Appalling grenade?

Again, he only stated an opinion. I think it's likely JL could be fired at the end of the season. Did I just create a rumor?

But he didn't back that up with proof. And you don't know either Disturbed if it's "likely" JL could be fired either. Until we hear something from the AD and/or JG there has not been one iota of indication that he would be fired. Granted someone could call an impromptu press conference tomorrow morning to say he will be fired, but until we hear some legitimate leaks that something may be up, there is no reason to speculate about his future AND to try to pass it off as fact.

I think for those who feel he could be fired this year, the better way to say it would be "I think there is a pretty decent chance he could be fired, but this is not based on any factual information. Just one person's honest opinion."

I would have had no problem if KW had said this, though I still would have disagreed with him based on his dislike for the guy. But at least I wouldn't have held him to bad journalism if he had made himself clear.

Why would he have to say "in my opinion?" His pieces are all opinion pieces. He's not the beat writer.

I still disagree. If I were a columnist I can't just go around saying that, for example that there is a high likelihood that President Obama will be impeached sometime this week, at least not without some strong evidence that it could happen. And while I'm sure there may be a few people who want him impeached, that's a lot different than saying that "he will probably be impeached within 20 days."

Do you see where I'm going with this?

Seriously, I have zero idea whether he will be fired or not. It is my opinion. I never tried to pass anything off as fact, and never said anything close to that. I'm pretty sure the words "likely" and "could" eliminate the phrase as being factual.

Do you not think the past nine years, and especially this year, provide some strong evidence that he could be fired? Otherwise this thread wouldn't even exist. At programs of the stature of BU's coaches get fired for performance similar to JL's every year. There's plenty of evidence for KW to opine what he has.

I grabbed the first one that I think KW has failed on several times:

I believe that clear thinking, clear statement, accuracy and fairness are fundamental to good journalism.

If JL is gone in 20 days, then I will issue an apology to KW on this board. If JL is still the coach for next year, then I think KW should do the honorable thing and resign. I'm not simply sticking up for JL as I have had my fill of his small ball player rotation ... but that doesn't mean I support what I think is hatchet journalism.

I thought he was getting offered a buyout? Why should he resign?

Really? name another D1 coach who was fired after 5 winning seasons in a row, 100+ wins over 5 seasons, stellar team graduation and academic performance, high ethical standards, and no team legal issues for years, and one single poor season associated with the loss of 2 star players for the entire season? In fact name a coach fired for anything close to that.

And please don't use the Barry Hinson example again.

I think some of you are trying to intimidate kirk from writing anything else....

Thats not right! We have freedom of the press.

We have freedom of speech here, too. Are you trying to intimidate me from further opinions?

Thanks! We agree on something! :)

Besides, how is it possible to intimidate a newspaper writer? They buy ink by the barrell...

I am more focused on the 4 games in 4 days.

Do you guys think we can do that? Its pretty taxing to say the least

So far, we've won 3 out of 16 MVC games. That tells me that winning 4 out of 4 will be next to impossible.

But then again DePaul won tonight, and the chances of them ever winning once in the Big East, especially on the road, are next to impossible. So maybe there is hope.

Exactly! If he's intimidated he needs to find a new line of work. Trust me, he's not intimidated. I actually think he's loving this. It validates him.

Seriously - guys get fired for being 9-18 pretty regularly, especially in year 9. And you neglected to point out that during the 100+ wins in five seasons that they also lost 70 games in the same stretch. Over the past four seasons he is now 67-65. He is now 150-139 career with no conference championships. High ethical standards? Gimme a break. NCAA basketball is big business and is "what have you done for me lately." And I never used the Barry Hinson example ever.

So are there any examples of a coach winning 100+ games over 5 seasons, then getting fired for having 1 losing season due to major injury issues?

I realize we haven't won enough. Every fan wants their team to win. But it is not always the best solution to blow things up and rebuild from scratch with an unproven entity.

Da Coach..No playing around here..

Look at the game notes. JL is 18 games under .500 in January. Almost all of those are league games.. Thats a .393 percentage in the first month of league play.

Thats why many of us think its time to rebuild. Because we have no confidence it will change.

You think otherwise...Thats perfectly fine..But I think that note alone, specifies to me why a change is needed

Those seasons you speak of, and including this one, are now 111-88. I'm not going to leaf through the NCAA record books, but I'm sure guys have been fired for these kinds of numbers. Secondly, most coaches at BU's level don't get to stay around for long stretches when they win at a .56 clip with no conference championships.

Plus - why would the next hire be an unproven entity? You know as well as I do that BU's coaching job is a very good job at the mid major level and there will be many good candidates. JL could be considered the most unproven entity of all time as far as BU coaches go when he was hired.

Regardless of who any college hires, they are unproven until they actually win there. Just because a coach won at some lower level, it doesn't mean they will be successful at the next level. For every case where you can name a successful new D1 hire, I can name unsuccessful ones. People who are asking for a new coach seem often to assume the new coach would automatically be a winner. It doesn't happen that way.

But is your current coach truly a winner when he's only won 52% of his games and not won a conference regular season or tournament title? Outside of the Sweet 16 run, my opinion is that JL hasn't really been successful. I truly respect this website and very much enjoy the discussion that goes on here every day. I respect the passion that you and Tornado have for BU basketball. I think we just differ on how we think it's going to get better, and I know everyone here wants that.
