The St. Louis Cardinals boosted their playoff chances a little by acquiring Matt Holliday from the Oakland Athletics for 3 minor league prospects-
The key player Oakland wanted was third baseman Brett Wallace, plus outfielder Shane Peterson and right-hander Clayton Mortensen.

Matt Holliday's career stats. He has underachieved a bit this year in his first season in the American League.
He was hitting .286 with 11 home runs and 54 RBIs in 346 at bats for Oakland this year.-

He's a gamer though and will be a great addition to their club house. I expect him to pick it up a bit with this trade. I'm not sure what they gave up for him but it was know one on their current roster which this time of year is good.

The trade value hinges on IF the cardinals can resign him. As of right now, he is a free agent at the end of the year. The three minor leaguers are all young upcomers and all are former high draft picks. The main player from the cardinals was Brett Wallace. He is a Jim Thome sized 3B and he is projected to have to switch to 1B or DH at sometime. He has the potential to be a phenomenal hitter, but in reality didnt have much of a future at St. Louis thanks to Albert. He was the top asset wanted in both the trade talks for Holliday and Halladay.

Like I said, if Holliday is extended at the end of the year, the trade is a great one, but thats what it hinges on.

I don't understand why people keep saying that it only will be good if he resigns. Usually the ppl saying that aren't the ones also giving your argument about how we dont need Brett Wallace. Those that know the cardinals had no legitimate need of Wallace should think this is an excellent move. It only costs us 4.5 million dollars for this "rental". That could be easily obtained in one playoff series....we finally have a hitter that can hopefully bolster others to be consistent hitters. We have enough good prospects in the minor leagues to absorb this trade and if he leaves next year we'll still be fine bringing up basically free production from a minor leaguer. This also keeps Pujols happy and hopefully mends a deteriorating relationship between the FO and TLR/Duncan.

This is exactly what the cardinals needed...not pitching...the pitching looks so bad bcuz they have no run support. It's up to TLR now..he has all the pieces and its time to put up or shut up. How can you not be a favorite in the NL with a lineup consisting of Rasmus, De Rosa, Ludwick, Pujols, Holliday, Schumaker, and even Molina to some extent. Those are 7 hard outs. They have 2 starting pitchers that could be aces for any other team and Piniero who is extremely solid and Lohse looks like he's getting better. There is no reason to not reach the playoffs and to contend for the penant....I have to admit I'd be a little upset if they don't make the W.S. with this lineup..

You are right, I never saw Wallace doing anything for us in the Bigs. However, he is our top rated prospect and his asking price was through the roof. He could have been used as trade bait for quite a host of players. I'm looking at from a business stand point in regards that he could have been used to get a guy of this caliber on a longer-term basis.

And don't get me wrong, I am absolutely thrilled we got Holliday. I have wanted this guy since the beginning of the year and I hope he stays around.

Now I heard a rumor today that Holliday was picked up so we could trade Rasmus and prospects for Halliday. As i have been in work all day, I have heard very little about the trade and am wondering if this is even remotely possible.

Mo just spoke on FSMW and said they are absolutely done moving players unless there is a "glaring hole." Although you know as well as I that these people never show their hands until the deal is done.

This trade reminds me of the year they picked up Walker from Colorado. Card fans have to hope it works out the same way.

Exactly! Let's hope so Cardinal nation! :D

All he's done in his first day as a Cardinal.......

Reached on an infield single....stole second....and scored the only run so far in a big game in Philadelphia!

Don't forget about Lugo. He went 4-5 with a triple and a homerun in the 8-1 victory!

Big stretch of games here for the Cards against the other two division leaders......3 in Philadelphia and then 4 at home against the Dodgers. So far, so good.

don't get too excited card fans- same thing happened in atlanta with teixeira. holliday will be gone in about 3 months....enjoy the rental

It's not REALLY costing that much though and he's in STL as long as he's there. It could turn into a Larry Walker-type "rental". I'll take that!

Holliday is a stud and he loves the game! It would not shock me to see him stay in St Louis one of the true real baseball towns with great fans. BTW...I'm not a Cards fan.
