Indiana coaching search

Article about the Indiana coaching search.

Indiana has formed a 10 person "Blue Ribbon" committee to conduct their coaching search.
My opinion is that the AD should just do it himself, and get the job done, asap. A committee approach, especially a 10 person committee, will cause things to drag out, and probably end up with a decision that nobody likes.

I see your point, Da Coach. However, isn't leaving it to the AD how they got into the whole Kelvin Sanction mess to begin with?

The trustees still had to agree to the hire of a guy under NCAA probation, but everyone was bloodthirsty for a top coach and recruiter who could win immediately.

Did anyone else watch the CBS broadcast of the Indiana-Arkansas game Friday night?
Billy Packer and Jim Nance whined about how Indiana's adminstration has undermined Coach Dan Dakich, and hurt the team by forging ahead with their coaching search committee before the Hoosier's season ended. They both basically blamed the poor play last night and at the end of the season on the administration.

Of course, that's ridiculous.
First, usually teams play harder and overachieve when they are playing for a coach's job. So if this is the case, why did the Hoosiers mail it in?

Secondly, Indiana didn't just start playing poorly last night. They have played very poorly for the last 3+ weeks. They lost 2 of their last 3 conference games, including to mediocre teams Minnesota and Penn State, and barely beat Northwestern prior to that. And they lost again to Minnesota in their opening game in the Big Ten Tournament. All of these losses came before the school announced this search committee. So how do you explain that, Billy?

By the way- here is a funny article about Billy Packer--

But there is strong evidence that Dakich is NOT the guy the players wanted.
Stories have been pretty well documented that the players wanted assistant Ray McCallum to coach them and were even willing to boycott if they had to play for Dakich.
And I think it showed, too, as they (with few exceptions) did not seem to want to bust their butts for Dakich. Even the suspension of Jamarcus Ellis is somehow tied to this, as the stories about the players not wanting to play for Dakich abound on the insider boards at IU.

So I think Dakich did everything he could, and the administration did nothing, but certainly nothing to undermine Dakich, as they have to get a coach quickly or the players will all bolt, and I see that the whiney, spoiled players who had in their mind that they controlled the system are really at fault here.

Six players boycotted the coach's first practice....and there seemed to be constant player dissatisfaction, yet IU has now extended the contracts of both Dakich and McCallum through 2009!!
So if they bring in a new coach, the guy isn't going to be able to pick his own assistants??
Looks like the inmates are running this asylum!
I'd place 75% of the blame on the spoiled players, and the other 25% on the ex-ISU guy
who created this whole mess with the hire of Sampson in the first place, AD Rick Greenspan.

By the way, Dakich thinks he is the best candidate for the IU job and believes he should be the one they select

You say the AD sould do it! Was he or was he not the guy that lead Indiana to where they are today with the hiring of Sampson?
Before anyone feels sorry for IU, lets remember how they got to were they are today!
IU had one of the best B-Ball program's in the country. It had winning teams, with good smart dedicated kids with average B Ball ability, it had one of the highest graduating % of players in the NCAA and had the cleanest run program in college. Then it all started with the firing of the coach, the person that put this program togather! IU allowed a few academium's (1 prof. in general) (who is not at IU anymore) to outest the BIG BAD BULLIE(Named by the Media). Yes I know BK did somethings that should not have been tolerated but who do you think should of stepped in and stopped them and keep them from happening again (IU). So IU has no other place to look for blame than within!
If IU wants to bring its program back to where it once was, I have to go along with what Dick Vitille said after Sampson was fired, bring back the creator and coach, Bobby Knight!!

Bobby Knight is only one or two bad calls away from having a massive MI, and then what would you have???

You'd have either another head coach search or you'd have Dan Dakich leading your program to an underperforming, sub-.500 record.

They need if anything to get a YOUNG equivalent to a Bobby Knight, not an old washed up guy, a shadow of his former self, who hasn't recruited the top talent well for a decade.

If he has not had a MI by now, I think maybe you or myself stand a better chance of having one before he does.
As for Dan Dakich, he is just another victim of the Sampson mistake!
As for your Bob Knight assessment, he maybe a littile worn but not washed up. If you look around the country how meny of these young coachs can't cut it for what ever reason. BK has made it happen where ever he go's. Look were he took Texas Tech. in a short time and once again without any big name recruites! Just plain good, smart, dedicated, team players, that wanted to be there and learn & play from the winnest coach in BB today and get a good education while playing in a quality program. (NO Back Room Phone Calls at Army, IU or TT).
Maybe it is time to get back to the basic's and quit making college basketball a play gound for uneduated cry babies, and want to be's. UI needs this now as this is a program that is in deep disaray and needs a proven leader to turn it around sooner then later even if it is short term!!
BRING THE GENERAL HOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

A bit speculative--- but----
I wonder if there might have been a bit more to Bob Knight leaving in mid-season from Texas Tech, and his quick hire as a sit down analyst.
We will never know for sure, but I wonder if RMK's doc told him he needs to get a little less stressful job and give up coaching.
