Now that it is official, I thought it was worth beginning a new thread. Thanks to BU Family for posting the link to the PJ Star article. Here it is again--

Welcome to Bradley, Ryan Thornton!

Ryan spent his freshman season at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He will sit out next season and have 3 years of eligibility left starting in the 2008-2009 season.

Ryan has already gained 20lbs of muscle since his high school days and is at around 200 lbs. Here is his bio page from UW-M--

What kind of stats did he put up his freshman year. I know he got a little PT as I saw him on t.v. a few times...
 
Welcome Ryan, I am very happy you chose Bradley and I believe you will be a good player for the Braves.
In his freshman season, Ryan played an average of only 4.8 minutes per game,
and hit 20 of 66 3-pointers, averaging 2.7ppg.
 
I like this addition to the team. Ryan has good size, 6'7" and is trying to get to 220 lbs, that will alllow him to play a couple of different spots in the rotation. He gets next year to workout and improve his game and learn the system.

Great pickup for a walk-on. By his jr/sr year, he may be scholarship-worthy ala Danny Adams. I envision a Gavin Schaier-type role. 6'7" guys who can shoot 3's can be very, very valuable to a team.

Class A background, same height (6'7"), great perimeter shot, great range, slow of foot, not overly athletic. They're pretty much carbon copies of each other, which is why I think RT will struggle to find minutes for a few years, but could be a nice role player by the time he's a senior. 6'7" guys with he and Gavin's kind of touch are hard to find.

He is a class kid that will make BU nation proud.....he does have an unbelievably quick shot and from looooooooong range....
 
Would a comparison with Trevor Trimpe be accurate?

I kind of remember Ryan in the state tourney....I think he likes shooting the lights out at Carver arena if my old memory serves me correctly :D

Ryan is a better ball handler and can create shots a bit better, and he go inside occasionally and score and rebound. Trevor Trimpe almost never dribbled the ball and was mostly a spotup shooter.

I think Ryan is a lot like Lance Stemler. And we know Coach Les was attracted to Lance's size and ability to shoot. Unfortunately, Lance never showed his shooting stroke much at Bradley, but had a great year as a soph at SWIC. And hopefully we'll see that again next year at Indiana.

Macabre Mob when he shoots from the scorer's table = .331

Lance Stemler in 2004-2005 when he played for BU = .083,
and his overall shooting accuracy in all shots was 3-17, 0.176.

In fact, when Lance was recruited TO IU by Kelvin Sampson, it was as their designated marksman/3-pt shooter.
But Lance's .330 was 6th best on the team, and NEXT TO LAST best among players who even took a 3-pointer.
In the meantime BU gets back to back 22 win seasons and a Sweet 16 run,
so I'd say Jim Les did just fine letting Lance look elsewhere.

Having seen both guys quite a bit, I think Ryan is a much better shooter. Despite Lance's reputation as a shooter, I have yet to see it.
 
Take it for what it's worth

Thornton DID get a D-I scholarship out of high school
Stemler did not get any d-I offers out of high school

You're right, he hasn't shot well in his yar at Bradley and his 1 year at Indiana. But the year he was at Bradley, I heard in practice, he was automatic. Some guys just can't relax with all the adrenaline floing, and shoot their normal shot when they get into a real game. Jeremy Crouch seemed to have some of the same problems his sophomore season. And I recall that Gavin Schaier didn't become a good shooter until his senior season.
I think Lance will have a good year next year.
