Darrington Hobson Commits to Pepperdine then RENEGS

tornado

New member
Darrington Hobson who plays now for Decatur Christian has committed to Pepperdine.
He was originally from California, but was said to have a lot of interest from much bigger schools like Iowa, DePaul, and Illinois, so this is a real puzzle.

Have you ever seen the Pepperdine campus and the associated scenery..not that big a puzzle for a kid originally from CA

How many kids pick a college because of "how pretty it is"?
If that were the case, then the most beautiful campus in the State of California should be able to produce better teams than they have recently.

Most kids dont pick a college because of that.......but in his case , being from CA originally and the fact that most colleges arent Pepperdine....well for me, its just not that big of a puzzle. I'm not looking for a fight, I'm just a new poster trying to pick my spots. Nice to be here.

I never would have gone to a class if I went to Pepperdine. The cliffs are amazing.

Pepperdine was a tough place for BU back in the 2003-04 season. They blew the late lead and Gilbert injuried his foot.

ya, the program is making a comback because kids want to play with his leadership. it kind of makes sense, however he is not aj mayo

I would encourage posters to check out Pepperdine from that link...It is a special place

Here's a surprise, even with a brand new head coach (Steve Alford), New Mexico is still trying to steal other school's players!

This thread is about a kid named Darrington Hobson, who was heavily recruited and labelled as a Top 100 player, and he finally committed to Pepperdine.
But Alford hired one of the Pepperdine assistants to work as assistant at New Mexico, and now they are trying to pry Hobson loose from his committment and get him to go to New Mexico.

WOW, I just lost so much respect for Alford, that really bothers me. Looks like hes in the same bag as Sampson now.

I find it odd that the newspaper would report that so matter of factly. Like there was no issue with recruiting a kid who had already verbally committed to another school.

Stealing other schools players is just a routine for New Mexico. Why should they think it's unusual?

Romar-
it apparently has become a standard way of recruiting for the so called big guys who don't believe they need to follow the same courtesies that everyone else follows.

I have heard from a very reliable source that at least one of the Bradley recruits that has yet to sign a LOI is still actively being recruited by other "big name" coaches.

I know, but I'm kinda on my ethics high-horse today and have been venting a little as to what I view as fair & unfair (see the LOI thread). It just seems to me that if you look away while someone is doing something wrong, you are just as guilty. The mere fact that this paper is reporting it without pointing out that it may be the wrong thing to do actually disturbed me a little. At least some media called out Sampson, although he still did it.

It's just a little tiresome that the NCAA lets some schools and coaches get by with their, "by any means necessary" attitudes, but will nail other schools for even the slightest transgretions.

Until a player signs his letter of intent he is fair game for everyone; no one said he has to answer any calls or messages from anyone but I do have a problem with schools trying to talk players into changing their mind after the letter has been signed or even contacting players like Granger who was already at Bradley ; there needs to be stiffer penalties so this does not happen.

I hear ya, and I was being a bit cynical...

But.....I can forsee the day when somehow, somewhere a mid-major will hotly pursue and recruit a kid that has already committed to a major school, and whattya wanna bet all he** will break loose.
The NCAA will change the LOI rules so a perceived lesser school can never do that again!

But if it is New Mexico taking away Pepperdine's player....so what? It's the same old same old that I've been pointing out in regards to rules violations. If you are a mid-major and if you don't have football, then you get nailed every time one of your coaches says "work harder" in the off season.

But if you are a biggie, and especially if you are a football school, then your players can live in $50,000 a year luxury apartments paid for by boosters and agents...and no investigation.
(as in Reggie Bush and Dwayne Jarrett)
http://www.bradleyfans.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=3725

And your players can get $10,000 non-repayable loans like Darnell Jackson did at Kansas, and you get less than the penalty BU gets when POB cashed an extra paycheck.

And how do you explain a violation like this one where the coach was actually housing, feeding, and clothing a player, and even giving her extra spending cash on the side, and the coach and school got ABSOLUTELY no penalties!
(of course they are BCS schools):
http://www.bradleyfans.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=4208

And here is the most massive and blatant NCAA scandal ever, and note the minor penalties (but of course it was a BCS school):
http://www.bradleyfans.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=3892

Another major violation with "Lack of Institutional Control" Cited
and yet only minimal penalties (but of course it was a BCS school):

I agree T, If the new coach at IlSU came out and was openly recruiting one of KU's recruits away from them, they would be burried so quickly the redbirds wouldn't know happened. The injustice against smaller programs is overwhelming, and yet the programs continually get better and better(at least in basketball).
