Where we go from here

Well, we can't fault the effort tonight, though our intensity is not consistent. These are two different things. We can play with good effort, but we need to play smarter, and by smarter I mean no forced shots and value each possession.

What Bradley needs to do from here on out is not impossible. For the players returning next year (and that includes the new recruits coming in), they first need to "bottle" this game (and season) and remember the lousy feeling of losing a game they could have won had they just made 3 three point shots.

Second, they need to learn how to value each possession, and maybe an offseason gives the players the time for this point to sink in, and something the coaches need to emphasis to the players before they begin the offseason. By valueing each possession, that means the players need to understand that they should play EACH and every possession like they are down by one point with 30 seconds left in the game. Not one quarter of the time, and not two-thirds of the time. ALL the time. If they can do that, they will win some games they have no business winning. If they can't, then it's time for more aggressive weightlifting and conditioning during the summer.

Finally, each and every player coming back next year needs to hit the court for one to two hours of nothing but shooting drills at least five or six days per week during the offseason. That includes 3 point and FT shooting in particular, along with some layup drills. If the players put in this kind of honest practice during the summer, even players who are hindered by shooting issues can improve. Even people who have never picked up and shot a basketball in their life would become at least decent shooters just by sheer repetition, the same type of technique that people use to learn new languages. So there's no doubt in my mind that even a small improvement in shooting will probably be good for no fewer than 4 or 5 more wins next year.

I hope the players can put in that kind of work ethic so they can put these bad times behind them.

With the changes we'll see this off-season, the Bradley athletic program will be much improved next year.

Unfortunately I haven't seen anything yet to give me confidence that our basketball team can climb out of the proverbial basement of the Valley next year:oops:...but I predict that our football team will not lose a game:lol:

Some of the changes that are coming will surprise everyone, and will be good for the program.

I like these guys and I am still going to support them 100%...they deserve it and they really are working hard..

I see a couple silver linings and here they are...

-already mentioned - we are working hard and I think the shots will start falling....we can surprise someone in St. Louis

-one silver lining - even though I hate losing - is that the loss to Drake actually pushes Drake a little higher up than ISU would have wanted -
meaning that our game against ISU is ALL THE MORE LIKELY to be able to knock them into a Thursday spot

-BUT...I did see a couple ironies on the front page of today's Sports Section...
..one was a reference to another chat with Geno Ford which reminded me of the last chat where some "caller" asked Geno
...what's Bradley gonna do for those fans in the cheap seats, "the nosebleed section", the ones who demanded the changeover and who claimed to be "responsible" for Geno getting the spot at BU..
the guy apparently thought the bandwagon fans who just as quickly jump off as on and who are only happy when winning were going to be Geno's favorite folks.

-I found that thought absolutely humorous in light of the other irony in KW's column....that those fans are all gone and it's only Geno's first year!
"Last-place team and the proof is in the stands.."
"It has been 20 years since so many empty seats watched the Bradley
Braves play basketball games on their home court. Not just from the student
section, but from all sides and corners of the arena.
..sadly, until the repair job is underway with better recruits, Carver Arena will
continue to have a lot of empty seats."

Perspective on doom and gloom for BU/GF

Took JL till year 4 to get his program going...and the program getting worse and worse results after his debut.

..... MVC ....
Yr 1 8-10 ok, better than 5-13 the year before
Yr 2 7-11 didn't look real good
Yr 3 6-12 didn't look real good either
Yr 4 11-7 didn't look real good until last 1/3 of the year!

Fortunately JL wasn't run out of town after his first 3 seasons of coaching!

JL did it with under the radar recruits like JJ, LW, ZA, and real late bloomer POB...

No reason to believe GF can't do the same, or, faster...

Interestingly enough, last two BU coaches were run out of town.... BU, apparently, is hard on coaches.

Mo was 'run out of town' one season removed from 12-6 record, second place in the MVC, and a NIT bid because of a 5-13 MVC record but with great players/recruits (future NBA caliber) in place.

JL was 'run out of town' five seasons removed from 11-7 record, fourth place in the MVC and his memorable two game NCAA run because of a 4-14 MVC record with a good injury plagued senior returning and a late blooming recruit.
