley rarely gets, he is not "the 79th ranked recruit for 2016 by Scout."
Here is the Scout.com ranking of 2016 players-
http://www.scout.com/college/basket...Recruiting&classYear=2016&minimumInterest=Low

He is not in the Scout.com top 100

Also, here is the ESPN Scout ranking-
http://espn.go.com/college-sports/basketball/recruiting/playerrankings/_/order/true

He is not among their Top 100 either, nor anyone's Top 100.

I wondered about that #79 ranking, as well. Perhaps it's a positional ranking (79th best center) or state ranking (#79 in Florida).

He might have been the #79 uncommitted recruit at the time. It looks like if you take the committed players out of the scout list that it gets down into that 3 star range.

Great work by the coaches. I am starting to get excited about Bradley again, after years of irrelevance.

One thing that article stated was: "Bar is someone who cares about academics and that along with the facilities sold him on the Braves."
"It is a very good school," said Bar. "Also I really liked the arena. It seems like a great place to play, and I just feel like it is perfect for me at Bradley."

This makes it clear the Bradley facilities and Carver Arena were important in getting him. Other recruits have said the same things. Some fans have said for a long time that facilities don't matter, and clearly they do. We just needed coaches who are capable of taking advantage of them, instead of squandering these last few years. I like where the program is now and where they are going. I have not been able to say that for a long time. When do tickets go on sale?

Koch Bar only started playing basketball about 3 years ago, then he came to the US about 18 months ago, and really only started getting good coaching and playing good competition about one year ago..
so I think if there's ever been a kid with a "huge upside" - this is him

btw- here's another couple stories from a couple years ago about the development of basketball in Sudan..it does mention all those Mooseheart kids
it mentions Bil Duany - one of Mark Adams' co-developers of A-Hope - and how they ended up in Indiana

a few other Indiana Elite 2016 kids are DI players

not a bad program to stay on the good side of...
they will all be at Adidas Invitational (Indianapolis) next weekend (starting Wed.)

I think the most important thing about this commit is getting his younger brother to commit in 4-5 years! 8th grader at 7'3"! Stick him in the middle and tell him to keep his arms up!

I am very excited about this commitment from Bar. And I was ready for a coach who would put some effort into recruiting and developing bigs. I guess it's the type of ball I like to watch... Heck it was largely our size and length that helped us compete in our last trip to the ncaa, so here's to a move back in that direction. Boo yah!

On further review....regarding the photo on Koch Bar's Twitter page where he tweets-
My little bro Chol Marial is blowing up Twitter this days, good job bro ...
...to clear up some confusion, despite the use of the term "little bro", I'm fairly certain that they are not really brothers. However, they are teammates at West Oaks Academy and they both originate from the same region of South Sudan.

We still might try to recruit the younger kid, though at 7'3", and still in the 8th grade, he'll certainly have other schools recruiting him.
