I Support JL Thread

So you give him 2 more seasons??

Why?

I think this year and next year is reasonable. We have had and continue to have way too many injuries. As others have said, we were picked to finish 6th this year and next year was supposed to be our year. Next year we will have virtually everybody back and will have enough to depth to weather injuries. There will be NO excuse if we don't win next year.

Who said next year is supposed to be our year? We have the same team as last year for the most part, a team that finished 4th and had as good of a shot at the top 3 as any in JL's tenure. Yet we'll be lucky to avoid Thursday. Why would a team that went from 4th to play-in be expected to win a title?

Every team has injuries. Since when was Dodie Dunson the key to the season? You'll be able to come up with excuses for JL forever if you want. No other coach at BU has ever gotten this much rope. I ask again, what are we afraid of?

Why do people act like finishing 6th would be OK because that's where we were picked? I cite my paragraph above as to why it's not acceptable. If we were picked 8th and finished there, would that be OK?

Don't kid yourself...if JL comes back and we muddle our way to anything short of a league title, there will be plenty of excuses. There always is.

I also support JL, but more importantly, I support the players on the team. I want them to be successful. That is independent of my thoughts as to whether or not JL is the guy to lead them there.

My two questions are this: 1) Do you believe the talent is in place to finish first in the MVC next year? and if so, 2) Do you believe JL is the guy to reach that end?

I'll bite.....

1)Yes I believe the talent is there for next year....

2)IMO JL is a very good offensive coach...unfortunately, there is a whole other side of the game.....so as it stands.....without help on the defensive side, NO.

When I was much, much younger I used to pretend I was Jim Les and dive for balls all over the court and street. Each time I would yell Jim's name out as I did this and it would give my friends a chuckle. This determination is exactly what I thought Jim would instill in his players, but I think I have finally realized this is something you have to be born with.

I'll always support him as the coach of BU basketball and will always have a fond memories of him as both a player and coach.

My support doesn't mean I'm happy that were only mid-major in our own conference. Whether it's fair or not, I still want BU to be mentioned in the same light as Xaiver, Gonzaga and others one day and be expected to compete for the MVC title every year.

I support Jim Les... but as stated before with the no experience assistant coaches it makes it hard to see things that the assistants might see when the head coach doesn't... I've been in the golf business and if you are going to run a well known golf course you need household assistants that has experience instead of no experience.. and no experience is what we have... until we get better assistants i don't see this team reaching its potential as fast...

I support Jim Les !!! thank you for the thread, it is what it is.... our Braves are good, but they are not the best. Next year dont really look that promising if you look what the rest of the conference is going to return. I am sure that Les is more upset about the team performance than any of us, I also think that Les will get it right and we will have a shot in the conference tournament. But getting the ship right will include a few or even several more losses.

I do support JL but that doesn't mean there are not problems.
For those that want to make changes be careful what you ask for as it may be worse then what you have now.
The question some have asked was this was suppose to be our year but then other teams also returned players and the league as a whole has gotten a lot better and next year will be even more so.
Next year depends what we can get to help us out on the inside. I hope we can get one more big guy or that JP is ready (and I believe he will be) to help out. The inside is why we can't compete for the top 4 places this year.

Missouri State wasn't afraid to make a move. They canned a guy with a record better than our guy. What are we afraid of?

if you want to see how fickle fan bases are...not just here but everywhere..

note that numerous Valley teams' message boards have threads running WANTING to get rid of their coaches...and even some of the top teams..

Check it out..

There are plenty of examples of the opposite result, too.
Remember that Evansville canned Jim Crews, who had just a few years earlier won 23 games and finished 1st in the MVC, and hired a new coach back in 2002, and it didn't prove to be as successful as they hoped. The 5 years Steve Merfeld was there, he never came close to a winning season, despite being highly successful at Hampton (he averaged over 25 wins his last 2 seasons at Hampton, made the NCAA twice, and had one of the top upsets in NCAA tournament history).
Maybe their 2007 change will work, but as of now, in Marty Simmons' 3rd season, Evansville is all alone in last place, the only winless team in the MVC, and with a league worst RPI of 271. Jim Les' record his first 3 years compared to this makes him look like a HOF coach!
And don't think that Evansville is too much different than Bradley.
Things could always be worse, so, as was said, be careful what you wish for.

I didn't say you can't do better just said be careful of what you wish for-it also can be worse and you won't find a bigger BU cheerleader the JL uless it would be DS

I don't want a cheerleader, I want a guy that can win basketball games. I don't think that's asking for or wishing for too much. Every other guy before JL was able to do it, and when they couldn't anymore someone else was brought in. It should be no different now.

Injuries...Tennessee just beat Kansas with 3 walkons and two freshman. Makes you wonder what percentage is coaching and what percentage is players?????

Let's not overstate things 9. . .

These things were going to be done anyway, regardless if JL ever returned to coach or not.

It worked out that JL's best years coincided with the big push to move some of these projects forward.
