yes, he is not eligible for a redshirt - if he plays at all he cannot take a standard redshirt.
For a "medical redshirt" there has to be a significant documented injury that ends his season. And he'd still have to play fewer than 30% of the games - roughly 9 games or less - to take a medical redshirt. Also, he cannot play at all in the 2nd half of the season to be eligible for the medical redshirt.
