I have heard the name of Fred Hoiberg from a couple Illinois insiders this season. Apparently, he expects to get fired by the Bulls, and has made it known he'd be interested.

Well he hired Lovie quick after the fire and many of these coaches are still playing....Monty Williams has been thrown a lot too on the Illini board..

It seems like the AD doesn't waste much time........we'll see how it goes

according to report:
"In 2014, Illinois gave Groce a contract extension through 2018-19 and pays him about $1.7 million annually."
(base salary plus "additional compensation")

However, the terms of his compensation if terminated are quite clearly mapped out as follows:

If terminated, he will be owed "two times the base salary (base salary=$400,000) multiplied by the number of full or fractional years remaining in the contract period.
(roughly two years)

So it would appear the as of right now, the University would owe John Groce about $1.6 million upon termination.

His contract does also say..
"3.2.d Deferred Compensation The Head Coach shall be vested
and eligible for a retention bonus in the amount of $500,000.00, if Head Coach
remains continuously employed as the University's Head Varsity Coach - Men's
Basketball through April 30, 2017"

...so I guess he does NOT get that bonus..

I am also hearing SMU head coach Tim Jankovich' name mentioned. He was an assistant at Illinois under Bill Self in 2002-03, and at Kansas, and of course was head coach at ISU from 2007-2012.

I saw Monty Williams has already said he wants to stay involved in the NBA but we all know $$$$ can change about anything.

While I'd welcome one of those recruits with open arms, I won't be holding my breath in anticipation. However, somebody might transfer out of u of I. I know dj williams has been rumored to be transferring and I personally think he'd be a good fit here, even if he had to sit out a year. Can anyone think of any other player on their roster that would be good fits/might be bolting?

Tis the season of wild rumors and reckless speculation after all :p

I would think the AD is going to want to move quick on this which would be the best way to hope to keep next years recruits. The big question is do you go after a hot shot assistant, do you go after a successful mid major head coach, do you go after a big name coach who is not currently coaching, do you go after a coach who has ties to Illinois. A name you haven't heard from in a while is a hot shot assistant with Illini ties. I think Jerrance Howard could be a fit here. He would definitely be able to sell Fighting Illini basketball and he might be ready for the head spot.

I knew that Josh Whitman would be quick with his decision on a new coach but WOW. The new head coach is Brad Underwood who left Oklahoma State after just 1 year. Not even 24 hours after Underwood's now former team lost to Michigan he's now the new head coach for the Illini. Underwood spent 11 years as an assistant at Western Illinois and started his coaching career at Hardin-Simmons, where Lou Henson got his start. He was the head coach at Stephen A. Austin for 3 years until he was hired at Oklahoma State last year. He has a career record of 109-27 and his teams have made the big dance every year. There will be a press conference at Noon on Monday to introduce him. I imagine he'll be somewhere in the building on Monday night when they host Boise State in the NIT.

yeah......again a complete surprise by Whitman and it sure looks like this was one on his short list. Underwood wasn't on anyone's list mainly because of just going to OSU......but I think he'll do well...

It shows they were looking way before the Illinois coach was fired. He was fired already in their minds before the season was even ended is my guess.. Quick!!

John Groce's name as well as Geno Ford's name are being mentioned multiple sources as candidates for he open Cleveland State head coaching job
