Player Rankings Depend On Where the Player Commits

Just this past week, a rather unknown and unheralded kid named David Williams verbally committed to Tom Crean and Indiana.

The only places you could find the kid rated him rather low.

ESPN had him as a 40 ranking and nowhere near the Top 100 at his postion...
Rivals had him as zero-stars
scout.com had him listed as 2-star

neither scout.com nor Rivals has yet to update their ranking...
(they take their time, as they still don't show DSE as committing yet)

...but certainly they will and Williams will jump.

But-- ESPN instantly changed their rating on the kid and now jump him from a "40" to an "83".
They also moved him from not even listed in their Top 100 all the way up to #49 at his position...
He hasn't played a game since March and zoomed up in the ESPN rankings ...any surprise?

I really love the ESPN ratings for recent Bradley recruits....

2010
40 - Sean Harris
40 - John Wilkins

2009
87 - Jordan Prosser
84 - Jake Eastman
78 - Milos Knezevic
40 - Dyricus Simms-Edwards

2008
75 - Eddren McCain
50 - Taylor Brown
50 - Dodie Dunson
50 - Darian Norris
40 - Chris Roberts

2007
81 - Anthony Thompson
78 - Sam Maniscalco
40 - Rashad Austin
40 - Tyrone Cole-Scott
40 - David Collins
40 - Will Egolf
40 - Theron Wilson

How can we possibly remain competitive with these guys? ;)

Agreed -- unless they happened to find some "notes" somewhere that they forgot to put on the website (yeah right...) it seems ridiculous that he goes from "40" (i.e. not evaluated yet) to "83" without having played.

Unless he was under the radar and they caught a tournament game in the past few weeks (because they knew he was an IU recruit/signee) and then evaluated him... thats shady. Also... why do they give 40 (or 50 sometimes) instead of 0? Anyone.... ?

ESPN might not have evaluated a particular prospect. Once they sign, especially with someone like IU, espn is certainly going to try to find game film, etc. in order to evaluate. Easily explains a jump in rating.

So if Dyricus or Wilkins suddenly jumps from a 40 to XX are we going to think it's strange?

Pretty certain that 40 is the lowest grade on espn's recruiting site. Forty signifies "pending evaluation." Players are also ranked nationally by position by espn. The grade is broken down as follows:

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/recruiting/basketball/mens/news/story?id=2639514

Correct... all at "40" grade really means in the player has not been evaluated. Anything above a 40 (I think) means they have been evaluated and that is the grade they have been given. A 0 star rating from rivals/scout usually means they have not been evaluated either... but they are getting interest from some D1 schools so they are added to their database. I don't think you normally see too many 0-star ratings for players have have actually been evaluated.

Now I am not saying a kids rating wont go up or down depending on the school they go to (because i do believe that happens), but when a kid goes from a 40 to an 83 on ESPN, it normally means they have been evaluted recently...

Don't hold your breath........there are two players on our roster that still haven't been evaluated, two more that apparently have been evaluated and graded at 50, and we just graduated a couple players that played two seasons without getting evaluated at all.

hey-- don't forget...this same recruit, David Williams, actually predicted he'd jump in the rankings when he verballed to IU

also- why does ESPN still have Dyricus still at 40 and Harris & Wilkins still unmentioned??
.... could it be that verballing to Indiana gets action faster than verballing to BU?

by the way....Bradley's Chris Roberts is still rated a "40", Dodie & Darian are only a "50"

Don't forget Wilson was still a "40" when he left Bradley. That's really all we need to know about the reliability of ESPN.

Harris and Wilkins are graded at 40.

I'm also not sure how Brown and Dunson got a "50" after apparently being evaluated.

Commiting to IU probably does get a quicker evaluation than Bradley. ESPN realizes that nationally more people are interested in a kid that commits to IU than a kid that commits to Bradley.

With regards to our 2 players who just graduated and didn't have a ranking, I don't think ESPN goes back and ranks kids in college. This is a recruiting site and it sure would be easy to revise ratings after the fact. They would actually look like geniuses if they did that.

the concept of evaluators giving higher rankings to a kid based purely on choosing a BCS or top level school is so well documented it is by now, self-evident and needs no further proving.
In fact I am surprised JP hasn't droppped to a 1-Star

I'm not disputing that. I was attempting to show how a player could go from a 40 to a ranking even though he isn't currently participating in high school games, AAU events or major shoe company camps at the time.

There are game tapes, coaches evaluations and other scouting reports available.

I would imagine that evaluating Wilkins is much tougher than other prospects. I think that Dyricus could be evaluated by now and certainly would be if he had opted for the Kansas State offer (if it ever existed).

Individual rankings me nothing...who cares. We're the small guy...we get over looked alot. Thats life...its not "fair" but no one said it was going to be.

The BEST way to stick those rankings in someones face IF it bothes you is finish above 5th in your conference and win you conf. tourney once-in-awhile.

Getting to the NCAA's more then once ever 10 years also wouldn't hurt either. Its a TEAM game and individual rankings ESPECIALLY before a guy ever plays a minute of D1 is useless. I'm, personally, more interested in my TEAMS "ranking" at years end.

Player ratings are ..overrated. Who really cares. I've never paid attention to those like some do here. What counts is how they play when they get here...

I just don't get the "40" and "50" ratings... it sounds to me like both basically mean "not evaluated" -- so why the difference? I thought originally maybe if it was juco/freshman... but that's not right either...
