Jealous of other Exempt Tourneys for Valley Schools

You say everything is relative, but want to look at things in isolation. League finishes this decade:

2,8,5,6,8,5,4,5,4,5; avg. place 5.2
9,5,3,2,2,1,6,9,5,2; avg. place 4.4

Tell me which is consistently better, which has shown upward mobility not once, but twice, and who has shown an ability to contend for league crowns repeatedly. And then you can tell me what's random and what's not.

It is relative. You think ESPN cares where WSU finished in 2000? the last several years BU as been better. Yes, you can keep extending the time period until WSU looks better, but the fact of the bater is, for three years straight WSU was worse than BU, and finished second to last one of those years, something BU hasn't done at all this decade. Over the decade WSU is .8 places higher, less than one place! Over the last few years they are CONSIDERABLY lower. So, tell me how again it is laughable to compare them to BU? The only program that has consistently been better than BU the whole decade is CU, and recently UNI. Saying anyone else is tons better is just being frustrated, and not putting it in perspective.

The one valley championship and then quick exit in the NCAA's I guess??

Yeah Drake for me is an example of random variation (kinda like ISU blue and Larry Bird). They've been in the MVC since like 1621 or something like that, and almost always been in the bottom half. I think I'd put Mo St in front of Drake...

In the interest of respectful discourse, please re-read my initial post in this thread, de-emphasize the harsh language that I may have carefully considered and chose to use to make an effective point, consider the above numbers that I've supplied range from 2001-2010, and tell me where I argued anything you are arguing in the above post.

I mentioned that when Wichita started their run in these events where they've gotten potentially better exposure (again, please note the carefully selected language) their situation was relevant.

Please also understand that these events are arranged many times at least 1.5 to 2 years in advance.

Finally, when Wichita is talking to the organizers of these events, they will compare themselves against league members using whatever criteria they can devise that makes them look better than other league members. So they will be selective. And they can easily argue anything I've posted WITH CREDIBILITY why they deserve the opportunities they've received. And they've been rewarded in kind.

The first step to improving the situation is recognizing it.

This.

It's still somewhat fresh in everyone's mind, so they still have a little bump from that for a couple of years. They get a little bit more attention in the press, for example, Drake got infinitely more press than SIU, ISU, and Bradley combined in ESPN preseason/prediction coverage.

It's unfair but it's the world we live in. I'm definitely not arguing that it's fair this is the case.

Okay, so you're measuring strictly based on media attention. I can buy that. (Now, back whence you came, Drake!)

Yeah. Otherwise there's no way that SIU or The Drake would belong above us on a list like that.

Now the next job is to get our media attention up to the level that corresponds with our program level in the Valley (4th, IMO).

Gregg Marshall developed a good reputation at Winthrop of producing good teams and going to the big dance. The big time tourneys expect the teams to be competitive and WSU has provern they will be there. The previous coach was recruited away from WSU by a BCS school. WSU has developed a very good reputation and they are rewarded for it.

Marshall

Marshall

Well said Marshall had a reputation!! Came to WSU and has built up the program into a contender in a short period of time!! So based on last years performance and the pre season picks they deserve to get some hype!! It is their test for the year to make a name for yourself in one of these tourneys or lay an egg!! We have done nothing to contend lately or create any hype other than a 20 win season, which has lost it's luster too!! Maybe we should shoot for a 25 win season!!

Meanwhile, back at the PCC, BU is trailing EIU at the half by 7...

Not a strong case for invitations to prestigous exempt tourneys.

So far this preaseason, I am jealous of other MVC teams....

I don't know about other MVC schools. An early realtimerpi.com has the SWAC ahead of the MVC :o

All I want to add is that using the fact that WSU "only" took 300 fans to freakin Hawaii is crazy. Whenever the Shox have played on the continental united states they travel closer to 1000. They had a very large group in Florida for the Old Spice Classic during a complete rebuilding year. They traveled very large to Vegas when they went there. Obviously we took close to 2000 fans to KC last year (granted that one was in our "backyard" and I was disappointed it wasn't more). The Gazelle group also loves how we travel, so that has helped some.

I know it was only one poster pointing out how we only travel with 300 fans. Just thought I would throw that out there to defend the fanbase.

Here is an article that Suellentrop wrote recently talking about how WSU got invited to these tourneys:

Not to worry Shockerfan13....After tonight's BU loss to EIU, you won't be hearing another peep from BU fans about the merits of WSU or BU going to prestigous preseason exempt tournaments.
