2010 BU Commitment- Andrew Davis

it's boogie time

I just got this email from BU:

PEORIA, Ill. -- The Bradley men's basketball program went big with its second commitment for the 2010-11 recruiting class, today announcing that 6-foot-10 center Andrew Davis has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend Bradley University and play basketball for the Braves next season.

Originally from Edmond, Okla., Davis will graduate next month from Pendleton School at IMG Academies in Bradenton, Fla., a college prepartory school for athletes training at the elite IMG Academies. In his lone season at the IMG Basketball Academy, Davis averaged nine points and eight rebounds.

"We are excited to add a skilled big man like Andrew to our basketball family," said Bradley Basketball head coach Jim Les. "Andrew has been well-schooled in the fundamentals of the game and brings a lot of skills that will translate well to our style of play. But more importantly, he is a tremendous young man who will represent Bradley University in a first-class manner."

Davis joins high-flying Chicago Julian H.S. guard Walter Lemon, Jr. in Bradley's recruiting class for the 2010-11 season. The duo will join a roster of 11 returning players, including the top-scoring trio in the Missouri Valley Conference -- senior guards Andrew Warren (14.4 ppg) and Sam Maniscalco (13.1 ppg), as well as junior forward Taylor Brown (13.5 ppg).

January, 2010: Andrew is a true space eater who has decent skills to go with his size. He reminds me of some of the post players you see at UNI, UW-Milwaukee, Valpo, and others. Andrew is a good player who has a good basketball IQ. He knows what he is...

Andrew Davis originally commmitted to Army, but obviously never signed with them.-

It looks like he needs to go to some of the pizza joints that are listed on here!!! They call him a space eater at 215 lbs? Could be but I find it hard to believe. Great to have him on board, I would still love to put him in the same recruiting class as MO.

This must be the guy that one of our posters ran into yesterday?

First - GOOD. Like the size. Like that we didn't go completely empty as far as size goes. Not sure what he can bring to the table next year, but I hope he can bring something.

Second - Does this mean all the time and money spent on Michael Ocherobia was for nothing? Or is he still in the picture? A trip to the Canary Islands isn't cheap! It's also not something you can just do in a day!

YES!!! Welcome to BU Andrew! Looks like Platt is paying immediate dividends.

Good thing we spent time recruiting coaches ;)

I like the size. But he was committed to a non-scholly institution. The fact that it was Army should at least be an indicator he's strong mentally and has the appropriate work ethic to succeed.

But Army in its current system is closer to Molinari's style (defensive/methodical) than Les'.

But, the good thing is that this indicates Les realizes he may need to experiment and consider new ways of doing things if he hopes to win a Championship.

Good points. I'm not as concerned with the non-scholly part of it. Maybe I should be, but I know there's been some players on Air Force over the years that I would have loved to have. Same with Princeton, Penn, and Cornell last year. Cornell's 7 footer, who had no scholarship offers out of high school, would have been fantastic in the MVC. So I am going to look at it from that perspective, along with squirrel's assessment that committing to a place like West Point would indicate mental toughness, discipline, and work ethic. He's probably very raw, but I think can certainly be coached up to contribute in our league.

Back to the Cornell thing - A lot of people (myself included) were commenting on how their 7 footer had no scholarship offers out of high school, and how St. Mary's 7 footer had little interest out of high school as well. A lot of us were asking questions as to why we didn't go out and pursue guys like that. Well, we just did. I hope people are happy. I am! :D

One note- the Bradley release says he averaged 9 points and 8 rebounds per game, which are not huge numbers.
There is not much information available on the internet about the games IMG Academy played, so we don't how many minutes Andrew Davis played, but he played the same position as a kid named Dwight Powell, who was at IMG Academy this past season, and who was one of the top centers in the country, and who signed with Stanford. So there is a good chance Davis played mostly backup to Powell.

Do you have any indication Platt was involved with this signing?

From the PJStar
"Davis, who will be a freshman this fall at BU with four years of eligibility, gave an oral commitment in February to Army, the former school of new Bradley assistant coach Jim Platt."

I am not saying Platt forced or pressured Davis to come, just that Platt coming to BU from Army then Davis coming to BU after giving a verbal to Army seems to be more then coincidental.

Regardless, I am really excited to have him here!
