Final score- Chattanooga 67 Bradley 65

I was at the Tulane game as a 8th grader sitting/standing in the about the 10th row! It was probably my 3rd or 4th game that year. That run to the NIT championship really cemented my lifelong fandom. I even got out of school and went with my friends to see the team arrive at the airport after they won it all. Such fun!

I was there with a date, now celebrating our 40th anniversary. I signed up for classes at BU so I could tell her I was a student, and she would go out with me.

Have not missed many games since the move to PCC. Go Braves

I was there for the Tulane game, too, The last official game at the Robertson Memorial Fieldhouse.
I also was able to go to NYC and attended the games in Madison Square Garden, the semifinal win over Oklahoma and the Championship over Purdue. I also got to see the other team in the Final Four play, Georgia. Their star was the amazingly athletic Dominique Wilkins, who put on a show.
They allowed Bradley fans to storm the court after the championship win, so, of course, I did.
Below are photos of the celebration, and a couple photos as the team was leaving the hotel lobby the next morning after the championship. Joe Dalfonso, the Sports Information Director at the time, asked me to hold the NIT trophy while he went to the bathroom.

Where were you (where was everyone) - the evening of Tuesday March 18th, 1982 ? This was the last time that Bradley played in the NIT quarterfinals and Bradley hosted Tulane (Green Wave) University. It was to be the finale - the last Bradley home game played at Robertson Memorial Stadium - the 500th Bradley game to be played at the Robertson Memorial Fieldhouse - and before the game Bradley had won 399 of those games. I was in front of my TV set - going crazy during the game. :) Incredible memories - incredible season - just like this year. GO BRADLEY BRAVES.!!!

I was at the game sitting on the floor , it was crazy celebrating with the team after on the raised floor. That was one special team that would have won a lot of games in the big tour.

ESPN match-up predictor has BU at 78.6% chance to win. Line is BU -4.5. O/U 149.5.

And if we win, a likely match-up against Loyola again in the final four! Man, if only we had Zek and Hannah I think we'd have a real shot at winning this thing. I suppose we still do, but not as likely now.

Chattanooga has one thing in common with Bradley. They got into the mix with the NCAA over Native American Imagery in their nickname and logo back in the late 1990's.
They are officially the University of Tennessee Chattanooga, but for the last several years, their athletic teams only use the name Chattanooga.
Their nickname now is the "Mocs". For many decades, since the 1920's, their nickname was The Moccasins. In the 1920's it originally referred to a moccasin snake. But before too long, since Indian reference became common back then, it switched to refer to the shoes worn by Indians, and their logos and mascots all included Indians and other Native American imagery.
But in 1996, when the NCAA began cracking down on schools with Native American names and imagery, Chattanooga adopted the state bird of Tennessee as their new mascot, which happened to be the Mockingbird. That allowed them to shorten the nickname to The Mocs, which in turn, allowed them to eliminate all of the Native American references. The womens' teams are the "Lady Mocs" (still a little bit of sexism there).
The mascot now is a giant blue and gold (the school colors) Mockingbird named "Scrappy". There is a story behind the name Scrappy, too.

Bradley has played Chattanooga 3 times in their history, and Bradley is 1-2 against them
utc-mocs.png

Bradley is now 29-20 all time in the NIT. They have won 4 championships (1957, 1960, 1964, and 1982). Only St. John's has won more (6).
And Bradley has finished 2nd twice (1950 and 1959), one 3rd place, and one 4th place finish.

DC - Does NIT still play the 3rd-4th place game? I believe that ended after Covid? I couldn't find that game the last year (since they left the Garden for Championship games)...

So has St. John's won more NIT games overall than BU? Couldn't find that in searching online.
Also, in 1982, the NCAA tourney was likely more prestigious than the NIT, correct? (Still learning about NCAA hoops before my time!) :)

Yes, St. John's has been to 30 NITs, and they have won the NIT Championship 6 times (1943, 1944, 1959, 1965, 1989, 2003). Their 2003 title was vacated due to an NCAA violation (impermissible benefits), so they have won 5 times officially.
Their overall record is 45-30, but the official record stands at 40-30 due to the 5 wins in 2003 being vacated. - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._John%27s_Red_Storm_men%27s_basketball#NIT_resu lts

They were invited last year (2024), but declined. - https://redstormsports.com/news/202...s-statement-on-national-invitation-tournament

Curious how everyone is feeling about our chances tomorrow without Zek and Hannah. We lose so much in so many ways with Darius out, I wonder if it’s just going to be a lot more minutes for Davis and Thomas?
My feeling is that we have to shoot the 3’s well and often, and hope our defensive intensity is there. Losing DH hurts on both ends of the court, but being at home should give us a boost, but I do think the 3 point shooting will be the factor for us from here on out. Thoughts?

Tommy you've said it several times that the reason we've won so much this season is due to our depth. I like how Burch, Meta, and CT (last game) have stepped up lately. No doubt it will be a tough one, but I am hopeful that our home crowd will carry us, and remember - this is DUKE'S last game in Peoria ever! He will leave it all on the court, and the guys will rally around him...and they want to win for their wounded warrior, the heart of Bradley hoops for 5 yrs, Darius!

I also like how we're like 9-1 in games decided by 5 pts or less. Could very well be one of those back n forth games, and 38-0 when leading with 5 min. to go is JUST PLAIN INSANE!!!

I am sad for Darius and kinda neutral towards Zek, as this was per his wishes.
but I want to see someone step up big time- it would be legendary - like Kerry Cook in 1982 or Luqman Lundy in 2019.

I've been pretty active on here, so for my last post of the day, I'm picking the Quan to be that guy tomorrow night.
But it really could be anyone!

I like the way you think, Yoda! I’m calling a Duke repeat of his Missouri State performance in the past. Get ready for the 3’s to drop like rain from him!

Not having Zeke and Darius will definitely be a factor. But the rest of the team stepped up when needed. We won on George Mason's home court without Zek and Darius. Speaks volumes about the heart and character of the team. Deen's last game in front of the fans. Hope he goes out in winning fashion. Will need Cory Thomas, Christian Davis, and continued good play from Meta to pull it out. Does anyone know if Darius will be on the sidelines rooting on his teammates. Let's get a big crowd and send them off to Hinckle Field House. Will try my absolute best to make the trip should they win. "LET'S GO BRAVES"

Yes, George Mason was 17-1 at home this season and 9-0 at home against A-10 opponents. That is pretty impressive for Bradley to come away with the win.

I think it will be Burch. I think he will be double digits tomorrow night

If we play like we are the underdog, we have a solid chance of winning… better than 50% IMO.

This year we play FAR better when we play desperate but focused.

When we come in thinking we are better, we either play to very close wins, or we take the L.

I watched Loyola/USF last night. Down 2 starters now, we are the underdog in every game we pay from here out!
