Eddie Sutton comes out of retirement

Da Coach

The 2007-2008 coaching changes are beginning but not as early as last year when Dan Monson was fired after just the first 7 games of the season.

San Francisco's new coach will be Eddie Sutton ("interim") replacing Jessie Evans (45-57 in 3+ years).

........there is an MVC connection in this....as one of San Francisco's better players,
Vince Polakovic was just suspended by the NCAA for 24 games, causing San Francisco
to go into a tailspin and lose five of their last six games. Polakovic was cited by the NCAA for the same rule as
Iowa State's Lucca Staiger, for playing on a German pro team. One further coincidence, is that Vince Polakovic
was originally recruited to University of Northern Iowa by Greg McDermott, who now is the coach at Iowa State where Staiger plays. Polakovic barely played for McDermott, however. After UNI's first two games in 2004-2005 he was not happy with his limited playing time and left the team.
Another member of that German team, Jermaine Raffington, also was recruited to UNI by McDermott, but never enrolled there, and ended up at Southeastern Iowa junior college
Raffington signed with Butler out of Southeastern Iowa. He too faced penalties by the NCAA and was released
from Butler and returned to Germany to continue his pro career.

Oddly, one other kid who was in the same situation as Staiger, Polakovic, and Raffington, was Nemanja Calasan,
but Calasan (from Midland juco) committed to and signed with Purdue out of junior college, and when the NCAA checked out Calasan,
even though he also played on the same teams with professionals, just as Staiger & Polakovic did, just oddly.....
the NCAA found a reason to grant Calasan almost immediate eligibily.....could it be just a coincidence that Calasan
was treated differently because he was going to Purdue, and not a mid-major????

One other D-I head coach has actually been gone due to "Leave of Absence" since 11/11, and one of the assistants have been acting as head coach.
Jim Casciano of New Jersey Institute of technology was replaced by assistant Wendell Alexis for 12 games, and Alexis did not have a whole lot of D-I success.
NJIT is in its 2nd full year as D-I and the interim Alexis went 0-12, while last season, Casciano coached the team to a vastly better, 5-24.

I hope he sticks around past this year and next. USf games are just duds unless they are playing Gonzaga. I'm sure ES will be able to recruit and get USF to the next level which is the upper 1/2 of their conference. USF's arena is real small more like a large HS then a college arena. They did just get a large contribution to their atletic department and I wonder how much that had to do with bringing him in.

Pete...when asked by the press about his drinking issues, Sutton carefully chose his words and said he believed the problem was behind him.

As I carefully read that statement, I see a few words there that make me suspicious...
--does he just use the word "believe" because he wants to think the problem is behind him or is it really behind him?
--did he use the word "was" on purpose but avoid saying the problem "IS" behind him, and that it may have been behind him but has caught up to him.
--did he suggest that only the "problem" was behind him but that the drinking may still be there, and he just doesn't see it as a problem.

Either way, I guess if were at a USF game, I wouldn't light a match too close to him.

One thing in his favor here in SF is that you cab it more then drive at night and the five-0 are do not stop tomany people in the city, they'll wait until you hit the highways which ES should not have to touch. I just hope he is sober enough to coach.

San Francisco is an interesting place. It's certainly nothing like the places he's spent most of his time for the past few decades. He might have a hard time finding a watering hole with people of his liking.

On the contrary he will have no problem finding his like in watering holes in this city. There are plenty of people that he will find interesting from ex-politicians, rich VCs, ex- professional athaletes, characters beyond belief in establishments that will open their doors wide open for him. This would be a better place for Rick Majerus due to all the fine restraunts though.;)

I guess I did a poor job of finding local watering holes when I was out there for the Sweet 16. The concierge at our hotel could only refer us to the hotel bar (which was awful), and after stopping in briefly to a small hole-in-the wall, we finally find the BU crowd at a small irish place near the wharf. I guess I should talk to a local before I go out there again. ;)

.

They had you with all the other Tourons (tourist + mourons) unfortunately. You must have been put up by the Pier area (I bet Fiddler Greens was the bar).

The real action happens in the neighborhoods and USF is pretty much right in the midddle. In all honesty he will be treated and recieved quite well here. This is the land of misfits and with it's history of exceptance he will become an instant celebrity. Our current Mayor fessed up to a drinking problem after having an affair with the wife of one of his staffers and got re-elected a year after. I'm not saying I agree but it is just the way it is here. He could be in his element after all these years.

Eddie Sutton will go for his 800th win tonight against St. Marys.

But here is a little bit of controvery about his effort to reach 800 wins. Sutton actually only coached for 794 of his 799 wins. When he took a leave of absence 2 years ago at Oklahoma State after a DUI, his son took over and guided OSU to several more wins that season. However, in the case of an "interim coach" the NCAA allows the school to assign which coach gets credit for the victories. Oklahoma State decided to award the victories to Eddie Sutton, though he wasn't even present for them.---

fits with this guy's profile....

as I have said, numerous others have written that this is all about Eddie Sutton, not about San Francisco or college basketball or the kids...

Here's an odd statement....
Eddie Sutton wants to retire from basketball and become an addiction counsellor.

This story is somewhat reminiscent of the movie "Mr. 3000"
Even if Sutton gets 800, there will always be doubt, and possibly years later, those 5 wins will be taken away from him!!
Then will he make yet another comeback at age 85??

He's a strange guy! I saw the interview regarding what he wants to do and if genuine that's great. With all that said he has left USF holding the bag.

Eddie Sutton's team lost again last night to go 2-10 under Sutton,
but at least he won two that supposedly gets his career win total to 800 (even though he was on leave when 5 of those wins were accomplished)
It is entirely possible they may not win another game this year, although they do play Portland and Pepperdine each one more time, so they still might get a win.
