There is no official announcement from Bradley yet, but Willie Scott is listed on the Coaches page as the new Assistant Coach, and rumors that this was true appear to have been leaking out for the last 24 hours. I have heard some great things about Willie's dedication and work ethic, and he is as well connected to all the Chicago high school and AAU coaches as anyone we could have gotten. This will turn out to be a great hire for Bradley!
Here are some things you may not know about new Bradley assistant coach Willie Scott. Willie played for King High School in Chicago, where he was an outstanding point guard. He graduated in 1978. His coach there was Tom Bush. He teamed with Teddy Grubbs, Michael Bland and Tyrone Adams. His 1978 team lost to Westinghouse, with Eddie Johnson and Mark Aguirre in the semifinals of the Public League playoff. He then played 2 seasons at a small college in Michigan Hillsdale Colllege, then transferred to Bradley when Dick Versace needed a quick point guard. As a junior, he teamed with Mitchell Anderson, Donald Reese, David Thirdkill, Eddie Matthews, and Barney Mines to lead Bradley to the 1982 NIT Championship. This article has a little of his background- http://blogs.suntimes.com/lockerroom/2008/08/new_era_at_malcolm_x.html
He then played professionally in Argentina, Italy, and Spain for 14 years. He returned to his hometown of Chicago, and eventually launched a custom clothing business for famous people and NBA players in Chicago in 1998. 3 years ago, he moved to Jackson, Miss., to care for his ailing mother, then joined the coaching staff at Jackson State, and decided he wanted to become a head coach. The last 2 years he has been the head coach at Malcolm X Junior College in Chicago, where he took a horrible program to 2 straight winning seasons. He was inducted into Bradley's Hall of Fame in 1998, along with the rest of the 1981-82 team, and he was inducted into the Chicago Public League Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2003. http://www.bradleybraves.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=3400&ATCLID=3666568
Here is Willie's MySpace page, but it hasn't been updated for several years, since Willie left the clothing business and entered coaching.- http://www.myspace.com/wsfashion
I think it is in progress. BU was waiting on the signed contract, and the coaches page just got updated and noticed before the official release could get out.
This concludes a tremendous upgrade of our coaching staff. Jim Platt who brings more experience than the rest of our staff combined and knows how to teach D and Wille Scott with strong Chicago connections is exactly what we needed. Our assitants are finally on par with the rest of the Valley. I think these guys will be the best recruits from this off season.
Good luck Willie, hope you are as good of a coach as you were a player, get us some of that great talent out of Chicago that we have been missing out on the last several seasons, Maniscalco and Lemon are 2 players that prove what type of hard nosed players you get from that area, now we need to find us some bigs that are true centers and not projects.
Actually, I heard from Bobby Parker that he is still out of town, and that played a part in the delay of the release from the BU Athletic Dept. The people over there are working overtime to keep up with everything.
This is a good hire and addition. A Jim Les man, someone who Jim knows, will listen to and trusts. Willie is a winner Welcome back Road Runner
This is starting to look really good, friends
All the years I've watched Bradley basketball there's been nothing more exciting than watching Willie get the ball and head up court. I'd like to have a dollar for every time I've yelled "beep beep". Every time we see a roadrunner in Arizona I tell her there goes Willie, "beep beep". Thanks Jim for bringing him back. Once a Brave, always a Brave.
What a great hire Jim. Willie was probably one of most fun Braves to watch with the ball in his hands. Now if he can recruit Chi. that would be a huge plus. Welcome back Willie a great hire. Now lets get MO in here and let the season begin.
I think I like this hire a lot, and the connection with Dick Versace & Coach Les made it happen!!
Here's an older thread we had about Willie when a story appeared in the Bradley Hilltopper about his designing career... http://bradleyfans.com/vb/showpost.php?p=9940&postcount=1
