ESPN's top 25 transfers- Josh Cunningham #15

Who will be the highest bidder ? Stay tuned. Looks like a lot of bench time to me unless he picks DePaul.

The only school out of that group that would maybe be involved with bidding for Josh would be DePaul. The rest of the schools don't have to bid for players.

Sorry poor attempt at sarcasm. Point was lot of splinters for Josh.

Purdue, Arizona,S Carolina, DePaul, Michigan St and Notre Dame among those listed for Josh

Goodman has now expanded that list of potential destinations ...
"Arizona, DePaul, Michigan State, Notre Dame, St. John’s, Minnesota, Purdue, South Carolina, UIC, Dayton, Colorado State"

...but could Reggie Lynch's decision to take the open ride at Minnesota might close that door...
Would love to see him land at UIC ...

So do we place JC in the coaching change fallout category, or, the suddenly thinking BU/MVC aren't "big enough" for my obvious talent category?

Seems to me to be more of the latter than former...

Hot dog! We are going to be pretty darn good next year with three recruits who are better than one headed for a BCS school!

Which one needs someone who loves to shoot outside of his range and usually miss? Unless he changes his game he will be known, to me anyway, as the most overrated recruit in a long time. If he would have played where he belonged he probably would have had decent stats and the team might have won more than 9 games.

but for those who have been around 20+ yrs, you'd have to agree he has what Bayo Akinkunle came to BU with....
a close-in game and active on the boards.....
Bayo was able to develop into an effective short-range scorer as well as one of the best - if not the best - rebounders Bradley has had in five decades..
Josh could have done the same but is looking for the short cut to the bright lights...

Been around a lot more than 20 years and think if he would have played where he belonged, he would have averaged in double figures in points and rebounds. This team was so bad it needed someone to take charge and he didn't have it in him to do it. He'd rather shoot the 3 pointer and usually miss.

Chico- I have reason to believe a couple things that explain what you describe...

-first - when shooting unopposed in practice - Josh actually hit 35-40% from the arc
The coaching staff apparently concluded we could use this ability as a little bit of a 'secret weapon'

-second - just like when we suddenly "discovered" Nate Wells also had a little bit of 3-point potential in him, Geno was hoping that Bradley could benefit from Josh getting and taking the open 3 at times....with the defenses lagging off cuz nobody really knew he could make them

-thus- it was NOT fully Josh' idea to be taking those shots

-he was actually instructed to do so in a bit of poor judgement from the coaching staff that actually thought he would make more of them, and who hoped to showcase Josh as a multi-talented kid whose presence on the BU roster would buy some more time for the guys who recruited him.

-but also he didn't make many and the whole plan collapsed fromt here

Josh rebounded very well as was. With him standing on the outside it actually gave him a chance to pick up a head of steam when attacking the offensive glass. Since he was generally shorter than his matchups, he needed to beat them to the ball with jumping, quickness and positioning, which he could maximize by not being stuck 6 inches from his defender in the paint. He didn't show many post up skills. He seemed to have trouble creating a clean look when he was posted up and the defense allowed him to go one-on-one. And our perimeter shooting was poor enough that teams didn't hesitate to double anyone stuck in the post.

Josh got most of his points on put backs and in transition, which was what his game was in high school the few games I saw of his. I'm not sure he had the skills to be a back to the basket guy without someone coaching him up on those.

Ultimately his teammates and the coaching scheme prevented him from maximizing his talents. The few times he would screen for Warren Jones in a pick and roll look he did a very good job of catching and finishing on the move. I have no doubt in the right fit he could be a really impactful player on offense, and he already is a force on the glass. With a little bit of development as a shooter he should be an outstanding college player.

I am rooting for him even if he bailed on Bradley. To be honest, he left a situation that was devolving quickly rather than stick it out and try to fix a team that has had a half decade of failure. I think we will turn things around without him, but it might have been in his best interests to leave tbh just as it was in Patrick O'Bryant's best interests to go pro after his sophomore year even if he wasn't fully ready to play in the NBA.

How was it in POB's best interest? Do you mean money wise? Even I knew he wasn't ready for the NBA and he really hurt the BU program by leaving. With the players we have coming in so far, Josh could have helped fix, as you say, the program. Better keep your long pants on Josh, splitters hurt.

There were a couple good reasons for POB to declare for the NBA draft in 2006, and neither of them had anything to do with his development as an NBA center.

The year POB left Bradley was the first year the NBA instituted the rule that high schoolers had to do 1 year of college (or wait 1 year after high school) to be eligible for the NBA draft. That made the 2006 NBA draft very thin with big men, since the players that were great out of high school could not declare for the draft and had to wait a year, and any good big men who were 1 year post high school already had declared the year before.

If POB had waited 1 more year, and every year after, there would have been a bigger pool of good big men entering the draft and POB probably would have been pushed down and out of the lottery. Plus, after the 2006 Sweet 16 run, and POB's incredible performance against Pitt, his draft value was never going to get any higher.

What I've never understood is this. If a college student leaves school to take a job at a factory, nobody says or word or cares. If a basketball player leaves college early to go to work in the NBA and make more in one year that 99% of the people in a lifetime, a lot of people think it's a bad move. I never hear people criticize football or baseball players for leaving early and turning pro. Just basketball. If a person really wants to get their degree, they can always go back and get it.

DC answered that perfectly. In addition to that pool of big guys being thin, most NBA talent evaluators probably hadn't even heard of POB and thought highly of Aaron Gray, Pitt's starting center. POB had an outstanding game against Gray, greatly boosting his stock. Had POB stayed even one more year, NBA guys would have paid attention to his games all year long and found out he wasn't really worth a lottery pick. He cashed in when his stock was at its highest and more power to him.

Reread my post. I asked if he meant money wise didn't I?
