Jerrance a Free Agent

I noted there are DOZENS of stories in newspapers all over about what's going to happen to Jerrance Howard.....it's an even hotter topic than who's getting voted off Dancing with the Stars!!!!

So anyone else wonder why all the hub-bub over just ONE of the Illini assistants, when all the others - Gary Nottingham, Jay Price, and the rest - haven't gotten a single mention anywhere in the press as if nobody gives a hoot what happens to them...

Speaking of Memphis - they are expecting to sign a juco recruit Geron Johnson - who has had multiple arrests for criminal issues and drugs and has already been kicked out of two junior colleges...
BUT - Memphis still wants the kid -

Problem is that having been kicked out of school, now the kid may have trouble qualifying - but then, it's Memphis - and they'll find a way...unless the kid gets a call from Bill Self first...as is hinted in some talk on the Kansas board...
You just can't make this stuff up......

Will Jerrance find a seat when the music stops? He doesn't seem to be as hot a commodity as many Illini fans thought.

I have heard he has several offers that he is mulling over, and they all involve salaries near the top of all D1 assistants. So don't start passing the hat for JH just yet.
He was hoping Illinois would be interested, since he is so loyal to them, but now that the door is closed look for him to decide soon. I would guess DePaul, Memphis, or Kansas State, but there are several others involved.

I don't know if he was really hoping Illinois was interested...why would he not be at the press conference? It seems like if he wanted to he would have rallied the rest of the team and had them there....

Louisville is likely losing Richard Pitino as an assistant. Lots of people talking about headhunting Howard - and the cards can pay pretty well.

West Virginia assistant coach Jerrod Calhoun just accepted the head coaching job at DII Fairmont State. The official announcement will come Tuesday. With the open assistant position, I would not be surprised if Bob Huggins gets involved in the competetion for Jerrance Howard.

Here's a comment or two from Robert Smith, the Simeon coach who wanted one of the Illini assistant coaching spots..
he also talks a little about some kids BU is recruiting and the perception Chicago is sleazy in regards to recruiting ethics..

"Smith, 40, said he isn't bitter about not being seriously considered for the
vacancy at Illinois or any other major college position. "I'm realistic. I know it
is a longshot for me to jump from high school to a major Division I school
without any head coaching experience at the college level. But I felt I should
pursue it as long as the opportunity was there. I love what I do at Simeon
and what we have going on," he said.

In all candor, Smith didn't think the hiring process at Illinois would go as far
as it did. He never was interviewed by Illini athletic director Mike Thomas but
he was interviewed by the search team. "I'm glad they considered me. I did
what all other candidates did. Some got interviews, some didn't," Smith said.

He said he probably wasn't as qualified as most of the candidates, especially
those with head coaching experience at the college level. "But if (Thomas) is
a risk-taker, I'm the one to pick. But (Thomas) made the best choice for the
university for going ahead," Smith said.

But Smith has some advice for new coach John Groce and his staff as they
go about the difficult task of rebuilding Illinois' program and attracting the
caliber of talent necessary to put a championship contender on the floor.

"You have to reach back into the communities, not just the kids and their
parents. You have to talk Illinois basketball in restaurants and barber shops.
You have to promote the program. It hasn't been promoted that well lately,"
Smith said.

"You have to get the kids to stay home and commit to going to school here.
Kids watch and see where other kids are going across the country. Kids want
to play with some people. That's huge right now. If you persuade a player
like Jabari Parker to come to Illinois, as DePaul did with Mark Aguirre, they
can bring other good players with them."

Would love to know how Duke and Kentucky are spreading the word at the local restaurants and barber shops.

Official announcement - Jerrance at SMU
HOW IN THE WORLD DOES Illinois let him go and NOT hire him?

Groce must be insecure. No way you let a talent like this go unless you fear his presence may be a bit bigger than your own. That is the only reason that I can think of. Groce is a good coach and will most likely do well, but hopefully, for his sake, he doesn't try to build his team the "mid-major" way by getting guys "under the radar" and developing them. You have to get the "best of the best" and win right away.

Maybe it's the opposite- I think he is secure in his own ability to recruit and coach and he wants complete control over the selection of his staff and is not willing to accept someone thrust on him by the administration that could be a threat to his job down the line.

Practically every player Memphis has recruited since Derrick Rose's ineligibility cost them 30 forfeits has been ruled ineligible or suspended at one time or another...

...warning - this is an old thread resurrected to followup on Geron Johnson
anyone see the ESPN game last night Memphis-Tennessee?
Memphis did indeed find a way to get Geron Johnson on campus and qualified...and he's pretty good - helping Memphis to beat Tennessee...
He is one of Memphis' key players....

Anyway - ex-BU recruit Stan Simpson barely touched the floor - he was scoreless in one garbage minute, but did pick up two fouls
