BU recruit- class of 2013- Marquis Pryor

One-time Bradley recruit Marquise Pryor was finally released from jail 2 days ago (Friday, Feb. 22) after serving over 4 months for a gun possession charge, and his high school coach says he'll return to the Chicago Orr High School team immediately, and even be in the starting lineup for their next game!
Their next game is in the state playoffs in their Class 3A sectional.

wow - if any of my kids had even forgotten to wear a tie on a game day that would have been excuse enough to bench then & not play them

I know - the kid had some troubles but then so do a couple of our other current recruits....can a kid not pay his debt and be forgiven?
Sorry too easy.;)

I really don't think I would let him play right away unless he had a really believable story as to what happened.

My question has to do with illegibility, grades, classroom performance? Do these things have any barring on playing ball in Chicago?

well - the state regulations as well as the Chicago Public League rules would prohibit him from playing if he's academically ineligible..
but lots of kids keep up with their schoolwork while they are out of school by doing it at home or with a tutor...

all the rest of the rules -- from making it to practice, staying out of trouble with athletic code, and whether he dresses properly on game day are all SCHOOL rules so that I guess the school can say he's compliant if they want to...

Reminds me of when Kansas' Darrell Arthur was found to have had many of his tests scores and grades altered and fraudulently changed so that he'd appear eligibile...
..but that the school didn't want the scandal and literally whitewashed it to avoid the publicity and keep their trophies (they had won the 2005 Texas State Championship)...

His high school undertook a "thorough investigation" only to claim a few weeks later that everything was OK and that he was eligible anyway...

Even then - when the high school was ridiculed in the press for the moronic way they handled this - they "reopened the investigation" admitting there were too many questions unanswered and too much fraud - then...
they quietly closed it again without any comment!!

The IHSA has stepped in on the Marquise Pryor situation and ruled him ineligible while they review his academic standing, despite the fact that his school, Chicago Orr HS, says he completed coursework while in bootcamp and is on track to graduate and thus is eligible in their eyes.

Orr HS won their game last night and plays again Friday night. The school is expecting a final ruling by Friday that would allow Pryor to play.

this is a bizarre story -- I have never heard of the IHSA stepping in because of..
"an inquiry from the Tribune regarding Pryor's eligibility"

"The IHSA said it was unaware of the situation until receiving an inquiry from the Tribune
regarding Pryor's eligibility earlier this week, according to IHSA assistant executive director Matt Troha
."

It would be totally different if someone at IHSA observed apparent violations or if opposing coaches requested IHSA get involved - but to step in because the Tribune asked is a really bizarre move by IHSA...

Could this be a little payback for this incident in 2011 where IHSA saw fit to ban Orr from the IHSA State Playoffs for a petty reason,
but upon appeal and threat of lawsuit - Orr was reinstated?
They ended up winning their regional.

I know he missed quite a bit of time his Sr year, but was he a qualifier out of high school? or would he need his associates degree to transfer?

I think he missed too much schoolwork. It was what caused him to be declared ineligible by the IHSA. I suspect he is not a qualifier, and will need to spend 2 years at juco.
