Sports gambling scandal linked to college games and pro games

This is a long article about a sports gambling scandal that involves alleged point shaving by a professional gambler named Shane Hennen. - https://www.si.com/college-basketba...o-point-shaving-in-pro-and-college-basketball

This Sports Illustrated article by Michael Rosenberg and Pat Forde claim it is:
"what appears to be one of the most pervasive point-shaving scandals in North American sports history"

“U.S. Attorney Carolyn Pokorny of the Eastern District of New York vouched for
"substantial evidence” that Hennen was involved in “illicit financial transactions and fraudulent sports wagers totaling millions of dollars,” resulting “in potentially millions of dollars’ worth of illicit profits and money-laundering transactions.”

The U.S. Attorney’s office letter says, “the proof of his guilt is overwhelming,” and includes “witnesses, phone records, financial records and betting records.” The government has not released most of that evidence.
The government says “numerous” Hennen schemes were “fraudulent.”

And it also involves college games-
Sources familiar with elements of the federal and NCAA inquiries tell SIthat authorities are investigating potential links between the same gambling ring and wagering on at least nine college games across last season and this season. Investigators have flagged unusual wagering on games involving at least five college teams—and they are prepared for that number to increase.

Several gamblers have already been arrested and charged, and investigators are continuing to look into who else was involved, including possibly players who were "point shaving"....
Hennen bet heavily on point spreads of college games. One of the games that Hennen cashed in big on was a game between Drake and Murray State last year.

Hennen posted a number of these large bets on his Instagram account....
In February 2024, Hennen recorded a video of himself in a casino sportsbook...
He tilted the camera toward his left hand, which held a $75,000 betting slip for Drake to cover a 9.5-point spread against Murray State.
Drake jumped out to a 22-point first-half lead and won by 23. After the game, Hennen posted the betting slip on Instagram—but this time, he posted the dollar amount and blocked out the game he wagered on.

Curious does not necessarily mean criminal. SI did not obtain any information indicating the aforementioned games were rigged. (If Hennen did rig any of those games, the culprit would presumably be a compromised player or players on the team he bet against.)

Did our society really collectively think that making sports gambling legal was going to be harmless? Why are we continuing to throw the wisdom of our fathers in the gutter and bring back vice after vice and think there will be no ill from it?

Frankly, this does not surprise me at all, and I would not be surprised if numerous such gambling rings and riggings are happening all over the country on a regular basis.

Too much money involved not to be fixed to some degree, and it wouldn't surprise me if 50% of the refs in all sports were being blackmailed or bribed to 'manage' the scores. It's a multi-billion dollar industry built on greed and corruption, but that's just my humble opinion. That being said, I have dabbled with Draft Kings myself, so I'm not passing any character judgment on anyone who does gamble, just the industry that runs it.

I would be looking into the officials also because they can help a lot into deciding these games. Legalizing sports betting was one of the worst mistakes they could have made in this country. This is way too hard to control.

4 players at the University of New Orleans who have been suspended since January 27, are reportedly under federal investigation related to the sports gambling scandal. - https://www.espn.com/mens-college-b...ans-hoop-suspensions-possible-ncaa-violations

Multiple gambling industry sources told ESPN's David Purdum that a betting ring under federal investigation also placed bets on at least two New Orleans men's basketball games this season. The Dec. 28 game at McNeese State and the Jan. 11 game against Southeastern Louisiana attracted bets from the sportsbook accounts associated with the betting ring, according to the sources. The point spread moved significantly against the Privateers in three other games this season.
.... the ring also placed bets on games involving Temple, North Carolina A&T, Eastern Michigan and Mississippi Valley State. The bettors also have ties to two NBA betting cases, including one that led to former Toronto Raptor Jontay Porter being banned from the NBA.

UNO is 4-25, and 2-16 in the Southland Conference, and they have lost all 8 games since the 4 players were suspended.
The 4 suspended players are leading scorer James White (19.2 ppg), Jah Short (9.2 ppg), Dae Dae Hunter (8.2 ppg), and Jahmond Vincent (7.8 ppg). All 4 have been starters for much of the season. The University has not commented further about the suspended players, other than characterizing the reason for the suspensions as "unspecified violations".

Last week, it was reported that Fresno State has dismissed one starting player and suspended 2 other starters related to a gambling investigation. All 3 players were averaging double-digits. - https://www.espn.com/mens-college-b...holds-players-source-confirms-betting-inquiry

Got to wonder just how much deeper this goes.

