Back from the Red - White Scrimmage

I simply refuse to make any type of blanket judgement on this team based on what tonight was...1 ten minute half, a second ten minute half with a running clock and 3 and a half minutes of situational sets...
Here's what I saw...
From the returning guys...
- Ruffin is an absolute monster, plain and simple.
- Crouch looked fine...appeared to be fully healthy...knocked down a couple threes...I don't have any concerns about him.
- Salley looked bigger and stronger to me this year...he hit a shot or two...he looked fine to me.
- Warren didn't shoot well. It happens.
- Singh ran the floor a bit better than he did last year...I think he will be much more capable of giving us 5 to 8 decent minutes per game in the post this year.

From the new guys. And I will say that overall, as a group, these guys didn't impress much in terms of the box score...but these are impressive, impressive, athletic guys....all of them...and I am not going to label any of these guys based on their performance in less than half of an actual game of action tonight. They will become what they will become, but I will not grade them based on a scrimmage where Saihou Jassey was the unquestioned 'can't miss kid' from last year's Red-White game.

Sam M. - had a tough assignement tonight as it seemed that Ruffin or Cole-Scott were pressuring him everywhere he went on the floor...but he looked like he handled it as well as could be expected...I thought he looked really good once he was running the point for the '2nd string' in the last half of the scrimmage. He hit a three and had a couple of other hoops.

Cole-Scott - quick, quick, quick. He will be fine. If he and Ruffin are on the court at the same time, they will simply terrorize the guards from other teams.

To me, all of the new big guys really didn't stand out in the game action...but these are all impressive athletes. Collins, Egolf, Thompson, Wilson (more of a wing...not really a big...)and Austin certainly looked the part...they ran the floor well, they jumped well, and had an unbelievable amount of athleticism...so I am very excited about their potential. It just didn't seem to me that there were many plays being run for the post players in this limited scrimmage. It was a sloppy game that the defense dominated...so I'll give these guys an incomplete and wait until I can see them play 15 minutes or so in some of these exhibition games before proclaiming that someone 'looks lost' or 'certainly won't contribute much of anything this year'...

It was a good time, and I was happy to be able to put names to faces...It wasn't great basketball, but so what. 7 scholarship players that have never played a minute in D-I....I think it would be crazy for us to assume that they would have come out tonight and looked like world beaters.

We need 3 or 4 of these new guys to get ahead of the curve and contribute this year...and I am confident that will happen...who those 3 or 4 guys will be, I don't know...after the St. Ambrose and Quincy games, I think we will have a better idea.

Patience, Daniel-san. This will be a deep, talented team by the time the meaningful games roll around.

Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes. Perfect assessment. Couldn't have said it better.

I wish someone would tell the players that fans are most impressed with dunks that show hang-time, "grace" and/or power. (i.e free-throw line, jumping over someone, windmils, or rim-shaking power type dunks..) Degree of difficulty with touch and release neven wins many fan points...

Found it kinda odd, that Jim Les still said nothing about Cameron, despite giviing every other player at least one personality sentance during the intro...

Will Egolf was an offensive-only sub on the red teams "offence/defence" during the end of game siituations...

Philips was an offensive force?

DR, Crouch, and Salley are absolute starters. I could see adding Theron and Warren. Since Collins did not win the opening tip (vs Will), nor hugely impress, I do not believe he would be an immediate starter. (POB always won the tip)

first off, i love that shaunguth kept the minutes for each player! that's pretty funny. you actually made a good point with it though.

i thought the refs called a lot of fouls.

they all played tough defense.

salley has good moves now and is a presence inside.

tcs is fast and definitely a little slasher.

i was disappointed that warren didn't bring his excitement and enthusiasm from off the court to the game. he didn't seem to be there on offense.

i wanted to see theron wilson drive to the basket a few times but he never did. like warren, he wasn't there on the offensive side.

i was impressed with wilson's defense. he consistently guarded bigger guys, mostly egolf, and did fine. i think he will be a valuable piece to the team in that respect.

obviously the walk-ons played too much for a realistic game but it is a scrimmage for the fans to see the team so they had to play them. i had no problem with that.

i agree also that the coaches should have gotten an introduction. thinking back about it, i'm shocked that les didn't do that. i wouldn't be surprised if he forgot or something because it's hard to believe they didn't plan that.

Lavin impressed me....I'm sure he won't be playing a whole lot barring injury, but its good to know that we have someone like that in case something bad happens. He went 2-2 from 3pt range and looked good handling the ball...he looked like he belonged out there.

