Davis probably hurt himself by staying in school this past year. His recruiting stock was quite high after LSU made it to Final 4 of the 2006 NCAA tournament.
For all the same reasons that Patrick O'Bryant saw the better opportunity to go higher in the 2006 draft than in 2007 (the new NCAA 19 year old rule was put into effect and there were no high school players in the 2006 draft), Davis would have done better last year. But he wanted to return because LSU appeared to have a tremendous team this year. But LSU had a bad year, and this year's draft is loaded with quality big men.
Davis might also be a little undersized for a post player in the NBA.

I dont get the chance to watch the Best Damn Sports show much but last night John Salley and Drew Rosenhaus were having an arguement about players leaving early specifically Durant.
Rosenhaus actually thought it was not only a good idea for the one year in college as it sits now but thought a 3 year commitment was a better idea for college basketball.
Salley believed, and I believe he is right, that a player should be able to leave whenever he wants whether that is out of High School or after however amount of years from college.
I just think it is wrong to dictate to a person when they can decide on when or whether or not they can pursue their choosen profession. If a person feels they have the ability to make themselves available to play professionally that should be their call, not dictated by another. The league will let that person know if their abilities equal the standards of the league they want to pursue playing within.
The college game will always be strong, even without the high school player who feels he is ready to test the NBA. And the NBA is fine with the young players in its league. But, bottom line is if someone feels they want to play for money or work for money versus going to college for a specific amount of time they should have that right.
