3 Observations from Arch Madness

Didn't know what to expect being my 1st ever Arch Madness experience.
I would do it again, but there is a cost (literally in the price of the weekend, and figuratively with the height of emotions of being there).

Here are a few things I noticed/experienced from Friday/Sat. in St. Lou:
1) Being with BU fans makes watching the games SO GREAT! By FAR the biggest and best fanbase that you just don't notice on CBS (to such a degree)
Having fellow fans around you when other games are being played is so cool, and probably the part I "enjoyed" most. Some fanbases (Valpo, UIC) appear to have a disdain for Bradley, but likely b/c we have been so good for 7-8 years and they aspire to do the same with a taste of recent success.

2) The entertainment between action is very annoying especially when your team is in the midst of a tense game. I can do without the singalongs, bongo cam, 6 questions, etc.
I was ok with the Q/A that were pre-recorded outside of the main arena. That dude just got on my nerves toward the end of our game - couldn't care less about favorite ice cream flavors when my team is making a comeback with under 4 minutes left! Don't need to be constantly entertained - it's too much.
Actually a big drawback for me that I would consider staying home and watching commercials instead. Didn't expect this.

3) It is TOUGH when your team loses. On my drive to St. Lou I had the mentality that I don't care what happens - would be nice to win the 1st game but I'm just going to enjoy myself. Well, THAT Didn't happen! I was ELATED to have won the 2OT game vs Valpo, but it was not a FUN game to sit through. The nerves were super-high throughout and needed an hour to unwind after.
The 2nd game was almost as tense and after the opening tip, I NEEDED another Bradley win. I didn't come all the way from Chicago to see the Braves fall short of the title game! The near 5-hr drive by myself back home after the BU loss was painful for the 1st hour until stopping for dinner.
It was a feeling I wanted to avoid on Sunday had we made it that far only to lose. In summary, I think since you are immersed in the games in person, you experience the thrill of victory, the agony of defeat, at least 2x more.

One more thing - I really like the city of St. Lou, but there is only so much you can do outside of the games, which is ok. I'll have to hit the aquarium next time - I walked to the Arch, which is always amazing. But most of the city feels deserted as you walk around, especially on an overcast day. With that said, still a great place for the MVC basketball tourney!

Great hangin' with you all this past weekend! Let's DO the LOU next year!
(p.s. I will need a mental-health therapist before and after!)

Shout out to @BUBraves2006 and @Dub for getting to meet you fellas and experience the weekend together. Was cool to run into @Da Coach (and fam) at Union Station too! @Tommy you gotta be there next year, brother!

Hope to meet more of you at the Oct. Spaghetti dinner and during the next BRAVES season!

I agree with almost everything you said LB. The one thing I'd suggest is skip the Aquarium at Union Station (where you "ran into us" :) ) unless you never have a chance to visit a better one. We took our grandkids Saturday, and it was a bit of a let-down. Since it is constructed in an ancient train station, there is limited space and inadequate structure there to build a bigger and higher quality aquarium. Most of the displays were just graphics, video presentations, and a few interactive displays. And, the tanks that housed the small collection of aquatic animals were small and hard to see much because people crowded around the small viewing windows. Nearly all the tanks focused on freshwater species, and the one big salt water tank had only a relatively small number of fish that did include a couple small shark species, and we saw one big grouper. But, there were no ocean mammals such as dolphins, porpoises, whales, seals, walruses, etc. and a limited number of ocean fish species. The kids had fun with the touch-tanks with sting rays and jellyfish, but I have been to several other aquariums around the country and this one does not compare to any others I have visited.

Add: the good thing is that the St. Louis Aquarium is reasonably priced, though you get what you pay for. Adults were $29.75 each and kids $24.95 each.

Some shared and different thoughts I wrote last night - feels appropriate to add in here:

Thanks to everyone who has read my writing throughout the season. I've loved doing it and don't plan on stopping unless something with life prevents me from doing it. It was really cool talking to a few people who I didn't even know read my stuff and got a few compliments. While I'd love doing it if I had no readers other than my dad, I still really appreciate knowing that what I've been doing is appreciated and I try to differentiate it enough from other stuff you read.

DUB and LB are great guys! And while I get the whole thing about the somewhat forced timeout stuff, my daughter got on the jumbotron and won the basketball shuffle game (and a $25 gift card to ballpark village) ... so I can't really knock it too much. That sort of thing she'll probably remember forever.

Ouch! Ok thanks much DC!!!

Thanks man! You are a great guy too!
And yes, that moment you shared above (with 6-yo daughter) was AWESOME! I LOVE that she is SO into BU hoops too!!! Evident that you and her have a super father-daughter connection, which is priceless.
And if I were in your shoes, I wouldn't have said anything about the timeout and intermission entertainment! In all my years of attending sporting events, I can't relate to what you experienced there!

