Sam Maniscalco injury

Da Coach

Sam Maniscalco left the game late after re-injuring his ankle. SM has been nursing a bum ankle after an injury a while ago. He reinjured it a bit after a fadeaway shot from the corner. He limped off the court, and didn't return. But he is OK and will be fine to play on Friday.

He better be for this game! ;)

Get that ankle in that nice warm 70's weather in Vegas and out of this 30's wind chill LOL. I bet Milos is ready to board the plane right now LOL. He's probably camping out at the airport.

SM plays so hard even in practice, diving all over the place, that there's barely been a single day in the past two years when he hasn't been at least nursing an injury or two...
it all rolls off him like water off a duck's back

This is exactly why you do not treat regular season games as, some say, an exhibition, you put it away and have your starters sitting on the bench watching teammates with 10 minutes to play and you do not have players aggravating injuries or getting injured. Play hard all the time put teams away and move on.

But we only have ten players.

Last night, that would have meant playing McCain, DSE, Knezevic, Thompson, and Singh together for the final 10 minutes. I don't see that happening even in an exhibition game!

Then dont treat it like and exhibition. Kick the teams A** from the begining and then you play your walk ons for the last 10 minutes. To have anyone who plays any significant minutes in a game v the team we played last night because we do not put them away early and make the last 10 minutes of the game relevant is no good.

I just dont get the whole well we played combinations, we were experimenting etc. Stop it you play this type of basketball team to end the game early. Stop with the letting off the gas or foot on the throat. Get a flat out killer instinct and end a team like that and with 10 minutes or less to play you do not have Warren, SM, Egolf or anyone remotely starting in the game and they wont get hurt.

I can not even imagine the outrage from Illinois fan if they were letting this team within 9 with 3 to play and McCamey were to have tweaked an ankle. There would be no excuse, yet we have no issues making some sort of excuse or just accepting it or trying to rationalize.

I am not happy at all with SM getting hurt in that game. Completely unacceptable.

Thank you! I agree 100%

This post is by far the most off base I have ever read on this board. Congratulations!

Here's my reasonable question. If he's been nursing a bum ankle, why was he played in this game against Presbyterian? We certainly would have won it without him. Also, do we tape ankles? I would hope so.

That post does not even come close! I understand what Houston is saying and I have not chimed in because I'm not sure what JL was thinking and trying to do. I do believe that JL believed we were in control of the game and that our subs could continue with the spread. I also believe we have not been very good the last year or so in putting teams away. Whatever reason it is we are letting teams stay in the game.

There are some injuries that heal as well if the kid plays as they do by sitting. Bradley has a terrific staff of trainers and doctors, so I am sure they aren't doing anything that jeopardizes Sam's health or future.
Yes, they tape ankles, but taping a basketball player's ankles is much more likely to slow him down, so I don't think the taping is as much as in football or other sports.

I just saw and talked to Sam at the airport. It turns out that the team is flying out this afternoon on Allegiant Airlines, the same flight I am on. I didn't see Dodie, so maybe he didn't make the trip.
But Sam said his ankle is fine today, and he is OK for the games Friday and Saturday. The team practiced this morning, and everyone is OK.

I'm not sure but I completely question why JL is being taken to task once again. Yes he is the coach and yes he drives the ship, but from the seven minute mark on (following PC's getting under double digits) it was the starting 5 on the court. The only change that took place was inserting EM for SM when he tweaked his ankle. Then all that was left was to dribble out the clock.

Nursing an injury or not, SM presented himself as being capable of playing and when the situation called for it, JL played him hoping to steady the ship.

JL can only put these kids into a position to succeed, the players have to execute and during that time all I saw was a complete lack of execution on the starters part (poor shot choices, poor spacing, forced or stupid no look passes & tons of dribbling). JL was frustrated as the rest of us and I'm sure he taking measures and reviewing game film today to make corrections.

My question regarding this team more goes to who is the guy who steps up and puts the team on his shoulders when the wheels are coming off. It's usually a Sr. who realizes this is his last year and last go around who puts his will on the team and drags them with him to a different level. Names like Les (the guard), Hawkins, Parker, Cellus, JJ (as an emotional leader) and even the two headed monster of Ruff/Crouch come to mind. This years team so far is a combination of nice players, but nobody IMO has stepped up to make this team theirs as a leader and I'm watching trying to figure out who that player is going to be. Maybe I've missed something others have seen, but so far maybe TB is moving himself into that postion?

I've had my gripes with some things strategically from time to time, but sometimes I think people just like to gripe about the coach, regardless of who it is or what team it is. I was watching the opener with my old man (BU grad, lifetime fan), and before the tip he starts in with talk about how we haven't won anything with Jim and this and that...for God's sakes it's the first game! I can't be doing this just yet!

I completely agree with this houston! :) :)
