Ahmad Starks to come home

According to the paper Starks cited Illinois and Bradley as two of the possible locations. As a junior Starks averaged 10.4 points, 2.3 assists and 1.4 turnovers per contest for an Oregon State team that struggled mightily in Pac-12 play.
 
As a recruiting guy, wouldnt you typically (take our BU Kool Aid out of this) assume that U of I over BU is an "easy" choice? They all know kids like big offers and a guy doing well in the PAC12 wouldn't typically look to go mid-major. Unless he sees problems with the U of I situation (he should), and recognizes he could be a star at BU and make a major impact (he would).

I like Poneman, but he's playing the odds by suggesting Illinois.

I wouldn't underestimate the connection with Chin and Geno's salesmanship. And the opportunity here. Just my thoughts...

Sorry, I'm a bit confused.
Is Starks a 'red shirt junior', hence actually entering his 5th year and already eligible to play per NCAA transfer rules?

Or is Starks a junior(as the article states)- but somehow already approved by the NCAA to play immediately (hardship ruling)?

Or is everyone assuming that an 'immediately able to play' will be 'rubber stamped' by the NCAA because he is moving closer to home-re illness of Grandmother?

If Starks has yet to be granted a waiver by the NCAA, it appears that he will pick a school prior to any NCAA ruling on his status.

Would Illinois be interested in Starks if there was any chance whatsoever that he has to sit out a year as a transfer?

I hope the above isn't too convoluted.........

He graduated from Chicago Whitney Young HS in 2010. He is currently a junior at Oregon State, played 3 seasons, and has never redshirted. So if he transfers, he would normally have to sit out a year, unless he receives a waiver from the NCAA. Because he claims his transfer is motivated by family needs, there is a chance the NCAA would allow such a waiver.

I have seen talk of him leaving Oregon State & transferring as far back as a year ago - and it was even mentioned here last fall...

I think he's a little unhappy at times playing there...even tho he's a good offensive player...
but he's inconsistent, very short (5-8 ) and has difficulty defending and he just doesn't like playing in a system that never seems to win...
he often takes a lot of shots to get his points - one of those guys who'll take 10 shots to get 8 pts - and he doesn't get many assists...
near the end of the season as Craig Robinson's Oregon State Beavers hit a real skid and lost 15 of their last 19 games - his playing time really shrunk and he lost his starting spot.

I think he sees the writing on the wall... and I don't think he will help a lot of teams who think he is a point guard
 
He is also more of a shooting guard, and not a point guard. He averages only about 2 assists per game for his career. I'm not sure how many coaches want a 5'8" shooting guard.
 
I think he could help Bradley for a season. He'd likely be the #2 scorer on the Braves. That being said, I could see why others would feel otherwise.

if the height is a hindrance then yes...but if they can score coaches will take them

If anyone would have an affinity for a 5' 8" guard who can score, it would be Geno. :p
 
Starks is reportedly visiting Illinois - this is where he'd like to land

ESPN hints he's also checking out to see Bradley

but does he want to come where he'd potentially have to play behind Anthony Fields who's been waiting a year & a half to play PG?

This article also says this
"Starks would be eligible next season if the NCAA permits him a waiver due to his grandmother's health.
The NCAA does require the school to be within 100 miles of the immediate family member's home."

wouldn't that instantly rule out BOTH Illinois & Bradley if he's using that claim to transfer back to the midwest from Oregon?

many other such transfers have not fulfilled this requirement -

When NCAA gave a waiver to Iowa's Tyler Smith to transfer to Tennessee. that was not the case, since Knoxville was still 248 miles from his ailing father

For him to get the waiver the school has to be within 100 miles of the family members home address. Correct me if I am wrong / is either school close enough
