2013 BU recruits

Sean O'Brien- 6'6" forward from Mundelein HS. He is a teammate of Northern Iowa recruit Robert Knar, whos father Richard Knar is the Mundelein HS coach. They should be one of the top teams in the state next season.

Roy and Harv Schmidt of Illinois Prep Bulls-Eye consider O'Brien, 6-foot-7 Nathan Taphorn of Pekin and 6-foot-7 Alec Peters of Washington, Illinois, as the three best shooters among all of the wing forwards in the class of 2013.

He sounds like he is a similar player to Washington's Alec Peters.

Here is an article from a few weeks ago. He had 5 scholarship offers at that time. Bradley isn't mentioned.

According to Dave Reynolds' last article from Aug. 9, "Sean O??™Brien, the 6-foot-6 swingman from Mundelein High School, kicks off the BU fall recruiting season Friday when he makes an unofficial visit to the Hilltop."-

So Sean should have been on campus yesterday, and maybe today. Maybe we'll hear some good news. Sean O'Brien has offers from 2 MVC schools- Bradley and SIU, as well as Northern Illinois, Belmont, Elon and Florida Gulf Coast.

Dave Reynolds, in this August 9 column, said he was coming for a visit the weekend of Aug. 11-12.

Recruiting update: Sean O??™Brien, the 6-foot-6 swingman from Mundelein High School, kicks off the BU fall recruiting season Friday when he makes an unofficial visit to the Hilltop.

We also heard unconfirmed reports that there were "recruits" on campus that weekend, and that O'Brien was here. So I think he has visited.

I know but since that report that he was going to visit - there was NO followup report afterwards as Dave Reynolds has so often done - to actually confirm he was here.
I checked all the major databases (ESPN, Rivals, scout.com) to see if any confirm he's visited and none of them even list Sean O'Brien...

I have heard the Braves are now making a hard push for Sean.
I still don't know if he ever visited, but he appears to be a top target now.

I was told tonight Bradley is in the final 3 for Sean O'Brien.
He already visited Bradley and is headed to Santa Clara this weekend and will be in Carbondale the next weekend.
He is not planning any other visits and will decide in October.

Honestly, I can't see why he wouldn't choose Bradley among those final 3. One's a team far from home that just signed a similar player, and the other is a state school in a small backward southern town in a state that's going broke... Easy decision if you ask me.

can someone tell me why it is hard to find much at all on Sean O'Brien - why's he so much under the radar?
The major recruiting services (scout.com, ESPN, nor Rivals) do not even list him or have a single word on him anywhere in their databases. NONE of them do!

Just about the only coverage of the kid is in the Mundelein newspapers - so if he turns out to be a hidden gem (two different reports compare him to "Scottie Pippen") then I can be happy.
Has anyone seen him play or can describe his play? He does not appear to be much of an outside shooter nor a post player with his slim frame....and he stopped playing "point guard" back when he was a freshman.
The word used often is "versatile - but he likely won't play point guard nor low post in college, so if he doesn't shoot well from outside (his scoring average was only 10ppg over his past two varsity seasons) - then what is left to fit the description "versatile"?

"I am a mid-major player right now. If I was a high major school right now, I wouldn't take me. But I think I'll get to the point where I can play with anyone. What are they looking for? They want to see me have the ball in my hands on the perimeter and show them that I can make big plays, that I'm a point guard in a 6-foot-6 body. What impresses the coaches the most is I can consistently shoot from anywhere on the court."

"O'Brien is the most athletic of these three players and has tremendous offensive versatility," Roy Schmidt said. "That is because he handles the ball well and is a great passer both in transition and when set from the top of the key. He has proven he can drill shots from beyond the three-point arc."

He is a point guard in a 6-foot-6 body because, when he was younger and only 6-foot-2, he learned guard skills. His father is 6-foot-6 so he always felt his son would grow. But the youngster never lost the feel for ball-handling and passing like a guard. He grew to 6-foot-4 after his sophomore year, then to 6-foot-6 as a junior.

If he lives up to some of the hype he could be a very good player for BU... And I do think he ends up at BU. ;) :)

O'Brien may be the type of long, versatile player that Geno likes -- http://basketball.dailyherald.com/story/?id=431898

Sean O'Brien Mundelein

It's not just a clich?© to say that O'Brien is a point guard in a big man's body. Before sprouting up to 6-foot-6 in high school, O'Brien spent years and years playing point guard in youth basketball. That is evident even now that he is often found banging in the paint to help fill a need for his team. "Sean has emerged as one of the most versatile players I have ever coached," Mundelein coach Dick Knar said. "He has grown but has kept his (point guard) skills. He will continue to grow and the sky is the limit for his future." Just a junior, O'Brien already has 15 Division I schools interested in him. And for good reason. O'Brien averaged a double-double this season: 15 points and 10.5 rebounds per game. He also allowed his inner point guard to surface in averaging 4.1 assists per game. His best game of the season was a triple-double effort that included 27 points, 15 rebounds and 11 blocks.

He could still end up at Bradley, but I am not so sure he is at the top of our list right now. Some places list O'Brien at 6'6" or even 6'7", but he visited Bradley and is really more like 6'5". Also, he left without committing, so fans can read whatever they want into that.
Since Bradley just got a commitment from Stefan Zecevic, another 6'5" kid very similar to the type of player O'Brien is and maybe a better shooter and passer, I suspect the coaches are now focusing on another strong need for 2013- a big man or two.

By the way, we know Coach Ford is out in Maine checking out Zecevic. He is also checking out some of the other talent on the Lee Academy team.
We know we need big men, maybe he is looking at this kid-
6'9" power forward Mohamed "Baby Shaq" Bah-

Here is more of Mohamed Bah from Mali-

Lee also has a good guard named Kiefer Douse, who visited Arkansas State this past weekend. Mohamed Bah was visiting Drexel this past weekend.

And Lee Academy has other kids with D1 potential- Here is a 2014 guard at Lee named Aaron Calixte-

right now -with at least 3 more open scholarships for 2013 I would be happy to land O'Brien - even tho he seems like a similar player to Zecevic...
but we need BIGGER wing players to create tough matchups...
with the two other open rides for 2013 we need a muscular, defensive minded guard (like - TB, Will F, Kwadzo) and perhaps another big guy since both Will Egolf & JP will be gone after 2013-14,
but would always take a pure shooter/scorer of any size, color, or background if we can land one......

You both make good points t and DC. I've heard that some of Bradley's players were "wowed" by Zecevic during his visit to BU so you're right, we may have already filled that need.

And, you're right on Lee Academy. They have some very good players. I thought Bah was perhaps out of our league but yajusneverno.

........but yajusneverno.

that reminds me - I still have that 45 RPM record but don't have anything to play it on!
