D2 coaches with d2 transfers

The talent at top D2 programs is not that much different than D1 mid-majors and below. There's a lot of talent out there so D2 schools get some of that, and if they have a good coach they can play with most D1s.

I would agree there are a lot of D2 schools that are far better than D1 schools. Drake found one and brought them in.

there are a lot of very talented players in all sports that understand they won’t be a professional athlete and choose a school based on academics, not the level or quality of sports program.

Are there D2 coaches that can coach at D1 level obviously yes, but please look at Mccollum’s resume. He is not just some D2 coach he won his conference the last 11 straight years (out of 15 years there) including 4 national titles. There are not a lot of Mccollums out there.

It doesn't always work out so well, in fact there are numerous examples of DII guys flopping
Green Bay hired TOP DII coaches two different times after Brian Wardle left and both were flops

LINC DARNER - was the top DII guy in the nation but was only moderately successful at UWGB & fired after 5 years

Will Ryan was even worse - fired after less than 3 years

Good point. And let’s see how successful McCollum is at D1 after Stirtz is gone. One incredible player can carry a team and Stirtz is that kind of guy.

McCollum is a good Xs and Os coach, for him it will always be about buy in. I think he's shown he can win with less talented players. Stirtz is good, but I would argue we've seen much more talented players in the Valley, he def plays the system well.

Agree with that, but take him out of Drakes lineup and how many games do they win? I don’t think many.

Without Stirtz Drake is not a top 4 team. Having a tall point guard that can shoot, dribble and pass the ball so effectively wins you a lot of games. I can"t remember the years but Jake Odom for Ind.St. was a similar type of player that led them to a lot of wins.I would think bigger schools will be offering a lot more money for Stirtz to transfer, then it comes down to loyalty.

I agree. McCollum will add pieces to this year's returning players and they will be very good next year if Stirtz returns.
They lose 3 of their starters- Mascari. Abreu, & Jackson

Adam Emmenecker showed in 2008 how a very good point guard even on a team with little other talent can still dominate

Good Xs and Os coaches can elevate teams. Do you remember when we played in des moines how many easy buckets they got on inbounds plays?

He had so much success at D2 that I think he will still succeed at D1. The gap between your average D1 team and the very top of D2 is a lot smaller than many people think. Coaching skills should transfer over, the recruiting is likely different though with the NIL being a factor.

My question is will he be at Drake next year? I kind of doubt it.
