Greg McDermott hired for Creighton job

Da Coach

It has been rumored that Greg McDermott, coach of Iowa State and former UNI coach, may be a candidate for the now-open job at Creighton. McDermott has multiple years left on his contract at Iowa State, but has been getting some pressure there by the fan base that is growing restless.
It is being reported that Creighton Athletic Director Bruce Rasmussen was in West Des Moines tonight, supposedly to meet with someone about the job. Could it have been McDermott?

It is also possible that Dana Altman's 2 long-time assistants, Darian DeVries (12 years) and Brian Fish (also 12 years) will also be considered to replace Altman, though unofficial reports suggest they both may have offers to join Altman in Oregon.

How is this possible? They didn't advertise the open job for 14 days, they did worry about complying with EEOC guidelines, they didn't consider and interview minorities, and they didn't take weeks to assemble a committee.:D

IMO, a great job by Creighton. Their AD did what ADs should do, he took responsibility and got the guy he wanted.

Greg McDermott's Division I career record is 149-131 (.532) with 3 NCAA appearances and no NCAA wins.
His MVC record in 5 seasons at UNI was 90-63 with no 1st place finishes.

His record in 4 seasons at Iowa State was 59-68 (.465). he finished tied for 7th, 11th, 10th, and 11th those 4 years in the 12-team Big 12.
As I said, I think this is a great hire for Creighton, and a good move for McDermott. But how often has a coach with this bad of a record been hired by another school at a raise in salary?

He will also be coaching against his own son who will be at UNI next year...will he consider transfer to Creighton?

Here's something kinda intriguing...
go to this site...
"fireMcDermott.com" and see where it takes you...
right to the official Iowa State athletic web site!!

don't you think he if he wanted to transfer to play with dad he would have committed to Iowa State in the beginning?

There is a report that McDermott knew there was a good chance he wouldn't be at Iowa State beyond 1 more year, so he didn't want his son to come there and not be able to play for him.
I suspect he'll ask out of his LOI to UNI and it will be granted, then he'll end up at Creighton after they sort out the scholarship situation there. Creighton currently has more scholarships committed for next year than is allowed.

Now it will be interesting to see who Iowa State hires as McDermott's replacement, and how quickly they act. There are rumors that Billy Gillispie could resurface at Iowa State.:?

I agree, it will be interesting:) Maybe they can get Pink Floyd out of his contract at UTEP and bring him back:-o Oh:-o, wait a minute the Bulls and Pax will be trying to do that after LeBron and Cleveland get done with them:lol: Sorry, just had to say it:cry:

I agree great move for McDermott. I am not sure if it is great for Creighton. Time will tell.

Probably agree with you there. With the kind of money they were offering, the kind of arena they play in, and the kind of success they've had there, CU could have certainly had a very deep and talented pool of candidates to choose from. However, they did grab a guy who knows the Valley inside and out, and is a proven winner in this league. It's certainly a safe hire for CU.

unless they lock him in long term and come to find out his lack of success, humongous player defections, and fan dissent at Iowa State were not weird flukes.....

McDermott is a true Valley coach, which is probably why he struggled so much at ISU. I look forward to the CU vs. UNI match-ups to see who's the better coach (McDermott or Jacobsen). A few years ago, I thought UNI was in big trouble when Jacobsen took McDermott's spot - the last 2 years has totally reversed my thinking.

I wish Creighton a better season than last, but not as strong as BU!

I have cited for 6-7 years how so many of his recruits end up never playing for him.....they either are offered so early and fizzle out, change their minds, or are flops, or even when they get there, they don't play or quit & transfer elsewhere.
The sum total of such names of players who have bolted or defected has now reached
MORE THAN 30 over the past 6-8 years...

Then when he got to Iowa State, virtually all the players who were there left (8 or 9) and
since then another 20 or so of his own recruited players have bolted for various reasons......
Michael Taylor, dismissed, Dodie Dunson, transfer, Wesley Johnson, transfer
Alex Thompson, Cory Johnson, Marcus Brister, transfer, Lucca Staiger, Clayton Vette, Carlos Boozer, Diante Garrett, Craig Brackins (went early entry), Sean Haluska, Jordan Dykstra, Dominique Buckley, Chris Colvin, Justin Hamilton, LA Pomlee, Wes Eikmeier, Clinton Mann, Bryan Peterson, and I think there's even more.....

All I can say is that no coach in all of college basketball has as regular, consistent, and impressive player turnover than McD...there's something quite consistent here and Creighton people need to get ready for more of the same......
