Another possible round of conference changes

The Big East isn't expanding. No member schools want it, there are no immediate candidates, and given like like year where it finished 2nd in conference RPI and got 60% in....it's just not necessary. The Big East will stay at 10 as far out as can been seen and probably quite longer

The Sun Belt meets Tuesday to decide on expansion...

and the two most likely candidates for the new addition are either ...
Coastal Carolina - currently one of the better teams in the Big South...&
Eastern Kentucky - one of the better teams in the Ohio Valley Conference

The strong rumor is that The Sun Belt Conference will add Coastal Carolina from the Big South when they meet today,
This article comments on what can happen when mid-major conferences like the Big South try to focus too much on football-

The Sun Belt meets Tuesday to decide on expansion -

One team that was hoping to be considered is New Mexico State - who are still in the WAC - even tho all the other solid WAC teams have left and realigned elsewhere.
If you look at who is left in the WAC - I don't blame NMSU for desperately wanting out.
They are the only WAC team with an RPI better than 279...

New Mexico State was a member of the Sun Belt for basketball from 2000-2006, and they are an affiliated member for football, and that seems like a much better place for them. Now that there aren't any good teams left in the WAC in basketball, and they don't play football, I suspect NMSU would jump at the chance to get back in the Sun Belt Conference.

There has been many rumors as to if and who the Big XXII will add. Obviously the school or schools that are added to the league, will be added for three reasons. Football, television and potential rivalries. Schools such as Memphis, Cincinnati, Central Florida, East Carolina would be nice additions from a football standpoint but horrible from a football television ratings standpoint. Memphis and Cincinnati would have not chance competing for regional viewing with Alabama, Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi, Mississippi State and maybe even Louisville. Central Florida would have no chance for television ratings against Florida, Florida State and Miami. The same goes for East Carolina as they would compete against South Carolina, Clemson, North Carolina and others.

If the Big XXII expands, I would expect them to look to Houston, Rice, SMU, Tulsa or maybe westward or possibly to the east coast. It will boil down to whoever won't have to compete for television ratings with other schools in their region.

This was drawn up as a whim by a sportswriter from the Sun Herald. The only response to the article was from an athletic director, that the was disappointed his school was left off the sportswriter's dreamed up new conference.

This doesn't surprise me. It was more important that the Big XII went to a post season conference football playoff. Having an opportunity to play in the four team BCS National Playoff, got better when they added the conference playoff game. Now each of the Big 5 Power Conferences (SEC, Big 10, ACC, Pac 12 and Big XII) have post season football playoffs and will be fighting to be one of the four teams selected. There were no teams currently available to add financial value to the Big XII by being added to the league. When the "Big Boys" look to expand, they not only add teams. More importantly they buy up markets.

Houston, Rice and SMU use to be in the Southwest Conference, before the name was changed to the Big XII. Those would be the three most natural addition. Adding a school like Central Florida would shock me, as the Big XII will not want to compete in the same media market as Florida, FSU and Miami.

Houston would be difficult for the Big XII to pass up on. It is the fifth largest television and media market in the country and has multiple teams within its athletic department. Once again, it is all about the money. That is why Texas A&M, Missouri and even Arkansas left the conference to join the more lucrative SEC.

that might have an interest in joining the conference."
