Don Nelson to return for one more season

TRIMAN is not my stepbrother, I have no stepbrother, I just happen to think he made some valid points. See Ya!

I was just joking!!!!! Having fun with what Mike said and little fun intended back at Triman! But thanks for telling me you like to read my posts and that you understand them!!!! I really enjoy reading and all the dialogue with everyone. Game time! See YA!!

Don't worry about it Out of Bounce. I think we all knew what you were saying. I don't think any of us made it to the final 8 in the National Spelling Bee.

Thanks Chico, I sort of figured everyone did. As for the final 8, I have read a lot of posts here! I'm just worried about Triman's brain! He was so detailed about correcting me. As for me its all good and its been fun, besides theres not much BU Basketball to talk about right now just waiting for the schedule to come out. You have a great summer!

Very will said Lakeview, I am with you on this one. Name me another mediocre coach that has been around in the NBA with these stats! You can't! Thats because if you are a mediocre in the NBA you are not around very long and 29 yrs. in my book is a long time no matter where you are! As for no championship, and the Hall of Fame calibre, there are meny coachs and players without championships in all sports that are in Hall of Fames. They don't keep you around because they like you and you are a fun guy to be around! Its all about MONEY! He puts teams on the floor, people in the stands and $ in the owner's pockets! END of Story!!

Let's see now. The NBA kept Bill Fitch around long enough to coach 2050 games, 1106 of which he lost. The kept Lenny Wilkins around to coach 2487 games, 1155 of which he lost. Dick Motta coached 1952 games, losing 1017. I could go on. At least Larry Brown has won a title with his .558 winning percentage of 1810 games.
Mediocre is what it is. "Of moderate or low excellence--ordinary"--Webster

I think what Lakeview is trying to get across is that it's hard to blame Don Nelson for POB's lack of success, so far, in the NBA. IMO, coaching records are misleading. Give a coach the talent and he will be a winner. I think even I could coach the Celtics this season.

Give a coach the talent and he will be a winner. ....

In some sense I both agree and disagree.........but Doug Collins had the same talent in Chicago that Phil Jackson had, but Jackson got the better play out of the team.
This kind of scenario is not just an oddity, as I think the coach does add something to the mix.

I didn't follow the NBA much until the Hawk started playing, so I'm not an expert on the Bulls situation, but I believe Jackson had better overall talent than Collins. Granted they both had MJ, but he was in his prime with Jackson. Phil seems to be a great coach again, now that the Lakers have better talent, namely Gasol and Fisher, added to their roster.

Saw him play in high school. He played on argueably Rock Island's all-time best team. They waltzed through their regular season, winning both conferences they were in. However, come sectional time they played Galesburg for the 3rd time. John Thiel was the coach. Galesburg held the ball (stalled) and upset them with a score in the low 20's. I do believe Rock Island had the best talent in the state that year.
Followed Don's career at Iowa. He was a great player for them. After his senior year, as was the custom in those days, the Iowa seniors went on a barnstorming tour to make a little money, playing anyone who would play them. I played on a industrial league team in the Quad-Cities and we played them. We guarded each other and I scored 26 on him. The only problem was he scored 44 on me.
I know Don and like and respect him very much. Most of my comments in this thread are of the "devil's advocate" variety, but it does dissappoint me that he hasn't gotten closer to a league championship after all those years.

Great story!!! One ? why did you let him score 44 on you? Was it that your D was that Bad or was it that he was that Good? The second is my guess.
I know all about Galesburg B ball and Coach Thiel. I was young when that stalled game was played. Not sure if that was about the time Bumpie Nixon and his bother played but have heard about that game meny times. Stalling was one of Coach T's tools (sometimes not a good one) and trade marks. Another trade mark was his softdrinks he always had with him on the bench (Jim B.and Coke). Had a chance to play ball for him. When I started H.S. he told me I had a choice to make Football or Basketball as you didn't play both if you wanted to play for him. I chose FB with plans to show him I could play both given a chance after FB. It never happened as I broke my arm just before the first varsity game. But I did go on to play 2 more yr.s of FB with Honor Mention All State my last yr. During my high yrs. we went to state twice in B ball. In 64 we got beat by the Cobden Apple Knockers (A school with about 70 students ,somewhere in IL and all the players were related) on Friday night and the next day someone hung a look alike of Coach T. in a tree in front of the GHS. The next yr. we got beat in the sweet 16 and then in my senior yr. with Dale Kelly (who later played at Northweastern) leading the way got beatby Thornton in the Champ. game at state. I played YMCA ball and next to Dale in Jr. high, great friend and person. Those were great yrs. in Galesburg with Coach T.'s teams!!!!!!!!!!
In more recent news my bothers boy was just named head Basketball Coach at Moline!! Watch for them to improve!! Also Galesburg's x coach form a couple yr.s. back ( got 2nd in the state with Joey Range playing), he then joined Coach Stalling staff at Vanderbelt and is now head coach in Rockford Il is marry to his sister. Its all in the family and about B Ball.
Oh by the way Coach T. never won a State Championship, better not call him mediocre to the people in The Burg!!

The Nixons came later. Seems like Galesburgs best player was a guy named Kimbrough. Those were great basketball times. Thiel vs Sherrill Hanks vs Dawdy Hawkins. Legends!! The coaches were as much of the story as the teams.

I think you are right. There were the Kimbrough brother's. One was Albert and I can't think of the others name. But both were good BB players for GHS and Coach T. Both went on to play pro. football. I think both played def. backs and I believe Albert played a couple yr.s for the Bears.
Galesburg, Quiney and Pekin and their coachs had a great meny yr.'s playing each other. A lot of stories! Just one for the road! Galesburg and Pekin were playing at Galesburg and the game and things were not going good for Coach T and GHS. So all of a sudden in the 3rd qrt. Coach T left the bench with his drink in hand and took a seat about 5 rows up in the stands with the Pekin fans and stayed there the rest of the qrt. The next day in the Galesburg paper he responded to the ? of why he did it? His reply was he just wanted to see if the officiating looked as bad there as it looked from his seat on the bench. True Story!

It's been a long time ago, but I think the other Kimbrough brother was Elbert. Does that sound right? I saw them play several games at Peoria Stadium and they were very good running backs.

You could be right. I will ask a couple of my friends the next time I'm in the Burg. I'll ask my dad tonight when I call him. Dads 86 but he may remember. He's a old silver streak. He earned 10 varsity letters at GHS, 3 each in football, basketball and track. The other one came 1 yr. when he doubled and was on Art Fish's swim team. Not meny do that anymore!
Oh by the way you and Onetuffshot are really showing how old you are. Just joking!! Thanks
