Stephan Gabriel released from team....

Wow! I am so disappointed in hearing about that. What an absolute waste after all the physical gifts and hard work he put in. Best wishes Stephan. this team has officially hit a major patch of adversity... let’s stay tuned to see how they respond.

That's terribly disappointing. Gabriel looked like he had some real potential. But good for Coach for showing that he has no tolerance for nonsense. Hopefully Kingsby will get the message.

Can't say it is a total surprise about Gabriel from his past and all the things I have heard. If something like this was going to happen to someone on the team, I think that many of us would have guessed it would be Gabriel. It is really too bad. He is throwing away a quality education.
Kingsby did have some issues in his past, but I hope this is just an aberration, and that it gets straightened out.

Other reports say Stephan Gabriel was released for "consistent violations of team standards", which means he has been warned and given multiple chances to correct a behavior issue, and has failed.
Kingsby's violation is not described as "consistent", and thus the one game suspension.

We all hoped this kind of stuff was in the past when Geno Ford left. I personally respect Coach Wardle's quick and decisive action, unlike the coddling of such behavioral issues like we see at other schools.

By the way, it is being reported "that neither of the players’ actions involved drug use or illegal activity".

So my previous statement is not intended to suggest we have criminal players like other MVC programs we've discussed.

My first question is if Gabriel has had previous violations why didn’t he get a one game suspension like Kingsby just got? I don’t recall him serving one. Gabriel has loads of ability on the court. Too bad his maturity level doesn’t match his ability. My 2nd question is how this could effect the possibility of Mast not redshirting. Supposedly he’s been practicing though I’m not sure how hard or how much he is. Is that why Eli’s time table has moved up? Unfortunately just more adversity for this team to deal with. Just have to hope that Kingsby has gotten the message if he wants to be a part of this team. Hope the guys can rally together and can weather the storm.

This really sucks to hear but is anyone surprised by this? We all knew what his past was. Hopefully Eli can come back earlier.

This really sucks! Talk about a player with such a huge upside and throwing it all away. Hopefully this team can really pull together like they did today.

Question: Could Mast play a few games at the end of the season and still keep his redshirt?

I really liked the way Gabriel played and the potential he showed but if he was not adhering to team rules I totally support Wardle in dealing with it. I hope he learns from this and goes on to have a successful career and most importantly earns a good education elsewhere. Now we need to work on finding an athletic slasher while we recruit. We now have 2 scholarships to fill. Lots of new faces next year-could be 7 between transfers already on campus, Reink sitting out, already signed recruits plus the two available scholarships now available.

I would really stay away from any thought of Reink playing this year. He has had very limited practice time and is recovering/getting comfortable from a significant injury. I think one of the unfortunate things from last year is we did not redshirt Ari. If the Ari we see today was a redshirt Freshman it would be a godsend.

Yes, the redshirt rule only applies to players who play in less than a total of 30% of the team's scheduled games, and not after the midway point in the schedule.
I believe Game 16 (The Jan. 8 game at Evansville) would be the last game he could play in and still qualify for a medical redshirt.

I guess I didn't know about Gabriel's sketchy past...what had he been involved in?
I thought he was a fairly quiet kid with a strong work ethic (???)
Guess that's not the case.

I liked Gabriel as the rest of you did. But better to send a message to the rest of the team like this from Coach Wardle.
Very much respect that.

I like Kingsby a whole lot and hope this is just a small bump in the road with no more issues. He brings so much energy, enthusiasm, and good b-ball IQ.
He could be a much-needed Senior next year.

I don’t know about Gabriel’s past. What did we know about him before he became a Brave?
