  • Porter Moser was just given a nice pay boost and extension thought to be closer to $1 mil
and he just plunked down (or pledged to plunk down) $2.5 million for the Ricketts' mansion near to Michael Jordan's $15 mil mansion- https://www.chicagotribune.com/class...306-story.html

Mullin was getting $2 mil per year and still has 2 years left so St. John's has to buy that out.... I suspect they're prepared to throw a $2-2.5 mil offer to lure Moser, but Porter doesn't have any recruiting connections out east...so maybe he won't feel like it's the right fit and he knows other good jobs could come along....

    • St. John's fans are not excited about this potential hire. First, they thought they were going to get Rick Pitino. Then they thought St. John's was such a much better job that they would lure Bobby Hurley away from Arizona State. But Hurley turned them down. Then they were confidant they would land Tim Cluess, the successful head coach at Iona. He was born in Queens, the same neighborhood as St. John's U. He played college ball at St. John's under legendary coach Lou Carnesecca. And fans thought there was no way he'd stay at Iona when St. John's was offering more than a million dollars more than he is earning at Iona. But he also balked at their offer. So after all those strikeouts, fans think the SJU AD and administrator lowered their aim a bit to increase their chances of not striking out again.
I think Moser can be successful at SJU, but it will probably take some time. And the fans there are not very patient. There is a lot of talent in New York, but Moser has no recruiting connections there. That was one of Chris Mullin's weaknesses, and it doomed him to failure. It was reported last night that Moser was making calls to find out what assistants might be available who do have NYC recruiting connections. That suggests he may be leaning toward taking the job.

      • Here is more evidence that maybe none of these reports about Moser and St. John's can be relied on. Here is a short article by Big East blogger Adam Zagoria, whose information is usually reliable.
He starts out by reporting the Moser is "wavering" on accepting the St. John's job. But then he goes on to cite a source claiming that Moser was never actually offered the St. John's job! But then he cites a second source that seems to dispute the first source and says Moser apparently was offered the job but will turn it down!
Then he cites other sources that claim the other top candidate Iona coach Tim Cluess was never offered the job either, despite many others who have already reported that he was.

The NY Post reported last night that Moser was offered the job-
        https://nypost.com/2019/04/15/st-johns-coaching-search-porter-moser-lands-surprise-offer/

Adam Zagoria tweeted earlier this morning that Moser wanted to return home to Chicago and "meet with Loyola first before making any decisions".

Of course, that could mean several things- maybe he wants to give Loyola the courtesy of letting them know what he is planning to do, or maybe he wants to use the St. John's offer as a bargaining chip to get more money from Loyola.

        • There is one other subplot being discussed about the reasons for the Hausers transfer. Their best friend, Trevor Anderson, who played with them at Stevens Point High School (and was a one-time Bradley recruit) is now a walk-on at Wisconsin after he initially played a year at Green Bay. Some are speculating that the Hauser brothers want to play with their friend at Wisconsin, and that they style of play fits better with the style Coach Greg Gard plays there. We should soon see if Wisconsin pursues them. They appear to have enough available scholarships.

anyone remember Jones was one of four finalists for the Bradley job in 2002 but left & withdrew his name when a Board Member acted so weirdly during his interview? Since turning down the Bradley job in 2002 he has gone 250-217 at Yale-

James Jones is not the only candidate now that St. John's is considering.
They have also been in contact with Paul Hewitt (former failed head coach at Georgia Tech and George Mason who has been out of coaching since he was fired 4 years ago by GMU) and Mike Anderson (failed coach at UAB, Missouri, and Arkansas. He was just fired by Arkansas).
St. John's talked with all three today.

It sure looks like they are lowering their standards quite a bit.

                        • Mississippi Valley State University has reportedly hired Lindsey Hunter. Hunter is from Mississippi and played his college career at 2 different HBCU schools in Mississippi. He played one season at Alcorn State and 3 seasons for Jackson State. He was a 1st round pick in the 1993 NBA draft by the Detroit Pistons and played 17 seasons in the NBA.

He has a very limited coaching history. He spent part of one season as an assistant coach for the Phoenix Suns in 2012-13, then halfway through that season, the head coach (Alvin gentry) was fired and Hunter was promoted to interim head coach for the last half of the season. He then spent one season as an assistant for the Golden State Warriors (2013-14) before being relieved of his job. He was then out of coaching again for the next 2 seasons, before becoming an assistant coach under Nate Oats at University of Buffalo for one season (2016-17), before being relieved of his job and the end of that season. He has been out of coaching again for the last 2 years.
