2014-2015 coaching carousel

I know - the numbers don't look good the last couple years....and that's what drives these decisions - but a lot of people believe Dale Layer is a good coach - and time will tell if he takes his next team to the NCAA Tourney like he has the past two teams he's coached.

In 2011 he was the Conference's Coach of the Year, and in 2013 he went to the NCAA Tournament after winning their conference tourney.
Prior to that Liberty had an NBA caliber player who would have given them plenty more wins from 2009-13 except for the fact the kid was lured to transfer to Duke..and they lost two other top recruits to transfer..
..and this season three of their top players and starters were injured with broken bones and season ending surgeries, including their top scorer..

The Citadel has announced that they will not renew the contract of their head coach Chuck Driesell (son of Lefty Driesell).
The Citadel finished 11-19 overall, and 6-12 in the Southern Conference this season. It was actually his best record out of the 5 seasons he coached at The Citadel.

Record at The Citadel-
Year..........overall......Southern Conference
2010–11.... 10–22....... 6–12 5th
2011–12.... 6–24......... 3–15 6th
2012–13.... 8–22......... 5–13 5th
2013–14.... 7–26......... 2–14 11th
2014–15.... 11–19....... 6–12 T-7th
Total........ 42–113..... 22–66

Here's something interesting...

One writer mentioned that ex-BU assistant Pat Beilein might be a candidate for the open Citadel job.
If you recall, Pat Beilein was hired last fall as an assistant video coordinator for the Utah Jazz under coach Quin Snyder.

However - he no longer works in that position and now appears to be doing some volunteer assistant coaching and scouting with his father, Michigan head coach John Beilein.
Here he is being photoed scouting some high schoolers.

Someone correct me if I am wrong here - but isn't it a strict NCAA violation for anyone who is NOT officially on the Michigan coaching staff to be involved in this kind of scouting and recruiting function? Hmmm...

Former Bradley assistant Howard Moore was just fired by UIC. His record was not good- 49-111 in 5 seasons after taking over for Jimmy Collins. He was 10-24 this year in his 5th season, and he actually did have one overall winning season, going 18-16 in his 3rd year (2012-13), but he never came close to a winning record in the Horizon League, and his RPI was 290 or worse 4 of the 5 seasons (it was 173 in 2012-13).

his assistants were forced out last year and new assistants hired so we kinda knew this was coming unless he had a great season -
....names already being thrown out are
"NU's Armon Gates, DePaul's Billy Garrett, Illini's Paris Parham"..

but the reasons those guys are being touted are the exact same reasons they touted Moore when he was hired and he didn't get it done there...

Another Illinois D1 coach is fired- Former BU assistant Lennox Forrester was let go by SIUE today after 8 seasons.

Former Bradley assistant Howard Moore was just fired by UIC. ....

some names being thrown out - none officially..
Armon Gates, Deon Thomas (already an assistant at UIC), Dave Leitao, Billy Garrett, Tracy Dildy, Paris Parham ...and Jerrance Howard
...wouldn't it horribly ironic if they hired Jerrance and were back and strong and recruiting well in Chicago in a couple years while we still languished at the bottom of the barrel?

A couple places close to firing their coaches like we are...

Georgia Tech - but there is a HURDLE....
the money for buying Brian Gregory out while they are STILL PAYING their former coach Paul Hewitt -

Lots of talk about the possibility of Tom Crean getting fired if he loses early in the Big Ten tourney

ESPN's Seth Davis labels fans who talk about firing their coaches for poor performance...
"irrational"
http://pistolsfiringblog.com/wait-cant-talk-travis-fords-coaching-future/

..but in the context there's also a discussion of whether Oklahoma State's Travis Ford is on the hot seat - and Ole Miss, too

one more - it is rumored that Fordham will fire their coach and try to lure Manhattan's coach Steve Masiello
...one Fordham source also mentions the name of Virginia assistant and ex-BU assistant Ritchie McKay..
but here's where I doubt he'd go to Fordham...
the most they'd ever pay for their head coach might be $200-300K but it's been reported that McKay already makes more than that!

also - Farmington's Ben Wierzba was on staff at SIUE - and he has also been let go along with the entire staff.
Now here's the funny part - back in 2011 there were fans right here who wanted to hire Ben Wierzba as head coach for Bradley - seriousl-
well, he's now available

It is being reported that David Carter, coach at University of Nevada-Reno for 6 years, was fired after Nevada was eliminated from the Mountain West Tournament.

speaking of conference tournaments in Las Vegas??¦..I am in Vegas for a meeting and got a ticket from Greg Graham for the Pac-12 tournament today and watched Washington State lose to California 84-59??¦??¦

I think there 3 tournaments out here??¦Pac-12,MWC, and WAC

That is quite unusual. The Pac-12 is playing their tournament at the MGM Grand Arena, the WAC is playing their tournament at the Orleans Arena, where Bradley has played a couple of tournaments, and the MWC is playing their tournament at the Thomas and Mack Center (home arena on campus of UNLV), where Bradley played UNLV back in Dec. 2004.
That seems like it would be a lot of fun for a college basketball fan!

I believe it was the West Coast Conference (WCC) tournament at Orleans, not the WAC.
Which Gonzaga won last night beating. BYU.

Edit:
Upon further review, the WAC tourney is also at the Orleans aArena. Wow!

You are right. That makes 4 conference tournaments within a couple miles of each other in the same week in Las Vegas.

I actually thought there was 4 but I couldn't think of the other venue??¦..2 at the same venue is something else??¦??¦good way for those conferences to get fans to their games though

I watched this game last night - it was tied or within 2 pts until the final 12 min, then Creighton pulled away and it was obvious they were just playing harder and they wanted it more..
the DePaul kids seemed like maybe they were just so used to losing that it didn't matter to them, while the Creighton kids were ripping the balls away from the Blue Demons, diving at the loose ones, and clearly playing harder - not necessarily more talent - but definitely playing harder..

DePaul is a whole lot like our team - they have the talent and if it comes easy - they look good..
but if they have to work for a decent result - they do not look that good.

Maybe Tommy Hamilton will be available if he wants to transfer?

btw - Jim Molinari's youngest son, David Molinari actually got in the game - missed a 3-pointer at the end.
