Bradley ranked as 11th out of 263 midmajors over past 6 years

At least when it doesn't support your opinion ;)

I just don't take much from articles like this.....

We had a great run at the end of 2006 and we haven't had a disaster year(which AS said)...we have been slightly better than middle of the pack in the MVC.....

I'm not much into the math stuff:)

I guess this is a good thing.

I guess I would ask this....

Would you rather be #11 in this poll or have 2 or 3 more MVC titles (either regular season or tourney)???

I am going to try and not jump in the arguing in this thread. I still think people are in one camp or the other and this ranking won't change much.

You either are happy or you are not happy about where BU has been the past 3 or 4 years.

Right now I am more concerned about how BU will be this year.

And that's what really matters.....

Amen! No one is going to change their mind. We could start the year 15-0 and some people would still complain, or we could start 0-15 and some people would still rationalize. It's a waste of time.

I think #11 on this list is fantastic and I hope we can use it as a recruiting tool.

Or you could look at it as, if we had those titles we might be #1 or #2 on this list, which would be even better.

I'm a bit of a stats/numbers nerd and see some things I would consider flaws in the rankings (recognizing these were reader-submitted categories).

For instance:
  • I wouldn't weight all NCAA wins the same. Winning a first round game isn't the same as an Elite Eight win, IMO.
  • All "Red Line" upsets are not equal. Beating the bottom-feeders is not the same as beating Kansas.
  • 20-win seasons aren't equal across conferences and probably isn't the magic number it once was since the NCAA started counting contests differently, allowing for more games per year.

All of that said, these are fun exercises and I don't have any real issues with the categories - just the valuation of some.

I would also note that it would take significantly more time to add in the factors I mentioned and probably isn't worth the time to make a list like this anyway.

I also appreciate the work the Welliston does for Mid-majors and the time it takes to operate a site like he does.

How many years have to go by without a MVC Conference/Conference Tournament title, or a 20 win regular season, before BU Fanatics aren't content anymore with just the two 2005-06 NCAA victories and the two XYZ Tournament Seasons?

Is being 11 out of 263 MM over the past 6 years going to pack the place and generate $$ for BU Athletics?

I can't see BU hanging a banner in the PCC or the Renaissance Arena proclaiming "BU MBB: 11/263 Mid Majors Since 2004!"

Nice try- again anyone trying to denounce Bradley seems to like to exaggerate the negatives, or demean anything positive.

The only point I made was that it is hard to call Bradley mediocre when there are substantial postives in the program over the last 6 years. Enough to rank better than all but 10 other midmajor programs (out of 273 schools) during that time according to this objective evaluation by Midmajority.com.

Nobody said this was banner-worthy.

My preference is we get an MVC title and make a run in the NCAA and move up in next years ranking... ;-)

I'm hoping no more years go by without them (MVC Conference with MVC/NCAA tournament titles as well). If Bulter can be one shot away from winning it all, what's to stop Bradley?

Good luck DC - after you finish this could you take on the Injuries vs. Excuses debate... then Religion & Politics. :?:

This is the most comprehensive, detailed, and objective ranking of midmajor schools' success I have seen. So for Bradley to be ranked so highly does point to a degree of consistent success that the program has had in recent years. It might be a little deflating for those fans who like to repeat the mantra of mediocrity every time they post about Bradley. 11th out of 263 teams, and ranked higher than Creighton, Wichita State, Missouri State, ISU, and SIU is not mediocre.

DC, YOU start the debate with your assertion this study justifies all the pro JL folks' position about BU's success and how this "scientific" poll should deflate fans who don't agree with your opinion about BU's recent success and lack of mediocracy in the program. You couldn't just report the facts about the poll and let the information speak for itself. You editorialized.

Then when someone dares to disagree with your editorial, you turn it into a mud slinging about people trying to DENOUNCE Bradley and EXAGGERATE THE NEGATIVES and DEMEAN ANYTHING POSITIVE.

I am trying to find something in my post that denounces Bradley, or that exaggerates the negatives (their record is public knowledge as is their successes under JL), or, that demeans EVERYTHING positive about BU's MBB...

If some want to wave the banner about the results of this analysis fine, it is an interesting statistic, but relies on the authors' view of what is important and how much weight each factor is given.

My opinion is I don't think it is the end all of how the JL era will be measured and I doubt it will be waved around by the Atheltic Dept or University when trying to recruit top bb players. Just my opinion.

I have celebrated BU successes under JL, and will continue to. I remember with great fondness cheering the team on at the PIA Airport. I look forward to each new MBB season with hope. That doesn't mean I can't voice an opinion that I'd like to see BU achieve more success than they have under JL.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion. For every post from someone who thinks as I do, there are 5-10X as many posts of people with opposite opinions who wax poetic about the program under JL. No mudslinging from me to those who have those opinions....If the Forum will not allow any opinions vs the status quo at BU, I'll just jump in line.

I disagree with your first point. I do agree with the second one though.

I agree its VERY easy to call the program mediocre.....I see alot of BU fans like you do JD and the VAST majority rate BU that way. THATS a fact Jack....so why this poll is fun the REAL scientists or the true scientific facts come from those who see, hear and live BU hoops on a daily basis.
