2019-2020 Coaching Carousel

Sorry for Billy Wright- one of our own- Western is a tough job

Yes, is is located in a small rural town in a part of the state that a lot of people don't even know exists. There isn't much there. Anyone here who has ever been to Macomb knows what I am talking about. Their basketball facilities are probably not the worst in Division I, but they are close. They have no significant winning history. Other than 2 years under Jim Molinari (2011-12 & 2012-13) the previous winning season was over 20 years ago. WIU is not known for athletic excellence, and it isn't known for it's academics, either. It has to be just about the most difficult D1 school to recruit talented basketball kids to. Whoever they hire is almost doomed to fail.

Btw, Billy Wright's salary was $127,500, one of the lowest salaries for any D1 head coach. They will have a hard time attracting a new coach at that salary.
Wright also had a unique clause in his contract that required him to play 3 "buy games" every other year (2 "buy games" in the alternate years) just to help the athletic department fund his staff's salary. That meant he was essentially guaranteed 3 losses before those seasons even started.

Well researched by Jeff Goodman, as all his stuff is. But, I always wonder about these kinds of comments:
(regarding the DePaul job) : "If a move is made here, Loyola’s Porter Moser is the frontrunner"

Is that based on some kind of inside knowledge, or a reliable rumor? Or is it just his own speculation and not based on anything other than it sounds plausible?

Moser had better offers, but chose to stay at Loyola with a nice raise and an extension through 2026. He has said he is very happy at Loyola, but sometimes money talks. However, I don't see him taking the DePaul job.

There were 3 D1 head coaches fired Monday- Wyoming’s Allen Edwards, Air Force’s Dave Pilipovich and James Madison’s Louis Rowe.

And, Western Michigan just fired their head coach Steve Hawkins today after 17 seasons. .

Western Michigan- Steve Hawkins fired
Grand Canyon- Dan Majerle fired; Marvin Menzies named interim coach
UIC- Steve McClain fired
UAB- Robert Ehsan fired
Iona- Tim Cluess steps down due to health reasons

Yes, I think there is more to the story. Majerle was extremely well liked by fans and media. He took the program from a new D1 startup to four 20-win seasons in a row until this season he was just 13-17-
Record- https://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/schools/grand-canyon/

But there have been rumors all season that he didn't get along with the administration and that they were looking for a reason to fire him.

UIC just fired head coach Steve McClain after 5 seasons.
He always seemed to have better talent than his record showed.

UAB has parted ways with head coach Robert Ehsan. He was head coach for 4 seasons and never had a losing record-
Record- https://www.sports-reference.com/cbb...ma-birmingham/

And Tim Cluess steps down as Iona's head coach after 10 seasons, reportedly due to health reasons. Cluess has been highly successful at Iona. He had 9 straight winning seasons averaging over 22 wins per season and 6 NCAA appearances, until this season he was 12-17.

UNC-Wilmington - fired C.B. McGrath - named Rob Burke interim head coach....

UNC-Wilmington hires Takayo Siddle as their new head coach. He was an assistant under Kevin Keatts, who was a highly successful coach at UNCW from 2014-2017, and moved to North Carolina State as an assistant under Keatts for the past 3 seasons.

Iona has reached and agreement with Rick Pitino to take over as head coach, 24 hours after Tim Cluess stepped down.
I always wonder how can some schools hire a new coach immediately without going through search firms, posting the job publicly, soliciting applications, or interviewing minorities. Isn't that contrary to EEOC guidelines?

Grand Canyon has moved quickly and hired Bryce Drew as their new head coach. Drew was formerly the head coach at Valparaiso (2011-2016), then Vanderbilt (2016-2019). He has not coached since he was fired by Vanderbilt a year ago.

In other coaching news- Scott Padgett was just fired by Samford. In 6 seasons there, he was 84-115, and in 2019-20 he had his worst season (10-23)

Wyoming names Jeff Linder as their new head coach. He has coached Northern Colorado of the Big Sky Conference for the past 4 years. He took over a 10-win team at Northern Colorado in 2016, and in his second season, he won 26 games. He has won 21 and 22 games the last 2 seasons.
This now means the Northern Colorado job is open.

The latest head coach to be fired is Evansville's Walter McCarty. Evansville quickly hired Todd Lickliter as their new head coach-

Iona has reached and agreement with Rick Pitino to take over as head coach, 24 hours after Tim Cluess stepped down.

Rick Pitino's first move after being hired at Iona is to hire 70-year old Tom Abatemarco as an assistant coach.
https://twitter.com/GoodmanHoops/status/1240096210154926082

Abatemarco is a veteran coach who has been around a long time and has coached a lot of places. His most recent coaching stop was as an assistant at Florida Gulf Coast (2015-2018 )-

He does have a history of some NCAA violations for academic fraud and cheating when he was the head coach at Drake from 1988-1990-

Shocker.

Also, this quote from Pitino:
"Looking back on it now, I deserved to be fired by Louisville," Pitino said. "Was I innocent of any wrongdoing? Yes I was, but I was the leader and I deserved to be fired. I need to move on and that's what I probably have learned the most."

Is a non-apology and a big fat joke. GIVE ME A BREAK!

Michigan assistant Saddi Washington has turned down Western Michigan and will be staying at Michigan.
