Wake Forest's Dino Gaudio Fired

Someone there must be talking to Stevens. WF job is a great one to have from a very high quality institution. He would be a perfect fit there! Do they have the $$$ for him. Can't imagine who else they have on their radar screen.

Could they also have an eye on Marshall?

Wow. Kind of sudden huh? Didn't he get them to the tournament twice? Were they underachieving somehow with him? Hmm. Weird. I'm not saying he was a great coach or anything, but I am not sure what the expectations are at Wake Forest.

A good friend of mine is in grad school there and said that word around campus is they feel the team underachieved this season (despite WINNNIG a tourney game) and that WF thought they could do better as a coach. Gaudio replaced Skip Prosser after he passed away...and he was never the administration's first choice.

Calling the decision difficult, Wellman said he met with Gaudio Wednesday afternoon.

"The basis of the decision was our late-season and post-season performances," Wellman said. "We have not performed up to the level that we expect this program to perform.".......
Although Gaudio is 61-31 overall in three seasons and has coached the Deacons to the NCAA Tournament the past two years, Athletics Director Ron Wellman is not satisfied with the way the Deacons have closed the past two seasons.
Gaudio's teams were 16-17 in his three seasons in February and March.

Well, I am all about holding people accountable if expectations aren't met. If the administration expected better postseason performances, then someone needs to be held accountable. Accountability is lacking in our society these days.

Few more things then that but that's one. The other is a sense of urgency!

AD Wellman said Dino was a great guy and graduated his kids but that this was strictly a business decision. They were not happy with the late season flops and VERY poor record in the ACC Tourney and NCAA.

Personally, I think this is a crock to get rid of a good man who did SO much for your program when it needed his steadying leadership and guidance after Prosser's death. But, Wake has made it clear with this "statement" what they are all about -- $$$$$$$$$. I know they lost my respect and also lost the respect of many loyal Wake Forest fans.

I was just saying that college basketball is big business and that is how the big time programs treat it. How can you blame Wake for not wanting to continue to pay a guy millions of dollars who isnt meeting expectations? Should the AD be a nice guy and then lose his job when the teams doesnt produce?

While I think this is a very strange decision to make for what seemed like a good basketball coach and recruiter, and an even better man...it is a business decision.

Before we feel too sorry for Dino, I am sure he will be able to walk away from this situation a millionaire.

your comments made me think of this....

maybe college basketball is big business, but I guess women's college basketball must be falling apart at the seams...

you'd think the very best team in the nation, the team that pays their coach $1 million and has won about 80 straight games
and two consecutive National Championships with undefeated seasons, would have a little more support and following, right??
The coach, Geno Auriemma joked about the tiny crowd ..."...if you see any of your friends, tell them we won.''..
and the press compared this to when UConn men won the National Championship and 10,000 people showed up...

"I thought there would be more people here...
Connecticut Gov. M. Jodi Rell...said it didn't matter how many well-wishers showed up..
Maya Moore didn't care about the size of the crowd.
Some fans have said that the novelty of winning has worn off..
There were no bonfires or impromptu parades
..I was kind of surprised ...I think people feel sometimes they don't even have to watch the women's games because they already know what's going to happen, but this was the national championship.''

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/20...n.routine.championship.5th.ld.writethru.0510/

Only 175 fans turned out for their celebration rally...
half of whom were the university staff and the players' families...
...and when they held a viewing party in their 10,000+ arena, only about 600 people showed up!

The story even says...
"Some fans have said that the novelty of winning has worn off..."

Is this amazing or what??? Would any of us simply abandon Bradley basketball just because they won too much??
Just because they racked up 78 wins in a row and 2 National Titles??
The UCLA fans sure didn't when they did the same thing a couple decades ago!!

All I can say is if teams are firing coaches by not advancing in a 65 team tournament, how many firings are going to occur when teams can't advance out of the first round of a 96 team tournament?!

Another reason why a 96 team tournament is not a good idea since some AD's know very well that just making an expanded tournament won't be good enough!

Yup, Royce Waltman was right! They graduate their players and yet now they want to ruin a good thing by winning at all costs! Hopefully if they do hire Brad Stevens (assuming he's looking to move), he would be able to win games without sacrificing academic performance. But if they bring in a Kelvin Sampson type, forget it!

The coach they ultimately do hire will tell a lot about the direction of their program.
