BU Enrollment Declines??

Declines in enrollment have been blamed as the primary reason for Bradleys financial problems with major $$ losses in the Athletic Department virtually ignored. However, it's interesting to note that enrollments are up at Monmouth College, Ill. State, and most recently at Southern Ill. Univ.

wiz - virtually all the other colleges in Illinois are reporting big increases in enrollment as are schools in nearby states or just beyond our borders....many of them are private schools with tuition higher than Bradley...
I don't doubt enrollment is down many places, but if SO MANY schools near us are seeing not just increases but RECORD INCREASES,
then there's no sense using the argument that the problem is the vague unfixable argument of "enrollment is down everywhere"
because clearly it IS NOT!

BU Enrollment Declines?

BU Enrollment Declines?

The PJS needs to wake up, get off the dime, and start acting like journalists again. The Bradley financial situation, its causes, and its very likely result is a major local story that needs to be aired out and reported to the public in a complete and accurate manner.
Thousands of Central Illinois people and people all across our state have ties to Bradley and the University has been a part of their lives and our community for many years. For our local newspaper to completely ignore what is happening at Bradley, and why, and its ramifications especially the possible loss of BU Divn. I athletics is unbelievable.
Phil Luciano, where are you?

Are any of those mentioned private universities? Are their tuitions as high? I would think those could be some factors involved.

I understand we're 6 years into a recession but....many if not most families would clearly realize that it is even more urgent NOW than ever before that their kids get a college degree if they want to compete in the job market.
So people are making an effort despite the economic hardships to get to college.

as I posted elsewhere - college enrollments are NOT declining everywhere - this is a misstatement -
the growth of college enrollment is slowing down but overall enrollment is mostly up and is expected to continue upward nationally for at least another decade

Missouri State's President also issued a statement of

Eight Major Goals for 2014-15

...one of which is purely a comment on athletic goals...

VII. Athletics

1. Vie for a football playoff berth.
2. Finish in the top three in the MVC All-Sports standings.
3. Increase memberships in The Bears Fund, and increase ticket sales in football, men’s basketball, and women’s basketball.
4. Collaborate with students and Learfield Sports to improve the overall game day experience.
5. Comply fully with NCAA rules with no major violations.
6. Maintain an NCAA Academic Progress Rate above 930 for all teams.
7. Successfully implement the MVC television and digital media initiative.
8. Increase cumulative volunteer hours performed by student-athletes from 2,000 to 2,500.
9. Evaluate new NCAA legislation and create and implement an appropriate strategic response.

Do you think something is wrong at Bradley?

That seems to be what the Board of Trustees has determined.

BTW- I just talked to one of my professors who taught me when I was at Bradley. He is still involved in teaching, as are several of my old professors. They have all told me the same thing. I suggest anyone who doesn't understand what the problem is, please talk to a professor or anyone on the academic side.

This.....

... but overall enrollment is mostly up and is expected to continue upward nationally for at least another decade...

again this year for fall of 2015 - many colleges are reporting RECORD increases in students applying for enrollment...
..sure some colleges see a slight decline, but overall enrollment declines are NOT the broad norm despite what has been said about Bradley's striking 20% drop

Guess who leads the pack in breaking records in students applying?...

UC Davis reports an all time record number of applications from new entry students -
over 80,000 kids are trying to get in - their enrollment in their incoming freshman class is generally in the 6,000-8,000 range - so they should have no trouble filling as many slots as they want this year!

Just read an article that might be a big future impact for Bradley...

recall the President just made a speech promising FREE college to anyone who wants it...
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/john-hope-bryant/obamas-proposal-for-free-_b_6533436.html

well, it's always hard to know exactly what's gonna happen...especially since someone has to pay for this and the Federal government is already almost $20 trillion in debt.

..but if suddenly people have FREE college for 2, or 3 or 4 years - dontcha think it might siphon off a few people who'd rather take the FREE route than pay tuition - especially fairly high private school tuition?

Of course it will - thus this latest politically motivated giveaway proposal might hurt schools like Bradley quite severely..and 4-year schools are beginning to worry about it...
Here's an article about a number of 4-year colleges who would fear an enrollment drop caused by such a free-college plan might destroy them..
