Omari Grier- Commits to Bradley!

Great get by Geno and staff..fills a need and really helps you for 2013....expect BU to get a Juco Center for 2013 and a athletic wing...you think Karrington Ward wouldnt look great in the red and white..can you imagine this lineup for 2013...Juco center, Ward, Pickett, Lemon and grier...then you got the Fields, bell, shayok, prosser, wells, and two other freshman coming in...huge increase from past years..i think Karrington Ward is the key...if we can land him and get a monster big guy we will be in contention..look at this roster compared to this years and tell me we are not making strides...go BU

A lot of assumptions there.... Ward's recruiting if he is as good as advertised, will likely blow up. Given the history of transfers to mid-major schools, if we keep both Fields and OG here for 2013, I will be happy. The JUCO center should be a top priority! So I guess it is wait til the year after next......

Just did a little stat work to get a better perception to the type of player we're getting.

Omari played significant minutes until he basically didn't play much from Jan. 1st on. I'm not sure why his minutes dropped so greatly, as it didn't seem he was suffering from a shooting slump or anything.

You can really only tell anything from his first 13 games of the season.
In that time, his number were as follows:

3-pt. FG: 33/83 (44.5%)
Points: 11.1 ppg
FT's: 15-16
Assist-TO: 3.5:1

Not too shabby if you ask me. A solid shooter who takes care of the ball.

Here is Dave Reynolds' latest update to his article about Omari Grier, with a bit more information, and some quotes from his high school coach-
http://www.pjstar.com/sports/x1364631418/FAU-Omari-Grier-transfer-commits-to-BU

And here are some additional facts and links about Omari Grier, some of which were posted earlier, before he committed-

Grier is a freshman at Florida Atlantic, and he is one of the top three point shooters available among potential transfers.-

Grier is originally from Erial, New Jersey, a suburb of Philadelphia. He transferred to the Episcopal Academy in Newton Square, Pennsylvania, where he averaged 17 ppg as a junior. He then played his senior year at Impact Academy in Las Vegas, Nevada, where he averaged 20 ppg in his only season there.
Then, to get more exposure, he then did one post-graduate season at Maine Central Institute in Pittsfield, Maine, where he averaged a team-high 13.9 points a game, and over 3-pointers a game helping MCI to the New England Prep League title. He then committed to Florida Atlantic University and coach Mike Jarvis in mid April, 2011. Now that he has committed to transfer to Bradley, it means he will be attending his 6th different school in the past 5 years.

FAU stats- Grier shot 38.9% overall, 40.8% from three, and 88.9% from the FT line, and scored 6.3 ppg in 14.2 mpg.

He scored a season high 27 points against Miami-

A couple videos-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o8chXBTsj2Q (Video from Maine Central Institute prep school- Omari Grier is #12 in the white uniform- the kid making all the 3-point shots)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uidgzrqhYK4&feature=relmfu (Video from Episcopal Academy- Grier is #22 in the dark blue, and Jersey Shore Warriors AAU team- Grier is #23 in the white uniform)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=tzFxCnr2VuQ (another video from Maine Central- Omari Grier is #12 in white)

I had a chance to watch those videos of Omari Grier (see the links in the last post) in their entirety. From the videos, it appears Omari handles the ball very well. He played mostly point guard in the Maine Central videos, and although their offense is not real up-tempo, he does quite well at PG. And besides being a very good shooter, he can get up and dunk the ball and shows very good athleticism in the videos.

FAU has an interesting system to attract donors and supporters...and I know they are a football school so this system works better than if they did not have a good, football-level revenue producing sport.

Basically for every $100 you give to the Athletic Department/"Owl Club"
(somewhat the equivalent of our Braves Club)..
you get one point...and you can continue to accumulate points ("Priority Points") which are "redeemable" for priority seating at events (basketball, football games...), as well as post-season events, banquets, etc...

You also accumulate points based on each season ticket purchased per year, and also if you are responsible for referring new donors.
The biggest point rewards, though come for loyalty (5 points for each continuous year in the Owls Club, 10 pts just for being an alumni donor, and additional 10 pts if teaching, faculty, or a previous letter-winner.
Then anyone giving over a certain level gets "President's Club" status and gets more points...

As you move up the point scale you even have the ability to bump someone else out of their season seats and take theirs if you have more points. This seems to work very well, especially for folks and corporations that want great seats for football - creating competition for the best seats - and as we all kinda know - money talks....
...as they state that their donor giving under this program is over $3.6 million per year!

BTW -- a couple questions about the press on Omari...
Dave Reynolds says "He paid his official visit to Bradley two weekends ago." - LINK

But less than a week ago Dave wrote about Omari Greer's official visit - and it hadn't happened yet at the time of that column,
so it certainly wasn't two weekends ago - - http://www.pjstar.com/sports/x1364618967/Florida-Atlantic-guard-paying-visit-to-Bradley

Also - Omari Grier attended Las Vegas Impact Academy in 2009-2010 the exact same school that Bradley's Jalen Crawford attended in 2010-2011,
and it's odd that not one of the current or recent stories on him ever mention that - http://hateradehoops.com/2011/07/28/omari-ray-grier-turns-dream-into-reality/

I think a couple JUCO's out of the 4 open scholarships next year would make perfect sense to balance out the classes a little.

I would like to get just one JUCO for 2013. That way, we can keep each class at 3-4 and not have just 2 freshmen coming in. We'll be a very experienced team in 2013-14 and there's no reason not to bring in 3 true freshmen for that season.

From 2013 and on I hope we just get the best available player regardless of him being a JUCO, transfer or freshman. Player seem to be a lot more mobile so signing them does not guarantee they'll stick around for their eligible years.

I believe at the MVC level....a transfer will almost always be the "best player available", followed by a JUCO player. If a true freshman were indeed the best player available, then they probably aren't coming to Bradley. I just don't think we should load the entire roster full of transfers and JUCOs. Just my opinion.

Welcome to BU OG! Glad to have you aboard.

Let's hope we hear a lot of OMG's (positive of course) when you get your opportunity to get on the floor for BU in 2013-14!

....a transfer will almost always be the "best player available", followed by a JUCO player. ...

A lot of bigger D-I programs are also looking to restock.......Illinois (taking Rayvonte), K-State, and other schools with player losses and new coaches, and of course teams like UK, Iowa State, etc...who lose a whole bunch to guys going pro, or leaving for other reasons.
They all have to restock yet they aren't so much going after the nearly 400 transfer kids - about the only three quality transfers going to big programs are Michigan's Smotrycz & CMU's Ziegler, and UConn's Oriakhi to Missouri.

Here is the list of transfers........
http://www.cbssports.com/collegebas...ear-updated-transfer-list-300plus-and-growing

Of the nearly 400 kids transferring - how many have landed at a mid-major or higher?
turns out very few.
Hard to make the argument that this list has very many quality D1 transfers...