@BUBraves2006 - really enjoyed your write-up on St. Lous! There is also the City Museum, which you HAVE to go to next time if you have time! https://citymuseum.org/tickets-memb...wyr6Q8eSEQaRnYvW1HsFXUlvTOsh5rYMaAjcVEALw_wcB

Gotta say I am SO glad you are ALL IN with this site, BU basketball, and Valley hoops. It's a blessing to have your write-ups and insights that basically give us devoted Braves fans NO OFFSEASON! Let's face it - with this site, we don't have a break from Bradley hoops, and DaCoach and Yoda and others provide a ton of great info. all year round, but now that you've come on board, we have leveled up. I am stoked to talk Bradley basketball year-round with fellow fans!

Cool story about running into Aces players - I have always liked Evansville teams and probably root for them more than any other Valley team aside from our Braves...then SIU b/c my wife is an alum and liked those gritty and dominant teams in the Floorburn U days in the early to mid 2000s with Tatum, Brooks, Young, Owen, Dearborn, Kent Williams

It's funny that we both also began as DePaul BlueD fans and have a connection to those teams in the late 80s and early 90s!
But hey - there ain't NO GOIN BACK! We are Braves Fans 4 Life!!! ;)

Especially if you have kids the zoo is both free and outstanding. It is a short drive/Uber ride though.
Yes, I wish the weather Saturday was a bit warmer and that we had the time to do the zoo. I've never been there, but I've heard it is great.

And we have also visited the City Museum and plan to go back again. It is a fantastic experience for kids, but I was very entertained, as well.
And as BUBraves2006 wrote about, the Science Center and the Arch are must-do's as well at one point in your life of visits to St. Louis.

I have been considering attending Arch Madness the past few years because I retired and my niece attends Bradley like I did back in the early 80's! However, since 2022, I was never confident that Bradley would win the tourney! I felt Drake was superior for 3 years, and my gut feeling was even as a 2 seed, we wouldn't pull it out! Of course then, I've misses those great tough wins against Valparaiso the last 2 years in the tourney, but it wasn't enough to motivate me. First off, the prices are far greater then most regular season games! If I'm going to pay, I want Bradley the favorite for my extra effort of driving to St.Louis! I've spent only 15$ to see Bradley beat Valparaiso 2 years ago when Duke Deen went on a 3 point burst!!!! The Alum rate was only 15$ to see them beat Illinois State this year and they were great seats! I also attended that great 2 overtime game in Chicago at UIC for only 23$. Regular season games are much more affordable and while meaningful, they don't determine who wins Arch Madness! I know maybe I'm being picky, but to schlep to St.Louis, I want to feel like Bradley will Win the Whole Tournament! Otherwise, Chicago and Valparaiso are in my backyard and those games are easier to attend! Peoria is also closer then St.Louis and home games will always outway other longer distant choices!

I feel ya Steve - and I was reluctant to go for 18 years since I moved to the Chicago area, though I was itching to go EVERY year!
The 4.5 hr drive to StL HAS to be worth it for sure.
Would I do this again?? For sure.
Every season? Definitely NO (unless I earn a lot more $$ and/or lived within 3 hrs of St. Lou)

After this tourney, it's even more difficult with the 6-seed winning and there are NO guarantees for the favorite to win even in the 1st game they play! I think you have to there with a mentality that you're going to just enjoy the weekend and a lot of Valley games. I might "enjoy" it more if BU were not even in the tourney. I love this conference and enjoyed watching UNI-ISU on Friday after the BU thriller.

The next time I go - possibly next season if BU finished Top 5 - I plan to watch every game on Friday and on Sat. to make the most of the trip.
It's not a cheap weekend! If you're tight on $$, don't go alone - splitting travel, hotel cost with someone else is a great thing! Plus, the long drive home is very LONELY after a BU loss. Thankfully I had a couple great music playlists to ease the pain.

I totally get it. If you’re just going to support Bradley during their games, it’s a big big investment. For me, I want to be there in case they do something special and unexpected… that’s one thing.

However, outside of our games… if you are a basketball junkie who could sit and watch multiple games without ever really getting bored (as I am)… this tournament offers unparalleled access to outstanding seats where you can sit and take it all in UP CLOSE. Some of the most fun I have is walking down and sitting right behind the scorers table at a game I don’t really care about… then I can relax and take in all the banter of the players, coaches, officials, etc…stress free… all day.

That’s what draws me back each year.

DUB - I can't thank you enough for "showing me the ropes" at my 1st Arch Madness, including what you mentioned about finding awesome seats close to the court and mingling with other Valley fans, reaching out to meet me at the team hotel for the team send-off. Then a memorable walk for a few min. with JA'Quan's family from the hotel to the arena. Still not sure how they got ahead of us with how slowly they all walked! Tortoise and Hare stuff right there! ;)

Gotta say I wouldn't have enjoyed the weekend half as much had you not been there! Definitely a big reason I will return! I think we had a blast - just wish it lasted longer!
