2007 Ex-Commitment- DeAaron Williams

Todays PJS aarticle says DW is not enrolled at BU according to the admissions office wed? So is he going to Bu or has he changed his mind again? :?

Here's a laugh-

Wisconsin lost their first Big Ten Conference game last night, and the local headlines in Madison blame the loss on being
"SHORTHANDED".

"The team announced before the game that sophomore forward Greg Stiemsma and freshman forward Marcus Landry didn't make the trip to Columbus. The 6-foot-11 Stiemsma is taking a temporary leave of absence for medical reasons, while the 6-7 Landry was declared ineligible for the game.
A third Badger, redshirt freshman DeAaron Williams, left the team two weeks ago amidst academic problems and is apparently enrolling at Bradley."

Then when they explain being short handed they note the three players who were missing were Landry, Stiemsma, and DeAaron Williams.
None of these guys have ever started, and I doubt if they were present, the outcome would have been different.

I think I have heard that it is possible to enroll up to 2 weeks after the start of classes, as long as the missed work can be made up. Has anyone else heard this?

Although Steisma and Landry don't start, they certainly are important to Wisconsin's lineup.

Both players have played in all 16 of the Badgers' games:
Stiemsma 2.8 PPG, 2.8 RPG, 1.5 BlocksPG, in 11.7 MPG.
Landry 6.4 PPG, 3.1 RPG, 15.4 MPG.

In the OSU loss, they only played 3 reserves (one player for 1 minute), and that amounted to 5 total points--ALL from Joe Krabbenhoft.

The PJS reports this year that as of Thursday afternoon, DeAaron was still not registered at BU and attempts to reach him by phone were unsuccessful.

A premium article on Van Coleman's site says DeAaron is still looking for a school that will accept him.
The article seems to rule Bradley out in the long run.

Now the report out of Madison is that Stiemsma is academically ineligible for the rest of the season.

Some interesting articles coming out of the Madison, WI press.
Of course we have all heard that three different players from the Wisconsin basketball team have had academic issues of late.
DeAaron Williams left the team but was having problems with grades that would have made him ineligible, and also Marcus Landry and Greg Steimsma have been declared academically ineligible and are done for the rest of the year.

Wisconsin has not had any basketball player academically ineligible in 11 years, and now they have three in a 2 week span.

This has apparently led to a series of hearings with the athletic director (Barry Alvarez) meeting with the UW Athletic Board, and issuing several statements to counter the negative press that this has generated.

Apparently there were allegations that the Wisconsin basketball staff had NOT been monitoring the academic progress of its players very well and were caught off guard by the three players doing so poorly.

The highly publicized excuses (one student claimed a bout of depression and one claimed a learning disability) just don't wash, since both of these kids were very good students (academically) in high school.

Only now after this fiasco has Alvarez gotten going with a plan and ..."Alvarez mentioned learning specialists and daily supervision as part of that plan".

But in summary, the explanation given by the AD blames the kids:
"Somewhere along the line, the onus has to fall back on the kids," he said. "There's only so much everyone can do."

But David Harris, the UW associate athletic director for academic services says otherwise,
"I think the students have a responsibility, academic support has a responsibility and coaches have a responsibility. Let's find a way that communication in all those areas improves."

The Madison based "Wisconsin State Journal" however thinks it's pretty negligent on the part of UW academics people to blame the kids:

what is the last word on his eligibility?

He's got some work to do this summer in order to qualify academically for BU. It is doable, but it's going to take a lot of hard work on DW's part.