The NCAA has banned three college basketball players and revoked their eligibility after investigation revealed they had bet on each other's games, and colluded to "underperform" in games to ensure their bets were won-
More former college basketball players involved in widening gambling scandal according to NCAA-

Thirteen men's college basketball players from six schools were involved in gambling schemes, including betting against their own team, game manipulation and sharing information with third parties for gambling purposes, the NCAA announced Thursday.
Players formerly associated with Eastern Michigan, Temple, Arizona State, New Orleans, North Carolina A&T and Mississippi Valley State are under investigation for gambling violations, according to the NCAA, which declined to name the athletes until the infractions process has concluded. None of the players are currently enrolled at the schools where the infractions occurred, according to the NCAA.

The violations include athletes betting on and against their own teams, sharing information with third parties for purposes of betting, knowingly manipulating scoring or game outcomes and/or refusing to participate in the enforcement staff's investigation.

a report from Arizona State says it involves "one former ASU player" who "left the program" over the summer.
Other sources say the player in BJ Freeman, who started 22 games and averaged 13.7 ppg. He was a transfer to ASU from
Milwaukee where he averaged 21 ppg the year before.
He still has eligibility (juco waiver) but after going into the portal over the summer he announced he was transferring to UCF but to date
there has been no official word on that and he is not on their roster.
The three previous players were identified as Mykell Robinson, Steven Vasquez and Jalen Weaver.

edit - At Eastern Michigan, it is cited that 5 players are involved and have left the team over the summer but that doesn't narrow it down much.
They had 10 players leave, including former Bradley Brave Trey Pettigrew.

At New Orleans, they have confirmed four of their 2024-25 players were dismissed from the team during the gambling probe, and have been identified as James White (a 19.2 ppg scorer!), Jah Short (9.2ppg), Dae Dae Hunter (8.2ppg) and Jamond Vincent (7.8ppg)
After suspending then dismissing those players last year New Orleans subsequently lost every remaining game and finished 4-27

The Temple player is Hysier “Fabb” Miller, their leading scorer who went in the portal and landed at Virginia Tech but has since been dismissed there.

NC A&T suspended 3 players Landon Glasper, Ryan Forrest & Jason Murphy but would not confirm if related to the probe.

So of the 16 players cited by NCAA, the identities of 9 are made known, with possibly as many as 5 from EMU and two or more from NC A&T and MVSU yet to be identified.

Here's a little on how they catch these guys based on suspicious betting trends. LINK

The FBI is zeroing in on a sports betting syndicate that includes more than a dozen players. They have identified games in which unusually large bets were placed against several low-level D1 teams last year to lose first half point spreads, an unusual bet that does not often see numerous large bets reoccurring against the same handful of teams.

The schools mentioned that the bets repeatedly were placed against included Mississippi Valley State, North Carolina A&T, Norfolk State, Eastern Michigan, New Orleans.

More arrests in the NBA related to gambling- Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier and Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups arrested-

Some sources are reporting that more arrests are pending as the FBI widens its probe into illegal sports gambling.
FBI director Kash Patel will hold a news conference at 10 a.m. ET today (Thursday, Oct. 23) to announce arrests from the investigations.

amazing...
Rozier has a salary of $25 million per year and Chauncey Billups has career earnings of well over $100 million
...boggles the mind that they would risk it all to gamble and make a few thousand dollars more...

Stephen A. Smith accuses the current administration of prosecuting these cases because of political motives-

First, I am not sure what political gain anyone could get from this. But these cases have resulted from a long-running investigation into illegal sports betting that the FBI began several years ago, under the previous administration. Usually Stephen A. does a little better homework before spouting his opinions.
The FBI began "Operation Nothing but Bet" in 2021, and eventually merged it in 2024 with another investigation named "Operation Zhen Diagram" that connected the crimes to mafia families.

wonder if the myriad of channels and streaming services that cover and broadcast sports and competitions ever thought
through the logic of taking MILLIONS of dollars from the gambling industry to sponsor their shows.
But worse, even in the middle of some games you have the play-by-play guys talking about the current odds of someone
hitting a homer or scoring a TD...almost as if they really love the marriage of sports and the mafia...
For Bradley, Kentucky and other teams' fans, this sounds eerily familiar.

This gambling scandal is widening...
