Greg McDermott hired for Creighton job

There is a report that McDermott knew there was a good chance he wouldn't be at Iowa State beyond 1 more year, so he didn't want his son to come there and not be able to play for him.
I suspect he'll ask out of his LOI to UNI and it will be granted, then he'll end up at Creighton after they sort out the scholarship situation there. Creighton currently has more scholarships committed for next year than is allowed.

Now being reported that UNI commit Doug McDermott will be released from his LOI by Ben Jacobson, and will play for his father at Creighton-

One reporter predicts Iowa State will consider re-hiring Larry Eustachy. IMO, that's not likely.

Northern Iowa and Creighton are both better programs than Iowa St.

That may be true right now, but a few years ago, Iowa State was one of the top teams in the Big 12, and a nationally elite program. Even the top teams in the MVC would never be considered at that level. Iowa State by virture of being in the Big 12, and being a major state school, has the potential to be at a much higher level than any MVC will ever be considered. Under the right leadership, Iowa State can return to regular top 25 status.

in viewing their boards -- McD has angered some Iowa State fans by saying publicly one of the main reasons he's leaving is so he can coach his son at Crieghton....
and he's angered some UNI fans by taking their big man recruit...

anyway -- this is a perfect example of why recruits waiting 'til really late in the spring signing period might not be such a bad idea...
because if you wait, all this action of coaches leaving and scholarships opening up, and the intense, heated frenzy of recruiting activity
late in April & May might mean you'll get better offers and move up the desirability list...plus it clarifies your choices since you'd hate to commit and sign
then find the coaching staff departs and you have to be released!
In a premium article today...that's exactly what (one-time BU recuit) Chasson Randle said.......

"Chasson Randle, the 6-foot-1 senior-to-be guard from Rock Island, Ill....has been carrying a slew of high-profile offers for years now..
But the end must come at some point, whether it be this fall during the NCAA's early signing period, maybe even April during the late period. (in 2011)
"I'd have a little more time if I waited 'til April," said Randle, at this weekend's Nike Spring Showdown in Merrillville, "but I'm just trying to shake things out a little bit and we'll see what happens."

.. a couple schools I have higher interest in in my mind."..... Illinois and Purdue.
Coaching changes could conceivably change the complexion of things around the Illini and Boilermakers, as Iowa State, long considered a viable contender,
lost its coach Greg McDermott, to Creighton.
Meanwhile, the new staff at near-by Iowa is trying to make up ground...."

Greg McDermott - who likely had MORE player defections that just about any D-I head coach in the past 5 seasons...
lays the blame just about everywhere else...although another possible explanation is also offered...

"McDermott ???deviated from who he is,??? ISU Athletic Director Jamie Pollard.."

McDermott ..."set a double-standard"...Team chemistry suffered, Pollard said."

I find this morning's article in the Omaha World-Herald a bit funny...the writer tries to be 100% positive, almost like's he's Greg McDermott's PR man!!

it's a cushy piece trying to make new basketball head coach Greg McDermott seem like a great guy, but it actually comes off to me as having a bit of the opposite...

it starts by telling a story of how McDermott actually cheated in a golf game then proceeds to suggest it's because he's so darned competetive and hates to lose & this is how he'll win basketball games and recruiting battles...
http://www.omaha.com/article/201005...-any-environment-jays-new-coach-right-at-home

I have no problem with it... it's just a reporter's effort write a fluff piece...

yet another one of the Iowa State players he recruited is gone..
http://blogs.desmoinesregister.com/...d-seeking-treatment-and-then-there-were-five/

Mac is leaving behind a complete mess in Ames........can you imagine how bad they'd have been had he stayed?
If he finished at the bottom with two NBA Draft caliber players, then where would he have been with nobody?
............Creighton people might want to be wary.....

I think you're jumping the gun here. McDermott was a TOP MVC coach 3 years ago, besting JL, so why would CU fans be that worried?

worried about the reasons so many players have left...I am not talking at all about ability to coach.......

I don't believe he had that many players (if any) leave at UNI. I think he simply changed his recruiting philosophy at ISU by recruiting BCS-caliber players who had character issues. That's the reason they ended up at ISU instead of KU, KSU, Texas, etc. There is no way he was going to get "quality" BCS-types to play at ISU.

I would compare this to the problems that Les had with his heralded recruiting class of Fears, Williams, etc.

I disagree...he had a lot....hardly any different than the massive player defections at Iowa State.....
..Dylan Grimsley, Jermaine Raffington, Vince Polakovic, Everette Pedescleaux, Anthony Davis, Mason Stewart, Stephen Jones, Atila Santos, Carlton Reed, Matt Bennett, Chris Foster, Michael Williams, D Jura, M Miller, Adam Jacobson, Adam Salow, Keyon Tutt, Austin Howard, Jon Montgomery, Drew Lundberg, Bret Barz, and Matt Culliver are the guys I can think of off the top of my head...some were walk ons, but still, that is considerably more than 20 guys over a 5-year tenure at UNI who left early or left before ever playing at UNI.

PLUS -- if you want to count the guys who were there on the 2000-2001 roster who chose not to return or were sent packing
when McDermott took over as head coach for 2001-2002..then there are at least five more........bringing the total to 27 who had eligibility remaining but left in his five years!!

Eddren, Darian, Rashad, DeAaron, Fears, Brown, Granger, Thornton, TCS, Saihou, Rembert, Stemler, Jones... Off the top of my head...

agree....BU has oft had one or two each year - as have almost all D-I schools.......
....but nowhere near 20+ and if you add the ones at Iowa State, then in less than a decade, Mac had close to 50 kids leave before eligibility was up...gotta be an all time record for a D-I head coach.....
BU's numbers are about average for any midmajor....Mac's numbers are off the chart for any school whatsoever.....

Jones? Kevin Jones?
Are you counting him as a player who left the team?
And Thornton was also given a chance to walkon. I suspect if we are counting walkons, we can find a bunch more at Creighton and most schools.

Some people on here thought Ryan Thorton would be much better than the a normal walk-on Danny Adams-esque. They were:

Ryan is a better ball handler and can create shots a bit better, and he go inside occasionally and score and rebound. Trevor Trimpe almost never dribbled the ball and was mostly a spotup shooter.

I think Ryan is a lot like Lance Stemler. And we know Coach Les was attracted to Lance's size and ability to shoot. Unfortunately, Lance never showed his shooting stroke much at Bradley, but had a great year as a soph at SWIC. And hopefully we'll see that again next year at Indiana.

Welcome Ryan, I am very happy you chose Bradley and I believe you will be a good player for the Braves.
In his freshman season, Ryan played an average of only 4.8 minutes per game,
and hit 20 of 66 3-pointers, averaging 2.7ppg.

I will admit I don't know much about Jones, but he left early, correct? I could go through and pick at T's list but it's one guy, who cares? The point I'm making is that all coaches have turnover, especially if they've changed jobs several times.

If you are using that quote to suggest I- "thought Ryan Thorton would be much better than the a normal walk-on", that is not correct. I never said that, and never believed it. That quote from me was to answer someone's question about what kind of player he was like, and how he compared with Trevor Trimpe.
I try to avoid making projections about players, especially walkons.

Regarding Kevin Jones- he was a member of the 2003-2004 team as a freshman, the 2004-2005 team as a sophomore, he skipped the 2005-2006 season, then was on the roster again with the 2006-2007 team. I don't think he left early. He did not play at any other school than Bradley, but I don't really know if he had any eligibility left.
