2016-17 Coaching Carousel

we have the first head coaching change of the new season...
SMU's head coach Larry Brown is stepping down and assistant coach Tim Jankovich will take over.

Reportedly Brown wanted to extend his contract and SMU didn't - so he negotiated a buyout.

interesting point..
UCLA vacated NCAA wins 1989- ineligible players & gobs of impermissible benefits, & letting agents & big money runners have access to his players
Kansas nailed for recruiting violations under Brown - banned from NCAA Tournament
SMU just got nailed for academic fraud under Brown - violations serious enough that he should have been canned & banned yet he got extended!

Surprising that with such a track record of repeated serious violations that ended in sanctions, vacated NCAA wins, post-season bans, suspensions, etc...
that Larry Brown continues to be held in such high regard.
Some programs get penalized just as severe for simply reversing the charges on a phone call to a recruit or an inadvertent overpay for summer job...

Larry Brown had serious NCAA violations at KU, UCLA but still got hired at SMU then it blew up in their faces as he had more serious violations there...

Kelvin Sampson had serious NCAA violations at OU but still got hired at IU then it blew up in their faces as he had more serious violations there...

Bruce Pearl had NCAA recruiting violations at UW-M but still got hired at UT then it blew up in their faces as he had more serious violations there...

Frank Haith had serious NCAA violations at Miami but still got hired at Mizzou then it blew up in their faces as he had more serious violations there...

and on and on it goes....

Unconfirmed, but now there's rumors of USF buying out head coach Orlando Antigua to get the NCAA off their backs on this investigation
If it happens, it'll be an unusual start to the 2016-17 season with two coaching changes even by end of July!!!!

SMU - Larry Brown steps down - Tim Jankovich hired
USF (South Florida - unconfirmed) - Orlando Antigua being bought out in the face of NCAA investigations
- names being mentioned already John Pelphrey, Mike Davis, Anthony Grant

A surprising coaching change- George Washington University just reportedly fired their head coach Mike Lonergan

St. John's interviewed the Green Bay AD yesterday, who has been the Green Bay AD since 2013 & who Brian Wardle helped "put on the map"!
St. John's is expected to name their hire for new AD soon...

Maryland just signed Mark Turgeon to a long extension - all the way thru 2023!!

Not everyone is ecstatic... as this is Turgeon's 6th year there (19th year total in DI) and he's only made the NCAA tourney twice at Maryland and never gone very far either time.

In fact - for a guy who makes almost $3 million per year - he made the NCAA tourney only ONCE when he was in the MVC and just seven times in his 18 years as a DI head coach
Career NCAA record 8-7 and never higher than Sweet 16

Bruce Weber got run out of the Big Ten but had made the NCAA 10 times, has 11 wins and was runner-up

updated to show Tennessee-Martin locks in Anthony Stewart thru 2020

George Washington - Mike Lonergan fired - Maurice Joseph is hired Interim Head Coach
SMU - Larry Brown steps down - Tim Jankovich hired
Tennessee-Martin - Anthony Stewart was acting as Interim Coach - Anthony Stewart hired as permanent Head Coach

Morehead State has suspended Sean Woods with pay, effective immediately. "Resulting from complaints received, the institution has begun an investigation involving the head basketball coach. While we continue through the formal process, we believe it is prudent to suspend the coach until the investigation is finished," said Brian Hutchinson, director of athletics. "Assistant Coach Preston Spradlin will serve as head coach in the interim until the investigation is completed. We have full confidence in Preston and his ability to lead our student-athletes both on and off the court. Since this is an ongoing process, we will be unable to comment further until this comes to a conclusion."
