Oscar Schmidt/Marcel De Souza

Not sure if people noted that the great Brazilian basketball star Oscar Schmidt passed away this week. He was a fabulous player who in 1987 lead the Brazilian national team to an upset of the US in the gold medal game of Pan Am games in Indy. He scored 46 points that day. The other great player for Brazil in that era was Marcel De Souza who scored 31. Marcel played his freshman year at Bradley before getting called home to Brazil. At least one story was that his parents called and a girl answered in his room and that lead to a return to Brazil-not sure if that is true. Marcel was a freshman and Roger Phegley was a sophmore. If Marcel would have stayed that would have been an incredible team.

My dad taught Marcel and he was a great player. Personally, I think he might have been a better player than Phegley.