I was not impressed by our team at the scrimmage tonight as we did not shoot the ball very well and had very little post play; but I also realize that they probably practiced earlier and the multiple subs we used made it hard for the players to get any kind of offensive flow going; it looks as though we may be playing two forwards along with 3 guards to start the season as our bigger players have more work to catch up with our guards; I believe that we will be able to tell more about this team after the St.Ambrose and Quincy games as it should give all of the new players a little more time to get the system down, if we are going to have any chance to win the league championship and beat a team like Mich.St. we need to have a true center as we cannot rebound or even defend those teams without one; looking forward to thurs. night as it will be a real game.

From all the reports here I'm going to conclude this. Red vs. White was similar to the Valley last year. We beat the hell out of each other because we were all good and it looked bad to the external attention.

It's a little early...so we won't do a pick-em, but what do people think will be the attendance at the Red-White game with such a highly anticipated group of incoming players?

I'll make an early projection.......3750 on a cold rainy night!

:-o WHOA! 3,782 on a cool rainy night! :-o

Well, finally tornado got something right!:D

Again, I have uploaded some pictures of the spaghetti supper and some video clips of the game and dunk contest for viewing.

If anyone would like to see them, please send me a PM. They won't be posted for open viewing.

I wasn't at the game, but I'm glad most people are taking the wait and see approach until a real game. Let's say everyone is making their shots, this board could easily turn to "omg we have no defense or hustle."

:)

Everyone makes some good points. I guess the comment that got me the most was if we would have been draining a bunch of threes we would have been "OMG no defense". You could be right.

I was just disappointed in the post play. Maybe moreso that we didn't look to pound it inside. I guess in a scrimmage like this its hard to get a real feel so I too look forward to more gametime scenarios like this coming thursday.

Nice recap....I feel better. Sounds like most people (the ones that count) saw more good than I did and saw it for what it was. Like I stated I'm a bad judge at these events and just told it as I saw it.
Looking for midseason form in the first simulated game is not fair......

Can't wait until Thursday. I'll just shut up and watch. :)

T . . . Jitters and whatnot aside, did you come away with any impressions about JL's assertion that this is his most talented team at BU?

Yikes. Sounds like the hype was wrong.

wait a minute............
The players spent all evening doing PR work, signing autographs, and eating spaghetti, then had to stand around while the womens' game went way, way, way long because of all the stinking time-outs being called, then waited further for the introductions, dance routines, and jokes, then the players got a grand total of about 5 minutes to warm up, shooting ONLY a few layups during the warmups.

Then they were subbed in and out like lightning, nobody spent more than a couple minutes straight on the floor except DRuff, and a full quarter of the players out there were the walk-ons, plus each player was teamed on the floor with others that once the regular season starts, they'll never be teamed together on the floor at the same time (like Phillips and Thornton in the starting lineup with Crouch!!)
So all the comments about them not looking too impressive are fair comments...but with an asterisk.
Nobody there can doubt the fitness, athleticism, skills, and abilities of the main 6-8 players who are going to be our horses in the Valley race.

I can't believe all the fans can really expect every shot to go in! The kids were NOT given adequate chance to go through their pregame warm-ups, and all those other factors played a part, too.

very unimpressed.... besides salley i dont see a big guy that can contribute ...

again....really??
In what was likely only 8-9 minutes of play in a NON-starting role last night, Sam Singh had
NINE points and 7 rebounds, Austin posted up nicely a couple times, Collins had NINE rebounds,
and nobody really had many turnovers.....Ruffin leading in turnovers with 3, but Wilson, Egolf, and Austin had zero,
turnovers and Salley and Thompson each had only one.

This has been a great thread for those of us who could not attend in person. Sounds like the team is in good shape at this point -- deep, better rebounding, outstanding guard play ... Nothing I've read concerns me. The team always has a little rust on the valves in the red-white - but JL will have them polished for game 1 as DePaul found out for the last few years.

I was expecting to watch the film on bubraves.com this morning, but it wasn't taped as it has been in last years. That is inexecusable. Fans outside the Peoria-area rely upon this - very disappointing.

......... 7 newcomers .

NINE newcomers
Maniscalco, Egolf, Thompson, Collins, Austin, Wilson, Cole-Scott, Thornton, Sweatman.

shaunguth, that 3782 certainly looks like it was an attempt to get an accurate count maybe from the ticket sales, but I am certain there were a bunch of fans who were not counted. By the time the womens game dragged way longer to almost 7:45PM, and then the mens game got started, they were no longer even taking tickets, and the lobby doors were opened.
BUT-- there were still people arriving -- I saw plenty, maybe having to walk several blocks and spending extra time looking for parking, or maybe just coming quite late just to watch some of the mens game only.
My own personal estimate as I stood in the Fieldhouse lobby at the mens' halftime (around 8:10PM), was that a minimum of several dozen and maybe even a couple hundred people went uncounted by the ticket sales totals,
which means the real count would indeed be over 4000.
Regardless, I really don't recall making that post, but I am glad you found it, shaunguth.
