Wessler: Bradley bested by better team

pretty hard to argue this....:(

No doubt there’s some truth to that. But really, the explanation is simple.

Creighton is just better. Better team. Better program.

Better coach.

There’s no shame in acknowledging the obvious. Look where Creighton has been: Twelve consecutive years of postseason play, seven of those in the NCAA. So it stands to reason the Jays have won more than they’ve lost against other Valley teams.

But 17 of the last 20 against Bradley, which likes to think of itself as Valley blue blood?

That’s not domination. That’s playing in a different league.

Can't wait until the Kool-Aid crew comes in on first shift and gets a look at this...It will be entertaining.

Wessler used the dirty 'M' word (hint: it rhymes with "pediocre") when summing up the state of the BU basketball program...that will ruffle some optimist feathers around here, for sure...

Hard to argue with the majority of what he said, though. The notion that we have anywhere near the basketball program that they have at Creighton is completely laughable.

Typical kick-them-while-they're-down piece. Fine, all the negative nellies will lick this up and call him a hero..
If Bradley wins Saturday, his next column will be kissing BU's butt again.

I thought Kirk's piece showed nothing but facts.

How can you disagree when they routinely beat us?

I know some want the PJStar to only print soft material and praise BU, like Dave and Chuck do, but that isn't reality.

Nobody has disputed anything the column said.

It is simply a typical column that gets written after a loss. It's virtually identical to the "The best is not yet to come" column.
If Bradley wins a couple games, there will be another column like his previous one, praising the team.

If Bradley wins the next couple of games then all it says to us, AGAIN, is that we should've won the game against Creighton. It's horse ****. Where's the consistency? Where's the accountability? This erratic type of play is not the sign of a good solid program. Yeah we may win some games and go on some winning streaks, but it doesn't say much about your program when you can look at the remainder of the schedule and not be surprised ONE BIT if the team either loses the rest of them or wins the rest of them. That is not good. Something is consistently out of whack with this program because it's becoming a defining quality season after season. Always something. Well to be honest the something is getting pretty old. I'm already tired of the hype and then the let down, and then the midseason hope and then the letdown and then the settling feeling for a tournament that is 1 or 2 steps under what you'd like to be in or what you think the talent level should permit you to be in.

We're losing 2 people next year only one significantly contributes and I think he's replaceable by DD for the most part. Next season is the season for results.

Shouldn't you praise the team after a W, if they play well?

Shouldn't you discuss the teams' weaknesses after a L??

Seems pretty standard to me.

KW hits the nail on the head 9 out of 10 times.

Well this is going to be fun. Can't wait to see the comments after people read Wessler's article about the game tonight.

It's a typical KW article after a loss. Nothing you can really dispute, although it is sure to be written in a way that will piss of JL.

"Better team, better program.

Better coach."

Those last two words of Kirk's melodramatic rant just reek of a personal dart thrown right at JL's temple.

Stop at the first two, you make your point fine, continue on and you are twisting into a personal thing.

Like I said, he writes in a way that you really can't dispute what he says, but I can tell that some of the bad losses this season have really brought the vindictive KW out of hiding, and he uses it when he can. He's been dying to write this article since the last bloodbath.

He says in his article everyone saw this loss coming. Then why didn't he publish the article in yesterdays paper?

Big wins are downplayed into "we'll see what happens next", big losses are trumpeted as the coming of the apocalypse. People who blindly defend JL are the opposite. Big wins are season defining, bad losses are unlucky. I try to stay in the middle. Things are never as good or as bad as they seem.

No problem with that article at all...

It's not kick em when they're down- it's fact-

PJStar isn't BU's PR arm- that is the Sports Information department...

To paraphrase someone on here- If you have a problem with articles like that, just ignore and skip over them... lol

I very much agree with this post DC. (IMO) In addition, all a person has to do is to look back at KW's previous articles to realize that KW is a less than mediocre writer.

" B N Chips I agree Jl will probably be p---ed off. But as my mother once told me "sometimes the truth hurts." We all want BU to be a better team, better program and we want JL to be a better coach but reality says KW's article was right on again. It is not a case of which article KW writes( positive or negative) whether we win or lose. Its simply
a matter facts don't lie. Do we have time and people to get to the next level? Yes I think we do but we are no where near Creightons program. Can we be ? I think so but I need to see it to believe it.

Why would Jim be ticked off at the article? Kirk just stated facts. Nothing new there. I generally don't get upset at facts if they are reported correctly.

Bradley bested by better team

Bradley bested by better team

Wessler is 100% correct!

The TRUTH IS THE TRUTH and some people have great difficulty handling this. Their resonse is usually to blame the problem on the messenger and to "Shoot the messenger".

I know without a doubt that KW is a BU fan and very much wants BU to succeed. He is a knowledgable basketball writer, does not have an axe to grind, and is doing his job writing the TRUTH as he sees it.

Again, he is correct---8 years of mediocrity is enough. Open your eyes and stop blaming KW.

The reason you can't dispute it is because it's the truth.

Looking at BU and CU, they do have the better team, program, and coach. The numbers do not lie.

Definitely agreed. And this is coming from someone who generally agreed with most of what he wrote in this column. The problem is this guy is about as inconsistent as anyone I have ever followed in sports media, with maybe the exception of Jay Mariotti!

I did not like the fact though that he implied most of the defensive issues with this team over the last eight years stem from Les. I don't know how much more Les can drill defense into his team.

I think the most telling fact was the quote from AW where he basically said that for "whatever reason" they went away from the tough defense that helped win them the last four games because the shots seemed to come easy over the last two games. Well AW, they came easy the because they played two bad teams, though Bradley played great defense at SIU on top of that.

I like that Les is trying to instill the Coach Mo philosophy that defense wins games. The big difference between Mo and Les is that Mo for the most part did not have great offensive teams. However, the defense was so good under him that we won far more games than we lost, at least after his first two seasons. What's a shame about our team this year is that we are a much better offensive team under Les (sorry Les haters, I disagree with you that we can't shoot the ball!), but the team still does not realize, at least on a consistent basis that great defense is what sets up our offense! And that was brought out by the fact that this team panicked the first 14 minutes last night when our shots would not fall. They gave up too many easy threes and did not play with the same defensive intensity that they did the previous two weeks. Again, intensity is different than effort. The effort was there, but intensity dropped off when they started panicking and taking bad shots.

This obviously has to change with some tough opponents still remaining on our schedule. It appears to be a mental issue with this team, but hopefully we are on the cusp of climbing over this hurdle in time for a strong finish.

Having said all of this, I do believe Creighton may be the better team, especially without P'Allen playing, and I give them all the credit for disrupting our game last night. I do believe however that we can be the better team in most of our remaining games, and all we need to do is start by getting a win at Illinois State this Saturday. They are good, but they are beatable, and I think if we play with a thorough defensive minded focus we should be able to get this win.

Mediocre teams DO LOSE TO MEDIOCRE TEAMS AT HOME you just don't do that, we are an aspiring mediocre program at best. We have a lot of work to do and a long way to go.
