I wonder how much last night had to do with the FOY award. POB outplayed Coleman in both meetings. Shows what playing for a winner will do for you I guess.

It's a shame that the league over-looks possibly the next great player in the league because he's on a losing team! He should be FOY!

How was O'Bryant overlooked? He was named to the All-Freshman team. Some coaches/others just thought Coleman was a bit better this season.

Sorry but i don't remember coleman changing the outcome of games single-handed, did you?

I didnt follow every UNI game like I did Bradley. Did you? As a result, I doubt we in BU land can make an informed decision on the affect Coleman had on UNI games.

While not seeing every game i go to yahoo every day and check stats on every valley game and saw at least 6 uni games on tv? Also watched Patrick dominate him both times?

Statistically they were very similar. In that case the nod usually goes to the guy whose team won.

Thats my original point.....FOY should have nothing to do with the teams win/lose record! How dominant was the player, not the team!

The numbers say they were equal. So how do you then break a tie???

I believe at least 8 or possibly 9 of the coaches in the MVC would rather have POB over Coleman if they had the choice between the two.

POY: Darren Brooks -- He will win since SIU will win the league. And he is the biggest reason.

NOY: Lorenzo Gordon --4th in scoring and 7th in rebounding.

FOY: Patrick O'Bryant -- he is tied for 3rd in rebounding, and seems to have impressed enough of the people doing the voting.

COY: Lowery. -- Maybe he did the best job, but he also had a pretty good team to start with.

All MVC 1st team: Jacobson, Funk, Brooks, Sommerville, Gordon.

2nd team: Moss, Stout, Burns, Guidry, Maclin.

All Newcomers- Keita, Coleman, Bennett (he is the next leading scorer among newcomers, and currently 11th in the league), O'Bryant, Gordon.

6th man award -- Maybe the closest choice of any award. No overwhelming favorite. Lamar Owen would have won except he was a starter for most of the year (he started 20 out of 30 games). Shaw started the last 10 games, so he is not eligible, IMO. Candidates are Blake Ahearn (SMS), Lawrence Wright, Kyle Wilson (WSU), Neil Plank (ISU), Chris Bryant (DU), Tony Young (SIU). Ahearn has the highest scoring average by a slim margin, Wright the best rebounding numbers. Ahearn would be a good choice, since SMS finished well, but he is not really a 6th man. He was often the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th man off the bench for SMS. And he played very sparingly in some games (as little as 1 minute). But he was their leading scorer, so I'll vote for him.

Gotta give Otis some props. His post from a few days ago is amazingly close to the actual picks. In fact, I tend to think the couple he got wrong are better picks that the real ones. Keita should be on the All Newcomer team, instead of Kyle Wilson. And I think Stout and Maclin deserve the 2nd team all MVC as much or more than Howard and Tatum.

Clearly who you play for must be a factor. I will post two different stat lines, and you guess which of these two guys made the All-Freshman team.

Player...Gms...starts....FG%...3-pt%...FT%...Pts/gm...reb/gm...asst/gm...stl/gm.......blk/gm
Player A..27...24.........40%......37%...70%...8.4ppg...2.3rpg...2.0apg...1.5stl/gm...0.2blk/gm
Player B..27.....0........40%......39%....76%...7.5ppg...2.1rpg...1.5apg...0.5stl/gm...0.1blk/gm

Pretty close stats, but in almost every category, the guy labelled Player A has better stats, but it was Player B who was on the All Freshman team.

head to head is the usual way

If head to head was a factor then heres the stats;

............PO'B...............Coleman
pts........40..................16
rebs......21..................11
blks.......6....................2
votes.....18..................21

Unfortunately, the 40 voters are made up of radio, TV, and newspaper people. 4 from each city in the conference. Most of them see the players like POB only 2 times a year, when their team plays Bradley. Much of their impression was already formed early in the conference season when Coleman started fast and won 3 of the first 6 NOW awards.

I might also add that Dane Watts made the All Frosh team with 6.9ppg, 3.1rpg, 0.2apg, 0.2bpg, 0.4spg, .347 3-pt shooting, & .438FG shooting,
none of which clearly puts his numbers above the other two I noted above.

I just don't get it .... how is Stetson Hairston even close to an honorable mention. Maybe I'm jaded from the horrible performances he had against BU, but he definitely didn't seem like an all conference player. What about Tyler McKinney???
