Despite Brendan Mullins recruiting the kid while he was Muller's assistant at ISU, ISU never offered the kid.
So ISU Head Coach Dan Muller, who is desperate to land another 2-guard, and is offering every available kid he can find, chose not to offer this kid? Hmmm.

with the open scholarship from Christian Negron leaving -
they land a transfer from Oakland Braden Norris.
Norris is a 6-0 freshman guard that will sit one year then have 3 to play - he averaged 8.4 ppg and 48.6% from 3-pt

Evansville just landed a late 2019 commitment- Demontay Dixon.

He is a thin 6'9" forward who was a class of 2018 recruit back in 2017 out of Franklin, Tennessee. He was a Bradley recruit- we first posted his name back in April, 2017, though Bradley never offered him-
https://www.bradleyfans.com/forum/s...beyond-recruiting-targets?p=450134#post450134

Then in August, 2017, he verbally committed to Illinois State, and signed a NLI in November, 2017-

But then ISU coach Dan Muller apparently needed an open scholarship, so ISU released him from his NLI in April, 2018. Because it was late in the recruiting cycle and he was left without a scholarship, he went to Walters State Community College, a junior college in Tennessee, for 2018-19. In his freshman season there, he averaged 10.0 ppg and 5.5 rpg.-

Because he was a qualifier out of high school, he decided to accept a scholarship offer from Evansville, and he will have 3 years of eligibility at UE.

I think Dixon thought he was way too good to go midmajor so he reneged on his commitment to ISU and thought he would go much higher...

10 ppg in juco is not exactly impressive - every juco in the USA had 3 or 4 10 ppg scorers

and I can't imagine Muller found himself short on scholarships - he's been unable to land anyone recently and has been giving away extra and unusued scholarships to walk ons (Hein, Gassman, Chastain...)

2019 Valley Recruits

...Drake ... Just got a walk-on commitment from Luke Vaske, a point guard from Norwalk, IA...

Drake - Luke Vaske- walk-on, redshirting this year
Vaske hardly had time for his cup of coffee to get cold...now he's leaving and transferring from Drake before ever playing a minute

former Bradley (& other MVC schools) recruit Mohamed Thiam is leaving & transferring from New Mexico State

with these extra players leaving - we could see the spring signing period COME & GO with Dan Muller still sitting on 4 or 5 open scholarships
and virtually NOBODY left on the market - forcing him to really scrape the bottom of the barrel and seek out those players with serious issues that have burned him before...

looks like it's gonna happen....
the spring signing period ends Wednesday then there's a one-week DEAD PERIOD (May 16-24) where...
"No in-person recruiting contacts or evaluations, and official and unofficial visits by recruits to the college’s campus are not permitted."
so coaches can't recruit and can't sign anyone...

Of course, even after the official NLI signing period ends, players can still commit to schools. They just cannot sign a NLI.
I have to believe Muller will get someone to take a couple of his open scholarships or coax one or two of the multitude of mediocre transfers left out there to come to ISU.

This may seem like a joke, but it is real.....I just heard there are rumors that former walk-on Isaac Gassman, who announced he is leaving ISU, is now thinking of returning to take a scholarship.

I wonder if they are hoping any of the players who entered their names into the draft and might not go too high, such as Jaylen Fisher, would be wanting to come there. Without looking it up I can’t remember the final pullout date, but I know they moved it later. Plus, there might be someone at Michigan or some other school with a late coaching change who will shake free. We’ve seen that, just because you don’t build a program through 4 year recruits, doesn’t mean you won’t be competitive. Mueller plays very short benches, sort of a super discount-Rockets, so if their current transfer players that are eligible for next year are good enough they might not miss a beat. I’m skeptical, but it’s still too early to say Mueller has them in a hole they can’t climb out of.

there probably aren't but a couple schools in all of Division I that are sitting on more than one or two open scholarships...

but ISU is sitting on FOUR (and that's after giving one to a walk-on otherwise it would be 5) with very few recruits available this late....
...this is actually quite unusual - they have to be the only DI school with that many open scholarships at this point.

Muller keeps trying...now they are hosting a visit from Preston Urbanic, a 2019 6-3 (or 6-2 or even listed as 6-0 some places) shooting guard from First Baptist Academy in Naples, FL
First Baptist Academy is a Class 3A school - enrollment 192 (roughly the size of Kewanee, Oblong, Pawnee or Peoria Hts.), Florida has 7 classes (1A thru 7A)

He is described as a "lethal shooter", a lefty with a 4.0 GPA
The only other offer listed for him is Oral Roberts.
https://twitter.com/GregUrbancic/sta...19790603988999
https://twitter.com/Aholmes20/status...21241524826113

I gotta think he sees potential playing time at ISU while Oral Roberts will have 6 seniors and has already signed another incoming shooting guard- PLUS they also just took in a solid grad transfer SG - so ISU should have the advantage.

Meanwhile, there's almost no discussion on the ISU board about this Preston Urbancic, only the statement "Who?" - LINK
..they're also wondering if possibly Muller can go after AJ Youngman or coax walk-on Isaac Gassman to come back and be on scholarship- LINK

He looks like a good shooter from his highlight videos, and he has a quick release. He looks a little like Isaac Gassman. Surprising that this late in the recruiting cycle he only has the ORU offer. When a kid has a hint of potential D1 ability, he usually has either signed with someone, or has multiple offers, considering there are 13 Division I schools in Florida (only 6 states have more). I suspect it is mostly related to the fact he is thin and not very athletic looking. But if he is as good a shooter as reports suggest, every team can use shooters.

If he is a great shooter then obviously every team can use that but college ball is so much more - just that recent interview with Bradley commit Sean Houpt will tell you that - in which he concedes he will never see the floor unless he gets in the weight room, gets stronger, better conditioned, learns defense, etc....and Urbancic appears to be about 160 lbs dripping wet! (LINK)

..PLUS - ya gotta wonder about the level of competition he has faced.

They got knocked out of the State playoffs by Tallahassee St. John Paul II School (enrollment 140) 55-37 with Urbancic scoring 13.
