Once again, high profile game, national TV, final second, refs make phantom call to change outcome

One of the worst foul calls I've ever seen. The timing alone was something you almost never see- at the buzzer and giving Notre Dame free throws virtually assuring them of the win. But it didn't look like it was even a foul. Both players were going for the rebound, and if anything, it looked like the Notre Dame player initiated the contact.
That is a "no call" 99.99% of the time. Even the Notre Dame players just walked off the court thinking it was going to overtime.
 
Are refs not investigated at all? There was a thread recently about “point shaving”, I mean with how some of these games have been called, it wouldn’t surprise me if refs are getting a cut.

The Valley most certainly had to of vetted these refs this year on who they wanted to win. It’s been Drake this, Drake that all season long. Lopsided officiating not only when Bradley played Drake but other teams who had played Drake. (Ex- Belmont vs Drake- semi finals last weekend). The mind boggling calls we got during the championship game. The goal tending call the refs refused to review when we played Drake at home that was a pivotal call at the end.
How about the ref at the Valpo game at home after regulation he bolted towards Wardle and the assistant had to body the ref from getting to Wardle- like what is that? How is that acceptable as an official? It’s not just the valley, it’s happening other places- are the officials just untouchable nowadays?

I find it very frustrating that most officials just swallow their whistles at the end. Now in this case, there was no foul, but like DC said contact at the end never gets called. I wish there was a way to grade officials like the X accounts that grade MLB umpires.
 
Every game promotes sports betting so it would not surprise me that illegal bets are being made by umpires or officials which in turn can change the outcome of any game. Their are numerous colleges being investigated because of players possibly shaving points . There is a lot of money to me made on these wagers.I was always against allowing sports betting, way too hard to control.

I've watched that play many times and DC I don't disagree with the stripes very often but I have sometimes. This time I agree with you 99.99% that would be a no call and it should have been in that case. Very tough way to lose a game.
 
If that kind of light, insignificant contact is called on a rebounding play, then there wouldn't be a rebound in all of this year's NCAA games that doesn't have the same contact and thus is a foul as well.
Did anyone notice any of Cam Manyawu's rebounds Sunday- he initiated 10 times that much contact - even over-the-back on each one of them but no fouls.
 
Multi-billion dollar industry that is less than scrupulous. It would be silly to believe that they wouldn’t bribe, and if turned down, blackmail and threaten family members of referees. Too much money involved to leave it all to chance and if I had no scruples and only cared about money, that’s how I’d do it. Not to say all outcomes are pre-determined, but certainly a high level of control is there and most likely a large percentage of officials are controlled.
And if I’m wrong and the officials are all on the up and up, they sure do suck.

For those here who do not know, Wily Coyote was an official for many years, and his viewpoint is sometimes a bit different than most of us fans. But he's usually right. I appreciate your opinion about that call in the Pitt-Notre Dame game. :)

Yes, I said that to several people, the refs were letting him shove our guys.

He was a great referee that you could count on to call a fair game. It just seems like some of these officials now are just not consistent in their calls.I have been saying this for awhile that it is hard to tell what a real foul is anymore because so many touch fouls are called and guys getting knocked down and no foul. I do not mind physical games yet some of that has gotten out of hand. Just wish they would go by the rule book.

Agreed. Consistency is dead and guessing when and what foul will be called is nearly impossible these days. Getting to be more like the NBA every day. Not cool.
 
This is just another example of our nation abandoning Christianity and thinking there won't be any consequences. We have been legalizing vices that our forefathers knew were harmful, from drugs to gambling. Did we really think there wouldn't be negative downstream consequences for legalizing gambling, allowing bookies to advertise on national TV constantly (Fan Duel etc), and making a vice something "cool"?

Most people will label people that bring up this issues as "conspiracy theory" nuts, but when you have a multi-billion dollar industry (Sports gambling) now in place, how can it not impact the game? Occam's Razor would strongly imply it has been is will continue to impact the game. One can theorize about the actual impact on the game, but denying any impact is like someone burying their head in the sand. I will not be surprised at all when major corruption findings come out of the NCAA and sports in general over the next decade.

It's not about waning Christianity, it's about embracing late-stage capitalism. I don't know if you've been paying attention to the news lately, but fundie Christian zealots have been doing pretty well lmao.
 
ESPN and other networks & their broadcasters now constantly promote gambling and online wagering sites while simultaneously carrying college & even high school games.

They are indeed dealing with the devil and the only people who gain from this are the networks and the massively wealthy gambling conglomerates who own billions of dollars’ worth of Las Vegas real estate & more.
